Should I play MH4U/3U or just play GU?
>>
4U is the only one worth playing.
>>
GU is like an ocean of 1,300 quests that you get lost in when you've already beat Dos or FU, 3U and 4U but can't stomach Worldslop.

I tried getting into World and Rise, used to play them a lot, tried playing recently, but they bored me to death. Are the older games different? Should I start with FU?

They're all good in their own ways:
-3U has underwater combat and a generally pleasant tropical/water aesthetic.
-4U has the most coherent storyline and some very nice maps and a nice balance of quantity vs quality.
-GU is has virtually no story to speak of and is like a compilation of almost all the notable monsters/armors/etc of all the previous games. It has the most monsters and armor/weapons. Styles add an extra dimension to the game, but they have a decidedly "not classic MH" feel (although you can just stick to guild style for classic MH feel).

No matter which one you choose, if you enjoy MH, you'll have fun.

Would you say that they're better than all of the newer games?
>>
i found out gu made some changes to weapons that i dont like
they took AED from guard point away, it plays more like how modern savage axe plays than anything

this has probably fucked me up more than anything, because i could feel myself missing gu when i play 4u, but my main weapon i like the most doesnt have its categorically most classic move. how did that get through testing

The older games tend to not let you get away with bulldozing through with a generic set. Things that matter more than the new games include elemental weakness zones and monster part hardness. Example: in FU you can go for the highest raw damage weapon you can but it can bounce on the wrong area of a monster more easily and leave you open to counterattacks. So there's more a sense of plotting out your advancement in a series of steps rather than being handed a golden key.
Dos has even more restrictions on resources
3U is in many ways an ideal junction of the franchise where it isn't too gimmicky but also doesn't make you jump through hoops to advance. If you play 3U make sure you use the fan patch that removes the defense modifier that the english version has since the gaijin were given an easy mode that you can't opt out of in-game.

I'd say 4U, with 3U being a close second
Idk if its still an issue in GU but I couldn't stand fighting anything in that game, everything spent half the fight moving to other areas, made every fight a slog. I also hated how they raped the Charge Blade's moveset

play them all zoomie, they're all good
play 3U first if you can, each game implements more QoL changes you might miss if playing them in reverse order

just install the 4U CB mod from gamebanana, it doesn't break the game in any way
>mfw installed it yet barely use the GP into AED because I use aerial CB and its better to counter attacks with an aerial dodge into aerial AED

Play GU

Two hours of a 5,000 hour game. And you think you have an opinion worth sharing about it?

Older games have a bunch of gameplay loops that got removed as quality of life improvements in newer games, for example you need to be carrying pickaxes, and bug nets to actually collect from nodes, and these tools break as you use them depending on the quality, with you being able to hold 3 of the shitty ones, 4 of the normal ones, and 5 of the good ones. These tools take up space in your items you can bring for quests, and unlike modern games you can't deposit ores that aren't part of a quest, meaning you need to end your gathering quest to resupply if you didn't get enough of whatever you were mining/bug-catching for. You also can't eat food at camp, so if you forgot to eat a meal before going on the quest you'll have to do without. No swapping weapons on quests either, so make sure to bring the right element weapon, and whetstones aren't an infinite item so you have to hope to mine one (if you brought a pickaxe) if you run out on a mission.

I really cannot believe how many hours I spent just dealing with everything you described and the craziest part is I don't regret it at all because somehow it just added to the immersion of the game

regardless, rise spoiled the shit out of me and now I can't really enjoy the older MH games

Start with 3U. It's comfy and the monsters and maps are way better than the other generations
