No idea. Knew plenty of people that would get red ringed then go out and buy another.
>>744558694Xbox 360 was mostly popular in America so Microsoft was able to deliver replacement consoles quite easily. Back then we lived in a real country so Microsoft could eat the cost no problem, and the customer service department wasn't entirely run by Indian scammers.

>>744558694They got a year head start. Xbox 360 came out in 2005, the Wii and PS3 didn't follow until fall of 2006. The Red Ring of Death was a disaster but they had a full year of having zero competitors in the Gen 7 field in which they could still push the 360 unopposed as well as having a year to get the replacements mailed out to angry customers and release new 360's that were less bugged, just in time for PS3/Wii to hit shelves.

It was cheap and out first, it had a whole ass year ahead of the ps3 and wii, so even with the issues, the 360 was the better choice for anything multigen, in the west. Plus MS hyper-marketed that motherfucker, they spent tens of millions of dollars completely sucking up any dev studio that was working at that time in japan for exclusives. They started the whole paid exclusive trend and especially timed exclusives. It ALL stemmed from them putting out a product too fast they knew was fucked, and trying to sidestep the issue with other novelties.Really though, it did kill the brand for most people I know that had one, they'd usually return it once, get a new one, then when it RRoD'd they'd usually do the towel trick and sell it to gamestop. I wouldn't be surprised to hear 20% of the sales of the 360 were actually just same stock due to all of the replacements.
>>744558694Probably because the PS3 was $600 and the X360 $300.

>>744558694Having the sheer monetary reserves to tank it. >>744559475>multipleI never had a hardware issues in my nearly 30 years of using any game console but on the off chance you did somehow overheat yours you would just get it back within a few weeks anyway. Also besides those formerly good exclusives you also had a ton of stuff on the arcade.

>>744563446The problem was that overheating the system wouild cause the metal plate on top of the CPU to expand and lift off, taking the thermal paste with it. By superheating it and wrapping it in towels you basically were trying to melt the thermal paste off the plate back onto the CPU and reconnect the metal plate, but this never lasted.

On the initial production line at the factory in the run-up to launch something like a third of consoles were failing QA because they were already red-ringing. They apparently did not bother to look into what was causing this at all and just assumed that the ones that weren't RRODing would be fine in the long-term (according to the official history, which if they were willing to admit that leads me to believe they were aware of what the issue was but decided they would not or could not do anything at that point)
>>744563647Why didnt you send it in?
>>744563526>pay2play onlinethat started with the OG xbox. also, not defending micrococks or anything here, but back in the early 00s paying for online functionality made some sense. back then there wasn't giant server farms all over the world that you could just lease out some space in and get global coverage for your online gaming service practically overnight. And what server space was available to lease was expensive compared to nowadays. So they either had to build it themselves, and all the memory and storage for that wasn't cheap back then (although cheaper than today's prices, thanks AI fags), or pay a premium for leased server space. either way they were gonna have to shell out a good chunk of change, and they simply passed that price onto the players, which honestly was fair. But nowadays with all the infrastructure already in place and long payed for, there is absolutely no reason for the outrageous prices they charge. renting servers for even something as large as an MMO is pennies on the dollar compared to 20 years ago.
>>744564002Pay for internet access started with the Dreamcast actually and it was $22/month if you could believe it

>>744558694I'll answer seriously: even though Micro$oft knew they had a turd in their hands, their play at being the first one to reach that level of sophistication paid off, because gamers were yearning for it. Sometimes it's not about being the best, it's about being first.

>>744558694Because they spent 1 billion on a 3 year extended warranty (by that time the revised boards replaced most of the old shit) and because consoles were notoriously shit quality in general. But this didn't stop them selling. Just like now, if you have the software advantage you can do anything. The PS5 is much worse build quality than the Series but it doesn't matter. The Switch 1 is an absolutely turd but it doesn't matter.
>>744561843Halo 3 was a big hit but you weren't going to convert Sony fans with that alone. It was the PS3 fucking up that gave Xbox the edge.

>>744563962>A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 miles per hour. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average cost of an out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is greater than the cost of a recall, we recall the cars and no one gets hurt. If X is less than the cost of a recall, then we don't recall.

Don't even get me started on how abysmal dogshit the PS3's servers were or how many times they got hacked in the 7th generation, one of them compromising 77 million accounts and keeping the PSN down for just shy of a month. The fact that Xbox won the 7th generation by a landslide despite their launch console being a lemon and the PS3 having better hardware is fucking astounding. It makes me realize just how long the people running things at Sony's Playstation division have been this egregiously retarded, because apparently it's bare minimum 15 years now that they've just been nosediving the brand straight into the ground. Sony won again in the 8th gen, but only because Xbox focused too much on an entertainment box instead of a gaming machine. They never really stopped the nosedive. It's just that Xbox joined in for a while.

