Industry fag, performed with a major city orchestra for years before switching careers. The only money in orchestras now is hosting a major soloist or playing pop stuff like movie soundtracks while the movie is playing (Lord of the Rings is a very popular one). With the ever increasing cost of living, winning your potential customers disposable income is becoming harder and harder, and traditionally going out to watch the major symphony in your area was already a fairly expensive outing. With the main boomer audience buying up mansions out in the suburbs, they're less likely to make the trip when before they would just take a cab from their condo. The younger audience isn't as engaged, especially with the extreme lack of music education through elementary and high school after decades of budget cuts. All that being said, vidya music would only help if it's something like the Mario movie music being played along with the movie. Unless it's someone like Austin Wintory guess conducting his originals, you really won't see many options out there for shows of just video game music

Because I am a tasteless retard. I mean that entirely genuinely without a hint of irony. I think I'm just not smart enough to appreciate classical music. Everyone's like, "well listen to the way he did the scale inverted in the tuning fork in flapjaw space" and I'm just like "yeah cool" but deep down I may think that it's probably technically impressive, but it didn't do anything for me because it wasn't a simple melody that I could easily hum, or that kind of thing.

how did music as a Serious Art Form decline so rapidly? there's reasonable evidence to suggest that middle aged dudes ~100 years ago were familiar enough with artistic music to e.g. tell the difference between a soprano and a mezzo-soprano or name their favorite bach cantata or discuss wagner's theories of Gesamtkunstwerk (to an extent) - but now i think even rich, "cultured" types would assume Vivaldi is a type of cheese. how did this happen so rapidly? it's not as if it's a film vs. stageplay situation where one form radically supersedes the other w/r/t convenience; you can obviously still listen to classical on the radio, your mp3 player, spotify etc. it makes me sad, because the little of it that i've heard really is that good, and i wish i could have spent my childhood listening to bach instead of fucking nickelback
Is it not insane that millennials destroyed everything the western world stood for in just a decade?
Random Twitter postAnd it's probably not based on a damn thing, since the guy is blatantly lying:>>744549545>"And apparently all the classicam musicians are really annoyed by thart"Probably a lie. They hate having to play the same piece over and over again. Beethoven, Korzakov, Stravinsky, etc., are what the audience wants to hear, and from the documentaries and stuff like that I’ve seen, the musicians hate rehearsing the same damn thing all the time. Probably when a new piece of music for video games or movies comes along, they feel relieved, because they’ll have something different to rehearse and play.

>>744551238>hip hop is the most irrelevant its been in like 30 yearsI think a large part of this has to do with hip hop being classified too rigidly when a lot of things should actually fall under that umbrella. Majority of popular music still has that tell-tale ghetto vibe.
>>744550805Desu it technically started in the 50s during the rise of novelty songs that came to dominate the airwaves at the time. The 60s and 70s saw a pretty hardcore blowback against it, but then it kind of gradually eroded again through the 80s hitting another nadir from about 1989 - 1991. The early 90s saw another pushback against it but it faded out pretty fast, and by the end of that decade music was basically treated as something completely disposable. Eventually we got Poptimism where critics pushed for the idea that anything popular whatsoever should be treated as being on equal footing as any of the classics inherently, and that's where it really ends. There's something really hysterical to me about the idea that the latest release by Drake should be treated on the same level as the works of Chopin.

>>744551429>Even rap from the late 00s is betterIt really is. Every rapper had a very distinct style and personality, the musicianship was also just better because the guys actually making the beats were incredibly good and listened to music outside of hip hop. Now the samplers are people who strictly listen to hip hop so it's that old conundrum about people just sampling a sample which isn't quite right it's more like their tastes are so strict they are all sampling from an ever dwindling pool of sound.

>>744550805>how did music as a Serious Art Form decline so rapidly?Because it is more accessible. Recorded music did not become sold in significant quantities until the 1890s, it really didn't take off until the turn of the 20th century when record labels popped up and it didn't become significantly popular until the 1920s via mass production of records and phonographs. That's 100 years of recorded music vs 50,000+ years of live music only. Music is just something you press a button and have now, so it's everywhere all the time, which makes it common which means you don't think about it as much. People like music and they listen to it earnestly and they think about it a lot, but there is a very big difference between pressing 'play' for the 20th time in one day every day and setting aside time and money to go listen to someone play, or listening to your friends/family play or playing an instrument yourself. I wouldn't say it's better or worse, only that it is extremely different.

