How immersive is a high end vr headset, compared to a top of the line oled monitor?

flat tits vs 3d tits
>>
>>744550303
Yea thats a point to consider. How good is gooning in vr compared to flat? Is virtamate that much better?
>>
>>744550192
in terms of immersion there's no comparison. the oled can lead to a more pleasant experience but it will never match having 3d objects spacially existing in front of you instead of a flat projection.
>>
>>744550871
>pleasant
Not really. Take vice city for example, it recently got vr support. On flatscreen I can go inside interiors, buildings and its cool to look at but on vr there's atmosphere literal presence. When I was playing last night I went to the strip club and literally sat down and chilled there watching the whores. Its like a hangout place with vibes I even had a smoke. Flatscreen is nothing like this.
>>
>>744550192
Who the fuck has a GPU that will do 3840x3552x2 in today's games?
>>
>>744551385
you seem overly eager to disagree with people.
>>
>>744551652
Vr headsets aren't like monitors you can downscale em and they still look good. But ye idk man.
>>
>>744550192
its all gimmick. think of it like physx. you pay extra for nvidia just to get some gay physics that could have ran just as good on competitor IHV hardware if it wasn't for Nvidia/VR shit software.
>>
unless you have a 9800x3d or 14900k dont bother with VR. they demand high refresh rate at all times and a shitty CPU will bottleneck that.
>>
>>744552152
How gpu dependent are they?
>>
>>744552014
I'm sorry but high end vr is anything but a gimmick. If you have the pc tk support it its unreal.
>>
>>744550192
There is no comparison, VR feels like you're actually inside the space. It's actually pretty blue balling when you play a good looking game that is shallow as fuck because no one has the budget to make good VR games.

Still using mods to play old games in 3D is interesting. My suggestion to you is to get a used quest 2 off of facebook for as cheap as possible just to experience it.

>>744550383
Extremely blue balling, shameful, just don't do it.

>>744552152
VR works fine on my i5 11400. Most platforms have a frame doubler anyways, zuckbook only needs like 45 fps to work.
>>
>>744553156
Bro I play morrowind vr and hang out inside the taverns for like 10 minutes its just so comfy
>>
>>744553510
I put in many hours into new vegas and skyrim re-re-replaying them using VR driver mods.

Fun, but now I want a real immersive survival rpg that is built around motion controls with natural feeling interactions.

I've been trying out the new stalker VR mod, it scratches some of that itch, but it's based off of the terrible anomaly mod which turns stalker into tarkov.
>>
>>744550383
Virtamate is basically an over complicated 3D model viewer with physics.
It does support stuff like mocap animations, but you'll need to search pretty hard for those assets, and the UI and file system are so fucked up, it'll take you days just to add them into your scene.
Also, the 3D base model and the graphics
are both pretty much outdated.
I prefer just adding VR hacks to games made in the current gen game engines, like UE4(PBR, Ray-Tracing), UE5(has RTGI by defaut), RE Engine(recent ones have RT, also shit ton of nude mods),
these games with some nice hand crafted nude mods, would probably give you much better immersion, because the characters talk and move around mostly by it's own,
and you won't have to spend 100 hours on VAM adding reaction scripts and user-made plugins that will eventually conflict with each other and crash the game...
>>
>>744550192
Bitch this is more expensive than an NVIDIA card
>>
>>744553010
depends on the title a 16gb vram gpu or better is always recommended and if you got one then you should have no problem buying a am5 or raptor lake platform.
>>
>>744553972
>but you'll need to search pretty hard for those assets

It's all in the same forum where you get your wegs from what's so hard about it
>>
>>744554036
and you need expensive CPU+DDR5 to match too. Anything less and you get a judder experience full of motion sickness.
>>
>>744550192
When is the nigger loving steam frame coming out.
>>
keep in mind you're talking to lots of people that have smol PC monitors
55 inch TV is quite immersive at a comfortable distance and you can also do headtracking in sim games without using VR
the image quality on TV/monitor at 4K is so much better. I got a bigscreen beyond 2 and returned it because it stopped working, anyway it had so much glare, like half the screen is washed out any time there is any contrast. and of course no HDR support either
3D is the main selling point imo. but then you have to drop resolution so much lower or have potato graphics compared to flat gaming
>>
>>744550192
In my experience VR is a cool gimmick for about 5 minutes, then you see through the illusion and it's just a more uncomfortable monitor.
Maybe people with low IQ can be deluded longer so they're more impressed with the effect.
>>
>>744554389
Don't know if I agree with this.