>>744569945You were literally paying Microsoft a monthly fee to be able to do that, but somehow i'm the jewish lemming in this scenario
The $600 pricetag of the PS3 and casual nature of the Wii positioned the xbox360 perfectly to be the midrange product that everyone accepted had a higher failure rate.
So what the hell is everyone going to do when the PS6 and Next Xbox are $1,000+?
>>744570332Not buy them unless the exclusives are incredible.
>>744570269It was an extremely common fix as was wrapping the mobo in tin foil and putting it in an oven on the lowest heat setting you had for a few minutes. Some people also just bought heat guns to do the same thing without baking the mobo (I did this one and it worked and has worked for years now). The entire point of it was to reflow the solder since it was low melt due to being lead free if I remember right.
>>744570426Fascinating, I don't remember anyone trying to fix the red-ring, we always just sent it off to get repaired/replaced.

PS3 still sold more in the end despite so many of 360's sales just being the consoles they had to resend to the same person, and PS3 ended up with the better library of exclusives. All Shitbox did was introduce all the worst fucking trends in the industry
>>744570332Ignore them. Helix basically doesn't exist as an option in anyone's minds and until the PS6 drops to normal levels it's basically only people who would willingly spend money on a PS5 Pro which is a much lower amount of people than the PS4 Pro was. Not to mention removing physical copies on the PS6 is going to be astronomically terrible for the PS6 due to Sony's monopoly and lack of secondary market leading to much worse sales for the consumer as a whole.Realistically everyone is just gonna continue making PS5 versions like how they're still making PS4 versions of games even to this day years after it should have been put to pasture with third-party disk manufacturers picking up Sony's slack, make Series versions of games but digital-only, and rely on the Switch 2 to basically carry the entire generation on its back as both Sony and Microsoft shoot each other in the head. I sincerely doubt it's gonna see more than like 20 million copies sold in under 3ish years simply due to the price. That's straight up prebuilt PC territory which people already find enormously hard to justify and the Switch 2's price of $450 was already considered pretty rough to swallow.>>744570527A lot of people didn't want to wait or didn't want to risk the Microsoft lottery of getting an RROD system right back to them which happened to a friend of mine three times in a row. In my case my RROD only happened when I powered it on in like 2018? 2019? So it wasn't even possible to get it done anyway.
>>744570123PS3 didn't cost "twice as much", the 20GB PS3 was only 100 bucks more than the 20GB 360 model, and the difference would be made up after 2 years of paying for Xbox live
>>744570269It wasn't a guaranteed fix, but I distinctly remember my buddy's 360 RROD'd just as Halo 3 released. He was so sad we couldn't play it, but I found someone describing the towel fix. He said "fuck it, might as well try" We kept it as flat and as still as we could, fried it for a few mins, left it to cool for a few hours just to be safe and we played Halo 3 all the way through that night.