>>744551429>>744551718I fucking despised rap from the late 00s and even I prefer it to what came after. I also think a contributing factor to its decline is just that it's getting old. It passed itself off as the new genre of the youth, but the first major rap single to chart was Rapper's Delight... in 1980. Rap today is literally older than rock was when rap first came out, by almost an entire decade. People's grandparents grew up listening to rap.

>>744552868This is such a stupid thing to say. Most modern music (ALL THE 1900s) has aped, remixed and reimagined as many classical numbers as you can imaging, and don't forget about film scores.
>>744550805Being able to record and playback a song on demand is a relatively recent phenomenon. Throughout most of human history, if you wanted to listen to music, you would need to physically locate someone who could sing or play an instrument. That created a large demand (and supply) of musicians. Then we started getting inventions like the player piano, gramophone players and radio broadcasting, which made listening to music far more accessible. This lead to professional musicians recording music rather than performing it to earn a living, and learning and studying music became much less important for the average person.

Going to the orchestra in person was the only way to hear that in Vivaldi's time and a peasant may never even hear it in their whole lives. Orchestral music is everywhere now because it doesn't have vocals and has many more options for instruments and sound, that's it. I highly doubt you'd (yes, YOU) would be able to pick out a sample from ludovico einaudi and a good vidya track. It's actually so easy to figure out I can't tell if you're peak midwit who thinks a violin is magic or if I'm being trolled
>>744550417It's fucking embarrassing, to be sure, but if attending an orchestra wasn't such a stuffy, snobby affair that's tailored to small and increasingly shrinking audience this wouldn't happenApart from film score stuff, what's the last classical piece that's actually made a lasting impact culturally? Rhapsody in Blue?
>>744555829They're lucky most people take the orchestra as a sign of quality as well. I miss midi orchestral pieces. The FFX battle theme sounds so much worse on real instruments. I feel it has more of a punch to it that real brass instruments can't replicate

>>744551831Listen to highly recommended Symphonies (i.e. all-rounders) and Concertos (soloist showcases). The biggest misconception is that you need to have specialized knowledge to enjoy classical music. You don't. 99% all of classical music was made with a lay audience in mind. Beethoven composed for normies the same way The Beatles composed for normies. The ONLY thing: the length is different compared to the format of modern music. Symphonies are 20-40~ minutes. They're one long piece of music, meant to be performed continuously. Treat it like you're going to the theater to sit down, quiet environment, and focus on the movie. The meme classical music as background noise for studying is a pretty shit way to engage with it. Just pay attention, like watching a movie or playing a singleplayer game.Ideally listen with headphones or even an OK sound system, since the acoustic range is part of an orchestra. Many classical recordings are mixed in a way that assumes you aren't just listening on a shitty phone speaker. You need to be able to hear the quiet and the loud.
>>744556860Yeah dude, Americans learn about Italian composers, guess they're all italian now
I'm a ringer for a choir that sings with our symphonies. I've done most of the major works that feature choirs, the Messiah, Beethoven's 9th, various requiems, and others. FF Distant Worlds got the most applause out of anything and it's not close. Nerds show up to that shit way more frequently than the literally dying of old age demographic of Classical shows up to theirs. I get it, singing One Winged Angel was very fun, but it just doesn't compare at all to me. Do you know how goddamn cool it is to sing in Mahler's 2nd? https://youtu.be/cIkCcJIqUeI?si=zqea5ZS1vAtsy0Ms&t=601 This finale is unmatched, singing with everything you have so triumphantly is not something that anything can ever hope to reach. >>744549545i think you've come to a flawed conclusion from that statement, that vidya music is taking over the world. going to see an orchestra is simply a "dated" activity or form of entertainment that most people are simply not interested in - on a large commercially viable scale. people at home have infinite music online, netflix, huge TVs, social media etc. the audience of nerds who will be excited to go see a vidya performance, or like Disney songs etc, stuff they know, just vastly outnumber those left who want to go see Brahms or Holst or whatever performed. so it's just propping up an otherwise pretty dead commercial avenue. it's a bit like marvel movies taking over cinema, most people are just not that fussed or enthralled by cinema as an art, not enough to leave their homes and big screen TVs, and already have infinite disposable entertainment. the capeshit has a hype of nerd-chic behind it and people are already invested into that ongoing cinematic universe. very few other things currently will pull a crowd (can think of Nolen, Tarintino, A24 and Jordan Peele, not much else) and so cinemas are struggling, probably dead already without that.