>>
>>744554690
I would wait for steam frame but make sure they fix controller support / steam input
games with regular controllers or sim equipment are more fun than waggleslop
>>
>>744555421
idk man I just thought it was funny
but also standalone vr is the distant endgame, being cabled to a big box is just too unergonomic
>>
>>744550383
VR porn is uncanny. It's exciting and novel at first but just gets more unsettling, plus it takes up a bunch of fucking hard drive space. It's novel to get a better sense of actresses proportions but it's also kind of nasty because it captures all their imperfections as well. A lot of them have "kissing" scenes which I just found super offputting.

most current CPUs will run any VR game just fine unless you're larping in VRChat with another 20 gay furries.
VRAM requirement for VR is basically 6GB or higher, but I recommend RTX cards with more than 8GB for your GPU so you can try Ray-Tracing in VR.
>>
Say I wanted a VR headset to watch 3D movies or to have the illusion of an Imax screen to myself. VR gaming makes me sick so I'd do very little if any of that. any recommendations for a headset?
>>
>>744563516
You don't even need VR for that they make those virtual display glasses

i had both pimax crystal super ultrawide and dream air - god did they suck in comparison to meta quest 3 for simracing

crystal super ultrawide was more comparable to meta quest 2 due to shitty fresnel lenses - sweet spot was unbearably small, a huge downgrade from pancake lenses. most of the ultrawide headsets were borked and pimax software didn't properly utilize their wide fov - my unit was stuck with around 105 hfov, and was randomly disconnecting from pc at any given time.

pimax dream air was a bit better, but still full of jank. the lenses are smaller than quest 3 so you are less immersed, there is a lot of glare, light bleed due to thin fabric between headset and face cushion. the biggest issue is that the motion tracking fucking sucked - whenever you tilted your head the world moved with you, making you sick. the hfov was ok, comparablle to quest 3, but it wasn't as sharp towards the sides of the screen. so for example you saw there is a side mirror in your car, but it wasn't sharp enough to see what is inside it. you have to move your eyes to see what is in the car's mirror, but the second you move your eyes, the mirror disappears completely - the hfov becomes very narrow the second you move your eyes to the side. this does not happen on quest 3.

they force the fucking dmas speakers on you - crystal super has some speaker mount bulge right above your ears, making it impossible to use your own headphones. dream air is better in this regard, but for some reason, the audio is forced to be super compressed as soon as you launch the game via pimax xr. it is set system-wide, so even if you use your own headphones, it makes the audio unbearable.

dream air headsets are already failing - the display port connector is load-bearing on headset stems, so just putting it on/off your head damages the connectors. the cable is the cheapest shit ever, with blazing hot box right on your neck

shit hardware, shit design, shit quality control, shit company

This. I grabbed a $10 phone headset which is basically a pair of lenses to see if I'd like VR or not. Good enough test to see if you can justify wasting $350 on a proper headset or not
>>
>>744550192
I'm just waiting for Pimax to have more Linux support in supposedly Q4 2026. Hopefully this can then be tied into mainline Monado/Envision rather than being Pimax bloatware, since that would take work off their hands.
>>744555502
Standalone is just the last remnant of phoneslop from the 2010s. Bundling a full computer with a headset worked when it was something cheap that was offset by the increased revenue from ads, selling data and vendor lock-in, but with all the components going up in cost, that's not going to work anymore unless the consumer is willing to eat hundreds of dollars in upcharge for a headset that becomes obsolete 3-5 times as fast. The Steam Frame will hopefully be the final nail in the coffin for standalone ARMslop simply due to being Linux ARMslop which will increase the viability of streaming to portable x86.

>How immersive is a high end vr headset, compared to a top of the line oled monitor?
So at 4k an eye (I'm being generous) with 110 FOV, you're looking at a two-thirds of what a bog standard 60 PPD monitor can do. Or a third of what a high end 120 PPD setup can do.