>>744570621>I never gave a fuck about Halo, no one outside the US didYou are delusional. Halo was so immensely popular that 3 had over a million concurrent players online at one point. We even have heat maps directly showing where these people were, so unless you were Russian or South American you were very likely playing Halo at the time on the 360.>Seriously, what the fuck does this even meanHow are you not getting what he means? He means that at the time Playstation had no proper messaging system (Still has a terrible one on the PS3), was slow to do anything, lacked basic features like a party system for years and years, and because it didn't come with a mic by default no one talked on it. The 360 had all of this that the PS3 lacked. Every single game you played had people shooting the shit 24/7, partying up, and messaging each other and it's one of the most well known advantages the platform had.>The "servers" in multiplayer games were the sameAgain, how do you not get what he means? The 360 online had significantly more people playing even dead games. I played Singularity 4 years after it released and it still had active multiplayer servers on the 360. TF2 had an active scene even past when the PC version got items while the PS3 version was a wasteland with people abusing invisible stabs as Spy if you did get a match. It was also extremely stable no matter what you did whereas on PS3 enjoy lag city because everyone plays wifi.>Genuinely have zero memory of thisHow? Portal 2 literally could not be redeemed on Steam which was an advertising point of the PS3 version because of it. I played through the game like seven times on my PS3 waiting for the downtime to be over.>Won in what way? The PS3 took until the last two years to even remotely turn anything around as a system. For 90% of the generation the 360 spearheaded everything and objectively had the best version of every multiplat game barring Dragon's Dogma and arguably Asura's Wrath.
>>744570621You could have a private voice chat room of 15 people on mics. PS3 didn't have thst. I got a PS3 in 2013 and was blown away by how many features it didn't have compared to 360. You people could only communicate to eachother with text chat outside of multiplayer lobbies lol
>>744560974Exclusives were a small bulletpoint in the success of the 360, but OF THOSE exclusives, the ones that were really good (halo, Mass Effect, GoW, Fable, Dead Rising, etc...) were what kept the staying power going.>XBL was the first to have a "mature" online presence with VoIP, matchmaking, achievements, online store, and Friends List all in one, making it the first of its kind. The HUEG Xbox XBL was woefully obsolete>MASSIVE push for free month-passes for XBL in every game so people could get hooked>As said many times, it was out before PS3 and Wii so it was ahead of the curve and had a solid advantage>Both Nintendo and Playstations online networks were rudimentary and still immature. But they had to get it out the door, so it just was what it was. This gave the de facto console online win to the 360>The RRoD, while a massive pain in the ass to players, wasn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be since MS still at the time replaced it for free which many players were happy about (this would have been its death knell if they had not done this)>The 360's controller was a massive improvement over the HUEG Xbox's small controller and became the default designNow all of these things alone wouldn't have done much (except the improvements to XBL, and I contend that it was the shining jewel of the system), but all of those aspects wrapped together made the 360 a powerhouse. If you were making multiplat games, you made the 360 your primary console. But even then, with the PS3's architecture, making multiplats for it was a pain in the fucking ass for it.If PSN or Wii's online capabilities had been more robust, mature, and fleshed out, I think we'd be having a different conversation, albeit not a COMPLETELY different one. But these days, PSN its in a much better place than it was before.
>>744571020>This consideration does not factor into anyone's purchasing decisions because Xbox Live is not mandatory for anythingOh yeah you only had to miss out on multiplayer for the entire generation, on the console where half the reason people remember it for was muh Halo multiplayer. Get real lol, it's absolutely a factor>It was $500 at launch So only 100 bucks more expensive than the equivalent 360, and the difference would be made up after 2 years of paying to play online like I said. How is it any more ridiculous?>The 360 at launch had the Core variant which was $300.Why would you compare the most expensive PS3 model to the cheapest, shittiest 360 model that didn't even have Wi-fi, HDMI, or a fucking hard drive among many other things. Btw, have you actually TRIED playing games on of those? Even on my 360 Slim, playing a game installed to the HDD can get decently loud, and without installing the game to the HDD the console is so fucking loud it's genuinely impossible to even enjoy the game. On the original Core 360, combined with the looming failure rate, it has to be one of the worst fucking gaming experiences you could ever haveThe fact that they sold a shitty ass cheap model without basic features like a HDD (which retards wouldn't know about) to rope in poorfags into a miserable experience thinking they were getting a deal is not a ''pro'', it's fucking insulting. It was literally the flip-flops-and-socks Klarna console
>>744571564>Get real lol, it's absolutely a factorAgain, not mandatory. People would absolutely buy it after the fact but in the moment they didn't care.>How is it any more ridiculous?Because most people were buying the Core systems, not the base systems and basing their price points around those.>Why would you compare the most expensive PS3 model to the cheapest, shittiest 360 model that didn't even have Wi-fi, HDMI, or a fucking hard drive among many other things.Because Sony's entire launch was plagued with 599 US dollars as the focal point just like how the Xbone was with "We have a system for those users, it's called an Xbox 360". It doesn't matter in any way that there was a $100 cheaper model of the PS3, most people knew of it from the "599 US dollars" announcement. Just like how the Wii was known as the casual and grandparent console because of "Wii would like to play" and countless news stations talking about how it was popular in nursing homes.>Btw, have you actually TRIED playing games on of those? The 360 didn't even HAVE HDD installing until after the NXE update which was in late 2008 so everyone who played on one played off the disc and saved to a memory card. It's why patches had to be super small updates and why Valve in particular had to fight an uphill battle for The Orange Box and Left4Dead to get updates among other things.Digital gaming was not widespread at all at the time nor was an HDD necessary until the Summer of Arcade promotion was pushed and indie games like Braid became instant hits because Microsoft wanted to get people buying from their digital storefront.
>>744558694>was a xbox kid from day 1 (sold the 360 to go full gamur PC back in my college days)>always mega paranoid about RROD>not exactly the best carer of hardware either>disk reader always worked>never crashed>brought it to and from various houses my family moved to>sell it to a friend of a friend>hear years later it fucking died like a month after he got it from mesorry you blew your dad’s money, kevin. thanks for bankrolling the PC that got me all through college and for a few years after though
>>744571743>Again, not mandatory. People would absolutely buy it after the fact but in the moment they didn't care.Such disingenuous bullshit Like I said people might have been tricked into thinking it was a deal because the console itself was cheaper, but then they realised they would have to pay a subscription to play multiplayer which most people obviously wanted to do. You're not even saying anything. Did you actually read my post or do you just want to get the last word in?
>>744558694Mostly because back then they would take it back no questions asked and repair/send a new one and just unironically most people having more disposable income back then and not giving a shit