It's just that wealth has a lot more mobility now and if anything, it's more tied to actual utility than inheritance or connections used to be. Elites are still the same, their preferences just changed. And fwiw, many of them are very well culturally educated, they just don't enjoy a lot of it personally even if they understand it's significance. It's kinda like how even if you're really into food, it's preparation and presentation, you're still probably not consuming truffles and caviar plated immaculately everyday.

>>744553693>Like did Bethoven have albums? No. He composed music for works for live performances. Usually Symphonies and Concertos, which are 30 minute pieces made up of movements. Movements are the closest equilivsnt to individual songs on an album, but movements are meant to be played continuously as part of a larger work, rarely on their own. Any work they considered significant enough composers usually assigned an "Opus" number for cataloging purposes. Popular works would be released as sheet music for people to play at home. The "album" format is a recent invention after the advent of recording devices. >Is there the equivalent of a song or where you supposed to sit there and listen to him for like 4 hours playing.Pretty much. Mostly live performances, but depends on the era. By the time of Beethoven, the concert format wasn't that much different than how you would see a classical show now: A 2-4 hour show where the orchestra plays a handful of distinct works, sometimes by varying composers. For example. Beethoven premiered his 5th and 6th Symphony at the same concert, alongside a Piano Concerto, an Aria, and other works. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beethoven_concert_of_22_December_1808This really depends on the time period. Many 18th century guys like Haydn often composed for private performances for nobles and aristocratic patrons. Same with a lot of Mozart, literally commissioned new works by the king of Austria-Hungary for the court. Bach in the 17th century was a lot of church music, etc.

>>744549545>why is vidya music taking over the world? It's just simpler, like pop.
>>744558241Personally, I think that's less a problem with the medium, and more a problem with the composer, because you hear it in remixes a lot. Vidya shit hits with a certain intention. You take a boss theme, different components of the song are going to strike very deliberately to keep you into the fight and in the moment. Keep you hype. When they get remixed though, the composer doesn't appreciate that nuance of it. They're just doing the song their way, and they lose a lot of mood because of it. So when the fan hears it, expecting it to have the same hype, it just isn't there. It fucking disappoints, and you wonder what the fuck these assholes were doing, and if they even know the original.
>>744549545There's no novelty in listening to a live orchestra play music from the 17th century. There is still some novelty in hearing a song from a video game being played by an orchestra, so that is more likely to get paying customers through the door. Most normal people don't have any musical literacy, and their appreciation of a song largely boils down to how much they recognise it from pop culture, or whether they buy into the image/brand that the "artist" has created.

Wine is an industry people psyop themselves into thinking is incredibly complex even though blind tests have shown professional wine critics fail to tell the difference between premium and cheap wines. The pretentiousness can be very off putting. Classical music is great, technically impressive and influenced almost everything you listen to. But the fans online are very off putting. Classical (read: not orchestral) is dying because you need to be influenced by someone, usually a parent, to get exposed to it. Double whammy with this because if you want to actually play it you need to start building foundational skills when you're like 5. My mom comes from a musical family so that was her influence, but my dad was influenced by Looney Tunes when they would do cartoons like Rabbit of Seville. But nothing pulls directly from classical now. At best you got the first few notes of something like Clair de Lune in tiktok videos. So how is someone getting their butts in symphony hall seats without that influence? Late millennials and early Zoomers are the ones having kids now, so if they weren't band kids, they aren't going to know it either. It's very unlikely that without any external guidance, someone is just gonna go "What was that Mendelssohn fellow about" and start digging.

>>744558778Eh. It can be good, but see what >>744558669 was talking about. There's no harm in trying something out, but you need to have an ear for what works and what doesn't, what keeps the original flow and spirit of the song, and what's just soulless derivative noise.Touhoushit's a good example. There are really good metal remixes of touhou songs. There are also incredibly shit ones. Ditto electronic. The problem with both is never the quality of the song though, but whether the person doing it "understands" the original well enough, or whether they're just apeing out.

