It simply is one of the most spoiler-reliant games, it was literally made while devs and players chatted about the features being added so everybody knew all the obscure instakill bullshit that there's no way of knowing unless being told.

write down every observation you make about the game
i was able to ascend in about 2 years of on and off play doing this without spoilers
my note file is about 2500 lines long
sometimes you play for 20 hours and then get killed in a stupid and novel way, and that one bit of extra knowledge is what your take away from the session
the primary enjoyment of the game is discovery and forming a strategy, don't spoil it for yourself until you ascend the first time, you can never go back

item names can get pretty fucking long and sadly this interface doesn't do word wrap so the names get cut off. i found this inventory panel width keeps 99.9% of item names readable while keeping the log and map legible. you can of course modify all of this.

i find it far easier to quickly decode character+color combinations than differentiate between hundreds of 16x16 pixel enemies with minor variations