>>744572059>but then they realised they would have to pay a subscription to play multiplayer which most people obviously wanted to do. So it was a factor, lolWhich they only cared about after they purchased the system. You are acting like anyone cared about this in the moment of their purchase.>Ok, I don't care about memes from 20 years ago.It doesn't matter if you don't care. We are talking about how and why people bought the 360 over the PS3 at the time. People chose to avoid the PS3 because of their disastrous price announcement. The system basically didn't exist in anyone's mind until the Slim release and Uncharted 3 came out at which point even the sales start showing a reversal of their dismal sales figures. You listing off that there was a cheaper PS3 version at launch means nothing and anyone alive at the time knew this. Sony's PS3 launch was horrific, the Sixaxis was garbage because it had no rumble, its launch games were Lair and Heavenly Sword which were laughably bad, it had no games on the horizon for people to care about, and most importantly it was priced astronomically high compared to the extremely cheap and competitive 360 that everyone bought because the higher priced model was irrelevant to anyone but enthusiasts.>You're not even saying anything.I am saying something and you're ignoring it. Your entire argument is that people had a cheaper PS3 version so they should have been going to that when the reality was that all your complaints that you have about the 360 being loud or $100 less than the PS3 are irrelevant and are only something that matter through your current view of the system. They didn't matter at the time because to every normal person the PS3 was a $600 device, not $500, it had no gaems, it had a significantly worse multiplayer scene because no one bought it, it had no achievement system, it had worse performing multiplats, and the 360 had everything it had but cheaper.
>>744564083I didn't realize that, innerestin' history fact.
>>744571195>You are delusional. Halo was so immensely popular that 3 had over a million concurrent players online at one pointNo, you are delusional. Once again like the other guy this is just you reflecting your personal experience. The ''social console'' was whichever one most people around you had, in my case it was the PS3 as I genuinely only ever know 1 other guy that had a 360. And again never had an issues meeting new people online, if you really became friends with someone and chatted all the time then you moved it over to a chat or voice program on PC>The 360 online had significantly more people playing even dead games.Weird cause I had the opposite experience. Before backcompat with future Xbox consoles factored into the equasion, games like Dark Souls were way more active on PS3 than 360>For 90% of the generation the 360 spearheaded everything and objectively had the best version of every multiplatMassive exaggeration, most games ran about the same on both consoles, and people always point to the same few exceptions like RDR1 and Bayonetta 1 (which was ported by a different studio) or Bethesda games (Oblivion aside) where the PS3 versions were much worse
>>744558694because microsoft salaved the situation.I got RRoD, sent my 360 for repairs for free, got it back in 2 weeks and worked up until I sold it to Best Buy for $150 many years later.
>>744571195I'm in that pic!
>>744572270Ok, you wanna talk about marketing strategy. I'm talking about the actual product you got. Yes they managed to convince a lot of people with the slightly lower initial price, but then you would end up spending far more as you were locked into paying for a yearly subscription for the entire generation if you wanted to play online, just to have to deal with the same P2P connection in games anyway which was a joke. Yes, they did a good job roping people into the shitty cheap model, but the Core 360 was a joke with it missing the most basic of features and was an insult to costumers
>>744572832>The 360's popularity is already massively skewed towards the USHalo's own heatmaps show you it was immensely popular in Europe as well. Was the 360 primarily popular in the US? Yes. That doesn't mean that Europe wasn't also buying it at the time.>Genuinely never knew about it or knew anyone who played it before coming hereThen you're a reclusive European, Russian, or South American because Halo 3's launch was one of the most massive announcements at the time. Everyone knew about it. It was literally one of the biggest announcements of 2006. "Finish the fight" was a phrase everyone at the time knew. You can even Google this to see just how everyone will back up this fact. I didn't even get a 360 until like 2007 with my only Halo experience being the CE client shared around here to play multiplayer at the time so I didn't even really pay attention to the series. Not to mention Arby n' the Chief basically established Machinima as a brand off of Halo 3's release.>Always had people talking on mic on CoD, do you think people buying a cheap mic was an impossibility or something lol.No one is saying the PS3 didn't have communication, it had significantly less is the point because it didn't come with it by default like the 360 did.>if you really became friends with someone and chatted all the time then you moved it over to a chat or voice program on PCYou are a complete outlier to the general public and how normalfags worked at the time. Call of Duty games were instant.>most games ran about the same on both consolesOff the top of my head Assassin's Creed, Arkham, GTA4, Bioshock, Oblivion, and I believe Mass Effect were all notably worse on PS3.
>>744558694It was not a localized issue. PS3 had YLOD as well, and the GPU's from that era were not that reliable either. There was no "escape to the other side", since both Nvidia and ATI had the same shipment of chips which was fucked from the getgo and raped entire batches of hardware. In the end you couldn't really complain about your house buring when the entire town is in a firestorm. Now, how this did not kill the entire idea of consoles is a better question, since when your GPU died you could easily replace it unlike console fuckery, hence why mustards didn't complain as much.
because they replaced it for free while the wii was shit for anything but firs tparty and the ps3 was $600every other answer is pseudo bullshit
>>744559475oh look another halo hater revealing he never played it or owned the console
>>744573216>I'm talking about the actual product you got.Which wasn't what the topic of thread or post you originally quoted at all. I was from the start talking about why the 360 was immensely popular at the time and beat out the PS3 on top of why it didn't die because of the RRoD.If you want to simply talk about quality then even in that respect the 360 had a better controller, initially stronger first-party lineup, achievements, a better developed social system in general for multiplayer, more populated multiplayer severs across the board instead of only in specific games because people wanted to get their money's worth so they tended to spread out, a significantly better and faster UI in the Blades than the XMB ever was, better visuals and performance in basically any game you could think of even when they were Japanese-produced as it usually had higher resolutions or no screen tearing, the XIG initiative later on, Japanese-exclusives from Treasure and Cave later on, exclusive titles to the Arcade, came with a mic by default so everyone used it, and more. The PS3 had better BC, better build quality even when considering the YLOD, ran way quieter, and didn't require you to pay for online. In exchange it took them years and years to even get their multiplayer solution to get even halfway to what the 360 had, you couldn't even play music while playing a game and to this day I don't believe you can but I'd have to check, the messaging system is a complete mess, the trophy system to this day still requires you to sit through a load to upload them and most early games never got a patch for them to be added, its store runs so badly that after their "final" patch to it it constantly crashes and can hard crash the system, and until Sony pushed their PSN-only games like Fat Princess it didn't succeed digitally either. The 360 only really went down the crapper when they pivoted to a focus on the Kinect which is coincidentally also when the PS3 started to pick up.
>>744558694Looking back at it, it was crazy how a console that was constantly failing managed to be so popular. Then again the Switch was super successful despite its controllers breaking all the time...I guess the lesson we can learn here is that as long as a console has good exclusives fans are going to overlook any technical problems.
>>744573234> because Halo 3's launch was one of the most massive announcements at the timeYou're just recounting your personal experience. The biggest launches of that generation like Black Ops and Battlefield 3 far eclipsed Halo>You are a complete outlier to the general public and how normalfags worked at the time. No one went off-platform let alone to talk on Skype or Ventrilo on PC, they played in parties every single day and talked over mic.You think getting on voice programs on PC to chat with people you played games with was a rarity in the 2000's? Everyone back then had a PC in the home, unless it was different in the US>Off the top of my head Assassin's Creed, Arkham, GTA4, Bioshock, Oblivion, and I believe Mass Effect were all notably worse on PS3.Oblivion was better on PS3. Anyway, point is, there wasn't a gulf in performance between both consoles like people pretend there was, like I said most games ran about the same with some exceptionshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgmeE6zLK8QThe games that ran like crap on one console usually ran like crap on the other