NGL, I listen to a LOT of different genres for different moods and tastes, but I don't like it when my songs go off on walkabout. It really just comes down to a difference in format. Most classical music is longer and meant to be enjoyed as a dedicated performance. They require your attention for 30 minutes+. It's like watching a movie, you sit down to pay attention to it, and it has pacing. It's difficult to sustain super catchy high BPMs song for 39 minutes straight, you need slower portions to accentuate the highs. Even movies like John Wick aren't 100% go go go climatic action scenes all the time.2-4 minute songs are great in our modern lives. 8 minute car ride to the store? Awesome I'll put on the Xenoblade OST or a few Metallica songs. Not a great time to put on Beethoven's 7th Symphony.
It's possible Artfags deserve their rep.

>>744550783Music theory is king of nerd shit and I say that as a band kid. Unironically nobody should start going in depth to someone on anything in that subject until they can actually start to pick up on the differences themselves. Classical music has appreciation simply because it's good. It has bold highs and emotional lows, with phrasing that allows each conductor and musician to add their own highlights on the piece. The same piece can sound completely different in the hands of a different conductor.
>>744559294An individual work needs slower parts. Not that a listening does.Imagine trying to turn Running in the 90s into a 35 minute piece of music. It sure as shit is going to have slower parts. Anything that long needs pacing, even if that range is 170-240BPM for a fast Eurobeat song.

>>744559705I agree on classical music for sure and do understand the complexity behind it. I quite enjoy it myself. I was just pointing out how a lot of it's value (especially online) tends to be from value signaling. You see it on a small scale where a lot of people on here get way to mad about remakes. The wine thing I'm basically completely skeptical on. Multiple studies have failed to demonstrate that even experienced wine tastes can reliably identify the "better" wine. Anecdotally I've done blind tests with friends and cheaper wine would sometimes win, and they'd still identify stiff like tannins, the meniscus texture and color etc or aromas that made them identify it as the better wine.

>>744561495That’s a testament to how bad music’s gotten, not sonic music’s quality
>>744551694Opera is especially funny for this. It's considered sophisticated and pretentious "high art" these days. But most famous Operas were written for mass audiences. The Magic Flute and Puccini's melodramatic Italian opera are not sophisticated pieces of art, they're pretty cheesey.

>>744561320Never said its the only old music. But to a normalfag some 80's or 90's metal is in fact going to be seen as old. Most of these retards listen to the latest shit rapper and his shit music. It's release order and it's enjoyable to hear the evolution of his music. Beethoven is quintessential classical.I really love almost all the romantic and early modern dudes, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Shastokovich etc. All fantastic. Sibelius violin concerto is a particular favorite. Same with this https://youtu.be/kvMQxhFsa88Pick any Symphony, Concerto, or anything else that sounds interesting from these lists. >>744562283Dune and LOTR is also a good example. The foundation series for sci-fi. A lot of horror movies and books in general are currently very underrated currently and I think once they're old enough they'll likely be a lot more appreciated.

>>744560473The early modern composers part of the Western canon now (i.e. widely seen programming in orchestras, part of curriculums) are not that old. Shastokovich saw Jesus Christ Superstar in the 1970s before he died. He apparently enjoyed it so much he saw it twice and said he wished he composed it.The tradition isn't that old. Just most modern composers are academic wanks who make minimalist atonal shit that no audience wants to hear besides other academic autists. The good modern composers like Avro Parte will enter the canon though

