What's the ideal JRPG party size? How many main characters is too many?
>>744551913>What's the ideal JRPG party size?5
a million niggas in a row
>>7445519134 to 6, depends on the type of game. If it's a more traditional JRPG, I prefer 4, but if it's a dungeon crawler I like 6. Etrian Odyssey's intentional compromise of 5 was a good choice too, as I feel a sixth party member would make it a bit too easy.
>>744551913Any more than five and I end up benching some party members the entire game unless each one has essential skills for certain battles.
4. 3 always feels like a downgrade made to simplify the game. 5 feels superfluous.
>>744551913You shouldnt have more characters than the amount of characters sllowed in battle.
I was so mad when FF7 came out and we were down to only 3 party members. Then halfway through the game I'm already wondering what to do with my 3rd party member because the other 2 already occupy every RPG role combined.
The problem with party sizes is that most RPGs require roles to be filled, which typically occupies 2/3 slots of a 3/4/5 man party. I love doing wild roster combos but a lot of games (e.g. Etrian Odyssey 1) hamstring players wanting to do weird things. This is even evident as far back as FF1 where anything other than Fighter/Black Mage/White Mage/X was a handicap for a first time player. So basically I want RPGs where characters can fill multiple roles so viable team comps are maxed.
>>744551913X * 2 + X/2(rounded up).X = party size
>>744551913I dunno the exact number, but Chrono Cross and Suikoden 2 have too fucking many.
>>744553503is the first formula the total amount of party members and X is how many can be on the field at once?
Ideal size is 1 (one)