>>744574359>The biggest launches of that generation like Black Ops and Battlefield 3 far eclipsed HaloLook at when those games actually released. We're not talking about the whole generation, just generalizing. Halo defined years of that generation's introduction. Even then Black Ops sold 1.5x more on the 360 than the PS3 and this was at a point where the PS3 was starting to sell well.https://www.gamedeveloper.com/game-platforms/exclusive-i-black-ops-i-for-xbox-360-sells-nearly-5-million-in-u-s-You're right that around ODST and Reach (So like 2010ish?) it started to fall off as a brand in general primarily because Call of Duty took over as the major dudebro brand, but Halo defined early gen 7.>Everyone back then had a PC in the home, unless it was different in the USPC was not a thing in the US at all. PC was for businessmen and enthusiasts. My family didn't even get a PC past a 98 until like 2005. I had to rely on library computers and random family computers to play Runescape or Maplestory. Hell, it still is. People believe it's prohibitively expensive and normalfags only really do PC if it's off their school computers or family PCs. I'm like the only one in my friend group or family who even has a PC capable of playing games released recently.>Oblivion was better on PS3It was visually a bit better and loaded a bit faster but was worse in terms of stability and crashed more often. I can't remember if it also had the save bloating bug or if that started with FO3 and FNV which were basically the worst versions on PS3.>there wasn't a gulf in performance between both consoles like people pretend there wasIt wasn't some enormous gulf, but the 360 version of any game nearly always had sharper textures, better performance, higher resolution, and no screen tearing. Screen tearing in particular was a big one because it was essentially free on the 360 and prohibitive to do so on the PS3.
>>744558694Not consistent enough and the freeride until PS3 release built momentum it was the ONLY "Next-Gen" for a good while, latter releases also reduced the rate of it happening, i never had it happen to mine for example. It was only when it had been out on the market for a good while the RRODs from the launch units became common and at that point they started releasing the revisions. And it wasn't like the BONE was a roaring success anyway.
Dude just wrap it with a towel haha
>>744574683>It was visually a bit better and loaded a bit faster but was worse in terms of stability and crashed more oftenHaven't heard anything about that, I've played it myself in full with no crashes> the 360 version of any game nearly always had sharper textures, better performance, higher resolution, and no screen tearingEh, it such a minute difference in most games that you wouldn't notice unless you got the measuring tools outhttps://imagequalitymatters.blogspot.com/2010/08/tech-analysis-singularity-ps3-vs-360.htmlSharper textures, I don't think so, certainly not to any noticeable extent, maybe in very very early gen titles. And if you didn't install to the HDD then you'd have horrible texture loading on 360Better resolution, not really, basically all games ran about the same. Even in something like GTA4 (which people always tout as a much superior 360 port) where the PS3 version has a slightly lower resolution disadvantage, in practice the 360 version ends up looking more jaggedhttps://youtu.be/qRSGyFWICKA?si=VXdC4ga7tuZALtCY&t=254Just look at the shadows from the train overpass at 4:14 and how much worse they look on 360, and the worse jaggies at 4:26 on 360Also pretty sure the 360 versions tended to have more screen tearing precisely in trade for slightly better framerate
>>744559932They also had PGR and Forza
>>744558694gamers are cattle. Also console wars were serious business.
As a zoomer i still remember the schoolyard arguments we had, the primary reasons people went for it over the ps3 was price and graphical qualityThere was pretty much no brand loyalty at the time because the ps2 was ubiquitous, literally everyone had one and original xbox was seen as something of a novelty. And funny enough the wii was never seen as a "serious" console but everyone had one anyway because gen x parents went mad over that shit
>>744576191>Haven't heard anything about thathttps://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?t=29922It was fairly common, even UESP members mention how it's the buggiest version of the lot.>And if you didn't install to the HDD then you'd have horrible texture loading on 360Wasn't this primarily later on when HDD installs became more and more mandatory? I think that only started around the Kinect's introduction. PS3 was at the mercy of the game offering an HDD install at all like the PSP did if you wanted to cut out a lot of load times or texture pop-in which was on a game-by-game basis. But I also know it wasn't as big of an issue that I can recall. I know with Yakuza 1&2 HD and I think the Battride War games if I didn't install like 10-20GB of data to the HDD the load times were 3+ seconds longer, but those are exclusives and not multiplats.>Better resolution, not really, basically all games ran about the same.It was noticeable because PS3 games tended to run from anything around 540p to 6I think20p whereas the 360 was pretty much always 720p. Later in the generation they were virtually always in parity though. At worst PS3 might lack some effects to stay at the resolution but that's it in most cases. Bioshock Infinite is an example where PS3 was 640p.https://www.digitalfoundry.net/articles/digitalfoundry-bioshock-infinite-face-off>Also pretty sure the 360 versions tended to have more screen tearing precisely in trade for slightly better framerateIt was all over the place. Dragon's Dogma for example is what you say.https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/626515-dragons-dogma/62885902But then Asura's Wrath is the opposite.https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/605975-asuras-wrath/62103376Binary Domain had fairly regular frame dips on PS3 (I remember when I got to the city bit this was a problem) while 360 was basically a stable 30 with very rare almost never seen tearing.https://sega-addicts.com/2012/02/05/the-obligatory-binary-domain-ps3-vs-360-comparison-post/
how didn't this immediately kill the brand?
If you are a zoomer, it’s probably hard for you to understand. I was 21 when the 360 dropped. It was the first console I actually bought on lunch day. It fucking ruled. For me the 360 is tied with the ps2 for favourite library. The PS3 was expensive. The only dudes I knew that had PS3 around launch were weebs basically. That changed by the end of the decade. The mid to late 2000s was all about the 360, but the 2010s was a bit different. I bought a PS3 in 2010. I played my PS3 more after that.
>>744577657Because it's a good product and everyone with a brain realizes that the pricing being fucked up isn't really Valve's fault at the moment. Not that i'd ever pay the asking price for that box at the moment, but the device itself is really cool.
>>744558694Wii was a gay waggle toy for kids and moms and PS3 was five hundred and ninety nine yew ess sollars
It was a combo of Microsoft sucking up and fixing the RROD affected machines at massive cost, nd PS3 fumbling through its early days burdened by high cost, bad exclusives, worse multiplats etc.By the time PS3 started becoming a better ecosystem, RROD issues were basically fixed in the Xbox mobo revisions of that time. But yeah, it could have really fucked MS up if their main opponent wasn’t also having a bad time with their console release. But now they survived RROD only to get fucked by the Kinect + media player strategy retardation.
>>744558694How did this even happen? I have had my 360 for YEARS and it never got the red ring of death.
>>744578732Bad solder combined with components that got really hot in early mobo versions, before they fixed it in silent revisions by using better solder and using chips made with more efficient processes, using less power and generating less heat. Not much you could do to prevent it if you had one from a bad batch.
>>744578732is it one of the og 360s? I've had like three, but only the original one that didn't have hdmi and had like 8gb hdd or something every rrod, the other two are fine to this day.