>>744563492For me, it's Falling water. It caught me completely off guard.
I just don't really get classical when people talk about it in the context of it being objectively some of the best and most emotional music ever made, like a lot of people in this thread. I've been to the Opera, I've seen live orchestras playing mozart more than once but it just doesn't really stick with me or hit me in the moment and that's not true for most genres.
>>744563565I went there once and it was just fags arguing over which recording of a certain piece is the best one
>>744563572>Toby Fox gets Mario Paint>becomes a worldwide phenomena for over a decadeThat Nintendo's looking pretty good right about now
>>744563646>playing mozart *for example
i'd pay good money to see the cuphead ost performed live so i get it
>>744563679So it's like /v/ then
>>744563679Considering we argue over the best release, re-release, remake or remaster you should understand completely why they do that
>>744563646Emotion is subjective to each person. I just like classical because it has a lot of artistic depth and craftsmanship. It's more objective on that front, in terms of exploring the boundaries of music, developing musical ideas and playing with them in a single work. A lot of the famous romantic pieces are more conventionally ""sweeping" and "emotional". Listen to Sibelius violin concerto for something sweeping and romantic, Brahms German Requiem for somber, and Shastokovich String Quartet 8 for dark vibes.
>>744563821not really because anybody except the few unfortunate can listen to music but not everyone can play videogames, Mechanical skill and reaction is the name of the game here and the metric is fun. Not all media are equal and each has different entrypoints.Iam not gonna pretend I know shit about music but Iam also really open to listening to good things, if it sounds good I'll listen to it simple as.You cant apply the same logic to videogames because the curve is different.
>>744549545I don't even think this is a real problem. At least with vidya music specifically. My local city orchestra does 60% classical performances and 40% pop performances. The pop shows are typically film accompaniments (Harry Potter/LOTR/Star Wars/Godfather/etc), oil music arrangements (Beatles/Elton John, Jazz and Soul stuff), and THEN video game/anime music shows. Vidya is not the majority of the pop stuff, at least with the orchestra programming I've seen. It's like maybe 30% of it at most.
>>744564052The fuck are you talking about? You can apply the same logic to both. A recording of a piece can obviously be superior to another. Just as a certain release of a video game can be superior to another. Nobody cares if money is a barrier to you playing the different versions considering the high seas solve that problem
>>744564052We're not talking about remakes that change gameplay mechanics and difficulty. We're talking about re-releases and ports and autistic differences. That's comparable to /mu/ autists compared different recordings of a Hadyn symphony.
>>744564265*pop music arrangements
>>744563963I do not really care for the idea of objectivity in art and in general I prefer art that is both more contemporary and more "kinetic" so that probably plays a part. I think also I just associate classical instrumentation with bland film scores and the like. I feel like I would probably appreciate a lot of the ideas people profess about classical more with instrumentation that wasn't purely piano and strings, but I don't know. I'm not invested into music theory or whatever I just listen to what I like.
thats their own fault. its a snobby music genre filled with pseudoelites and richfags that treat it as badge of class. vidya music is for everyone. same with high art schools, inhaling their vegan scented farts in unison.
>>744549545Because for the past 20 years it's one of the only genres you can find that has actual musicality instead of niggers babbling about garbage.
>>744564632I understand close to zero theory and still love classical. Explore some more classical works Anon, you'll probably appreciate it more. I like it because I think it sounds good, same reasoning as you.>>744564984Classical is for everyone. All the famous composers made music intended for lay audiences. Ignore the academic and snob retards.
>>744550407Wait, is this vidya orchestra related? I had no idea kek, I downloaded this but haven't watched it yet.
>>744565101Most of the reason I'm thinking about it is because of exposure to people who insist that it's superior to almost everything that came after and I'd like to understand what they see in it but that's probably an unhealthy way to think about music in general tbf
>>744549545Just like those dudes in clickbait>FORMER GUITAR PRO REACTS TO VIDYA MUSICThese niggas learned guitar for pussy and all they get are sweaty nerds
>>744565168I generally agree. It's not superior to what has come after. I do think there is something to be said of the format and tradition of classical music resulting in works that have more artistic depth. The long run times that are focused on developing and playing with themes and musical ideas, a whole stage worth of instruments, rigidity of sheet music, etc. Put another way, there's more going on in a 30 minute Symphony than a 2 minute pop song. The composition of most pop songs that just repeat 4 chords is objectively simpler. It's like comparing the gameplay mechanics of Mario Odyssey to Astro Bot. Both great games, but Astro Bot just has way less going on in terms of the raw movement and platforming mechanics.
Thanks you vee for providing me with a movie to watch tonight. Here's one that I like https://files.catbox.moe/9icwo4.flac
>>744549545This board thinks (((Toby Fox))) makes good music. I wouldn't be listening to anything these retards have to say about songs.
>>744565578Not saying this makes classical music objectively better than modern popular hits. I love rock bands and pop music like ABBA, they're incredibly catchy. I'd put the best ABBA songs up there with the most catchy and memorable symphony recapitulations.Maybe another way to put it is like this: They have similar enjoyment highs. But classical has more complexity in that enjoyment spike, and better lows. The best pop songs are like eating a brownie, pretty simple but still fucking delicious. The best of classical is like eating a fancy chocolate cake with 20 different aroma compounds and flavors going on.