In layman's terms, that's 768p.
>>
Ever since unity released a VR game template, VR has been effortless slop.
>>
>>744550192
A Dream Air PPD is roughly a 1080p 27" monitor at arms length.
>>
>>744551652
I run 5300x3800 per eye 90hz in most games
>>
>>744573462
Technically yes but you get two different image hitting your eyeballs so your brain perceive it as much sharper
>>
>>744573576
That isn't at all how vision works.
>>
>>744573576
that only worked with 3D TV and interlaced images
>>
>>744565969
And this is exactly why you retards think VR sucks.
Phonevr isnt VR, it's utter garbage. Fuck google for ever making that shit.
>>
>>744573814
I used it to check if I have motion sickness and if I enjoy the experience at all. I even managed to download some VR porn and that was already impressive. Why bother wasting $600 if $10 demo gives you the same overall feeling? You don't need to see every knob in your autistic simulator to know if it's for you.
>>
5800x ryzen and radeon 6700x
Can I tank the steam the frame?
>>
>>744575646
Been there, done that. Sure it's impressive for like 5 minutes, but it pales in comparison to even the crappiest VR headsets.
Using phonevr to check if you get motion sickness is a bad idea, your average phone won't be able to keep it's orientation stable (drifts a lot), or render with a high enough, stable frame-rate, both will give you motion sickness.
The overall feeling is also terrible. I went from phonevr > Lenovo explorer > Quest2 > Quest3 and each time the difference was massive.
I don't even want to try any of the really high-res headsets that exist, as I fear I won't be able to go back, as that shit is really expensive.
For anyone who didn't experience VR yet, I'd recommend checking it out at a VR arcade or something, unless you want to screw yourself over with a subpar experience, but you do you.
>>
>>744575646
the question was whether you need a PCVR headset to just watch Stereo3D videos, so the answer is No, and a cardboadVR on your phone should be good enough.
What you're saying is 3DoF on a Cardboard and a 6DoF PCVR experience is not much different, which just makes no fucking sense, because it's a completely different thing.
>>
>>744576194
That really depends if you used a 2019 phone or a 2025 phone
>>
>>744577551
>and it 1080p 24inch at normal viewing distance
Lmao. 1080p 24 inch at normal viewing distance is 60 PPD, you dishonest troon. It's the minimum acceptable PPD.
>>
>>744577814
>Normal viewing distance
>70cm spits out the 45ppd figure and is considered a healthy viewing distance, 93 cm is 60ppd
ppd just doesn't make much sense for flat displays if the difference between acceptable and unacceptable is a slight lean forward or backward.
>>
>>744551652
yeah it's like 6k or 7k resolution basically... very very hard to run games at even 70-80fps in VR at that resolution.
Pretty much only the 4090 (barely) and 5090 runs games at such resolutions.. i heard the 5090 is much more powerful than the 4090 for VR specifically (some higher bandwidth stuff)
>>
>>744578150
The goal should always be a 60 PPD minimum. Sure, you can get closer and pixelate the image if you want, but what matters is that the 60 PPD sweet spot falls within the viewing distance sweet spot, which is 2-3 feet.
>>
>>744577750
Even a flagship phone only has a 1440px vertical resolution in VR, which is still pretty terrible by todays standard.
But yeah, the CPU/GPU probably improved enough to give decent performance. Not so sure about the orientation sensors though.

The overall experience is still way worse if we're talking about general use, and not the specific case of the original question on this chain.
For that the 1440 resolution is fine as well.

Is it worth it though? I'd say no. There are very few stereo movies, and the 3d effect is pretty terrible imho.

It's a 3rd party SteamVR driver to make headsets which make headsets SteamVR native.
It was made for MeganeX originally because Shiftall are fucking useless and couldn't manage to get their headset to render the native res of the panel.
It works on both MegnaeX and Pimax and probably others like Varjo etc.

Playing VR in standing up spinny mode is tiring as hell, especially because you don't actually walk, it's not natural to stand in one spot. I started playing by sitting down in a chair and using the joysticks to move around so having the lightest possible headset with the highest visual quality is what I want.
>>
>wired
honestly if you're going through the effort of installing rings on your ceiling just to avoid compression, consider gettting a dedicated router for vr with direct sightline to you instead
>>
>>744579769
im more bothered by the shitty FOV in headsets than having a cable around to be honest man...
sick and tired of binocular vision, it's been TEN YEARS already.
cable is a more minor issue for me
>>
>>744579801
I mostly play seated too anon, that's just another reason to not compromise on visual quality. The wire isn't even a problem seated.
Standing, yeah I get why people dislike it, or tie it to the ceiling (which still gives it a small tug). Personally I just clip the cable to my waist on the back.
>>
>>744550383

>>
>>744580169
It has the same shitty lenses so I don't see why you would want to do that
>>
>>744579492
Believe it or not those peope are vast minority of an already small consumer market which prefer wireless.
And honestly- with good router most games for most people are "good enough"
Even valve realized that and those who still maek wired exclusively will stop very soon.
Next gen wifi, and foviated rendering/streaming will improve focused area very close to cable as well reduce latency to something most people would nto even notice.
Thus- wired is dead, except as an option and that probably is more trouble for VR makers than skipping on it.

All I PERSONALLY want is really good lenses with high res OLED screen, good standalone functionality without meta shit. Basically something like steam frame just better or Play for Dream just not as janky.
>>
>>744580169
Consensus seems to be that it's janky and the controllers have connection issues since they connect to the pc via bluetooth and not to the headset itself. They do go for cheap on the used market since people use them like once and then never again. I'm going to wait and see how the frame is.
>>
>>744580326
True, but they also happen to be the enthusiasts, who are willing to spend a lot more for uncompromised quality.
I cant claim to see the future though, we'll see how well the Dream Air does.
I'd like to think that wired will stick around in a few headsets.
>>
>>744580276

>>
>>744580326
But you can theoretically just get all the advantages of wireless with just a portable computer and Wifi 6E and above, most of the issue with that is that people are more interested in standalone development, but there's nothing keeping the same tech from being applied to wired headsets with projects like electric maple. A Displayport headset can be wireless, but a wireless headset can't be a Displayport headset.
Dedicated wireless is more likely to be on its way out with both the storage/RAM shortages and ARM chipsets getting more expensive adding a significant amount to the pricetag which is just going to go on top of whatever price you're paying for a premium niche headset. I just don't see standalone headsets persisting in anything other than the low- to mid-range like the Quest 3s where they are cheap enough to still make money off of ads and selling your data, or alternatively I guess in the actual mid-range but with a massive pricetag compared to their quality and still serving ads and selling your data.