My 360 dying is what made me a PC gamer
>>744577610>It was fairly common, even UESP members mention how it's the buggiest version of the lot.Like I said, never experienced any crashes personally. And I don't see anything about the PS3 version being especially buggy there. Not any buggier than the 360 version at least, but that's Bethesda games>It was noticeable because PS3 games tended to run from anything around 540p to 6I think20p whereas the 360 was pretty much always 720p.That wasn't the norm tho. And like I showed even in cases like GTA4 despite the 360 having a theoretical small resolution advantage it ends up producing a worse, more jaggy imageSo I wouldn't say that 360 games had ''better resolution'', I would only say that if we lived in a world where Xbox 360 consistently ran games at 1080p while PS3 only ran them at 720p or something, but that's not the case. It would be more accurate to say it had, very occasionally, an inperceptibly small resolution advantage that wouldn't even necessarily translate to a better imageThere was a far bigger difference in average resolution between OG Xbox and PS2
>>744558823How does somebody even come up with a solution like this?>"my xbox is broken, I bet wrapping it in towels and letting it overheat for 20 minutes will fix it
>>744558823The towel trick "fixed" it long enough for you to take it to gamestop and sell it and the take that money and buy another one. Leaving you with some cash and the "working" xbox now their liability when it definitely fails again after running well for a bit.
>>744579321It was just to make it appear in working order. Gamestop would buy and refurbish red ringed xboxs but you would be paid as much for the system.
>>744558804>>744558838they would replace your xbox for free
>>744579286>GTA4 despite the 360 having a theoretical small resolution advantage it ends up producing a worse, more jaggy imageYour specific cherry picked example differed because the anti-aliasing method is different between the PS3 and 360 versions and not because of the rendering res.360 used MSAA, which had sharper detail. PS3 and specifically GTA4 used QQAA, which made the picture more blurry, but tries best to hide the shimmering. And this is exactly that, shimmering and not aliasing, because if you actually go to your comparison (like the devil wheel) then you will notice that the count of the actual jaggies on the screen is the same between both versions.Sharper image is always more advantageous, because you can always have natively a worse, smeared picture by using lower output resolution and/or AV cables instead of HDMI on your 360, but you cannot out of the box make the PS3 render at higher res or change the AA method without homebrew or modding.

>>744579286>And I don't see anything about the PS3 version being especially buggy there.Third post. OP even mentions he knows it's the buggiest.>That wasn't the norm tho.https://www.digitalfoundry.net/articles/digitalfoundry-xbox360-vs-ps3-round-28-face-offGenerally it was. I'm not going to force you to read through all this, but using this specific article as an example 12 out of the 15 or 16 games run at lower resolutions than the 360 counterparts. Only one game is 540p (Avatar) while the rest are below 720p at either 544p, 576p, or 640p.>an inperceptibly small resolution advantage720p to 540p is roughly 40% less pixels so that's actually fairly perceptible. You're right that if it's like 720p to 640p it's not gonna be terrible but it's pretty noticeable.
>>744558694Every console shit the bed during that generation>360 had a 30% failure rate>PS3 had shit performance, less games, and cost more>Wii's hardware was a generation behind, and the motion control gimmick wasn't worth it because 90% of games didn't even use it in a fun way
>>744558694cause it didn't happen to me
>>744579669Really moving the goalposts and splitting hairs here. The point is, there just isn't a significant difference in resolution between both consoles. Without using measuring tools you would never tell that PS3 GTA4 is 640p or whatever instead of 720p
>>744558694Xboxes were cheap because they didn't use some fancy hardware built on an architecture from xenu, they still are cheap if you want an original and the emulator basically runs flawlessly. My original first gen 360 got the RROD and I fixed it using the screw and washer method, it still works to this day. I never did finish halo 3, maybe I should go back.
>>744558694back then companies couldn't get away with selling everyone a lemon and doing nothing about it. of course now it is impossible to kill an established brand because people will willingly buy lemons and then actively defend them on the internet.
>>744579321that melts the tin and re-solders the broken pin
>>744579321An RRoD in general is almost always caused by the system either being played long enough that the solder melts and then bridging contacts or old age simply causing the cheap lead-free solder they used to crack and cause a poor connection on a chip, usually the CPU.When you use the towel trick, the oven baking, or a heat gun you are generally heating up the CPU if I remember right to reflow the solder so regardless if it bridged or it had some separation/cracking issues it's like it's brand new. The problem with the towel trick and oven baking is that it can damage capacitors and other components due to how hot you're getting the individual parts for an extended period of time rather than a heat gun where you can target the heat so they were prone to failure whereas the heat gun can focus heat but you had to use tin foil to shield the parts aside from the CPU for the best success when using it.
>>744579853>Third post. OP even mentions he knows it's the buggiest.I wouldn't say one random forum post's personal anecdote is definitive evidence>Generally it was. I'm not going to force you to read through all this, but using this specific article as an example 12 out of the 15 or 16 games run at lower resolutions than the 360 counterparts.I don't know where you got 16 games. This is a pretty small and random selection of games out of the entire PS3 and 360 library. I mean Splatterhouse, Nail'd, James Bond 007: Blood Stone, TRON: Evolution, these aren't exactly heavy hitters. But even in your own article it is stated how most of these are basically identical in performance. It's hard to draw any other conclusions without any visual comparisonsI'm not sure why you're so insistent on this other than wanting to get the last word in. If you did a blind test on most PS3/360 games you most definitely wouldn't be able to tell apart which is which, you certainly wouldn't make a choice based on these occasional, inperceptible resolution differenceshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAKlmzOzoAY

>>744558694Blame Taiwanese underfill
>>744581034>I wouldn't say one random forum post's personal anecdote is definitive evidenceIt's more that I can point to it as an example of public perception being it running poorly. I'm not being serious about harping on this, it's just a quick example.>I don't know where you got 16 gamesI didn't do a proper count of it all so I just eyeballed it.>This is a pretty small and random selection of games out of the entire PS3 and 360 library. That's the point. It's just games from all over the place rather than notable ones to not really cherrypick anything. I just picked that link at random too since it offered decent comparisons.>But even in your own article it is stated how most of these are basically identical in performance.I know, my point is simply more that the PS3 versions were downgrades in various ways.>I'm not sure why you're so insistent on this other than wanting to get the last word in.If you consider what I mentioned negligible then I'm not going to argue against that point, it's more to show you that in even random slapped together lists like this the PS3 versions still came up with downsides because of it. You can argue they're negligible, you can argue they're not impactful, but regardless of this they are downgrades to the 360 versions. The Xbone itself was panned because it consistently ran games at 720-900p instead of the PS4's 1080p it's only fair to mention this as well because it matters even if 900p isn't that insanely bad from 1080p either.
>>744558694Because 360 was the only legit gaming system of the time so you just put up with it. I mean just look at the competition:>PS3Worst multiplats, multiplayer was also a subpar experience. >WiiGimmick console for grandmas and toddlers. Virtually no third party support.>PCEffectively a dead ecosystem with hackers running rampant and low quality ports.
>>744581437>I didn't do a proper count of it all so I just eyeballed it.You didn't check it before using it as an argument?>I know, my point is simply more that the PS3 versions were downgrades in various ways. But the article says there basically isn't any difference between both versions of those games>regardless of this they are downgrades to the 360 versionsI don't see how they're downgrades when they basically run the same. Or there are tradeoffs, in your own article one of the games on PS3 is mentioned to have slightly lesser resolution but also less screen tearing for exampleWe've moved pretty far from the original goalpost
>>744560974Rumble Roses XX
>>744582629>You didn't check it before using it as an argument?I skimmed it but you're right, lazy of me.>I don't see how they're downgrades when they basically run the same.Because running the same doesn't mean they're equal. Simple example is Assassin's Creed Unity. Xbone version was 900p, PS4 version was 1080p. They ran with the same framerates more or less especially when they capped it after the major patch, visually looked more or less the same, but the Xbone version was always considered the worse version because of the resolution loss because it is. Even if it's somewhat negligible to people that's an example of a downgrade because they want the most out of what they're playing.Again, I think we're getting too deep in the weeds here. You're right that it's ultimately negligible, but regardless if it's negligible or not there's still some aspect of it that tends to have a downside on the PS3 version even if, again, it's negligible.
