Is there a bigger meme psyop than Linux "gaming"?

I setup cachy the other day and I'm shocked at how well it worked. But it still just feels like a indie os slapped together with tape and hope maintained by a handful of people who could just up and abandon it at any moment. Same with any distro.
Think I'll just stick with what works and hope it doesn't get any worse.

As someone who dual booted for the last decade, I don't even have Windows installed anymore. It pretty much just does everything I want it to now. Not that you won't run into issues but it pretty much just works at this point

I don't even really care about gaming with Windows that much. Windows is just for Microsoft Word and shit like that.

I set up a CachyOS dual-boot on a whim and I haven't gone back to Windows ever since, I haven't run into any compatibility problems that would necessitate it. As soon as I get over being too lazy to wipe Windows I'll probably reclaim all that NVME space and be pure Linux.
>>
Works fine for me. Sometimes you might need to use the terminal then copy paste location of some windows exe then copy paste location of whatever file it might need to fuck with (if youre modding or romhacking). Use bottles one with wine and one with ge proton. I only need base wine with heavily modded games (ftl multiverse and fonv totww)

Long wall of text coming. This year I upgraded my PC and my windows 11 on my SSD was stuck on a glitch about the pin not being usable. Then I cleared out my OS and got me a new windows 11 download. Then last month at the beginning of July, after getting so fucking sick of the watermark at the bottom (even though I bought a key 2 fucking times) . I went to Bazzite.

So over a month I've been using Bazzite as my daily operating system and my fucking god. This is pretty fucking decent. I will admit there's some faults here , the biggest being shit relating to drivers. Especially for my corsair keyboard + headset. Which took a little while to fix up. But overall, this shit is probably better than windows 11.
The best example I can give is Total war warhammer 3. My campaigns and battles take SO much less time to load up compared to windows 11. I'm not really a PC expert so I don't know what the reason behind this. But overall from 20 seconds down to less than 8-10 seconds to load up my campaign.

My biggest fucking complaint about Linux is this. It's still not retard friendly. I'm not saying it's not friendly for avid PC gamers. But if you're talking about me grabbing some random fuck on the street and getting them to use Linux for a month , I can see them switching over to windows 11. The whole terminal thing is anxiety inducing for tech-illiterate people. That's my biggest concern about it. Also throw in the fact that there's a fuck ton of distros. It took me research to figure out Bazzite is probably my best distro.
If I were to grab my girlfriend and make her try to pick out a distro. I can see how she'll be a confused mother fucker on what is the best to play games and enjoy the daily PC experience. Besides the fact she is stupid, well the problem is MOST people are stupid.

Never forget KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid.

FF7 Rebirth, Elden Ring Nightreign, Mordhau (the "random weapon FFA" servers are pretty dead nowadays outside of one EU one unfortunately), Kingdom Hearts 1. Mostly waiting for Beastmaster to release in FFXIV (it's due next month) and then it's just waiting until Evercold releases. Other than that I've been mucking around in Prototype a bunch.
>>744565441
My Windows install is a lobotomized Windows 11 with a metric fuckton of at-installation scripts to neuter its ability to phone home and update itself, so I haven't run into the dual-boot being killed and don't expect it to do so. It's something I'm aware of though. If it *does* happen I'll know I need to get on erasing Windows pronto and I'm already over the new-user hurdle of Linux and can just set up a CachyOS installation again, annoying but doable.

>Professional software suites
Either run it in a VM or get a work computer. Why are you running professional software on your gaming station? And while I'm not saying that open source alternatives are entirely there yet, the output of companies like Autodesk and Adobe have been declining for decades now and they've been coasting on their ability to buy out the competition and shut down their services, whereas alternatives like Blender and FreeCAD have only improved with time.
>Games with anti-cheat
The last time any of these games were good was in 2012.
>Full hardware accessory compatibility
I like that Linux isn't just spaghetti code on top of NT, so it actually has decent support for USB devices and I don't need to download a driver to even run USB DAC.
>Fun customization like Wallpaper Engine
Linux has better customization. Why stick with boring portrait or landscape orientations for your display, when you can adjust your screen to any angle you want?
>Easy modding
Modding can be just as easy on Linux.
>Social features like Discord screen share to be reliable
You're using the wrong software for the job.
>Functioning audio 24/7/365
See aforementioned USB DAC, Linux audio just werks, no matter what you want it to do.

The AUR was never really safe to begin with but with all the gamers being recommended cachy it became a big attack vector as most of them just don't know about how it truely works. The AUR is not the official package manager. Its just where random users can throw up whatever they want, no different than hosting executable on Github. The official packages hosted with Pacman, on the other hand, are all verified by maintainers and are generally considered safe.
Though if you're really paranoid, you can always switch to Debian stable where packages are audited for months before being released.

I just remember that every time I tried to pirate games in the last 5 years linux versions of the games had latest updates and all of the DLCs, while windows ones lacked almost all post-release content (if they even existed).

>t. noobie Ubuntu user
.deb would be the standard debian/ubuntu executable. Most common filetype you'll see assuming you don't install things from picrel or APT (the terminal)
.rpm is the same but for Fedora Linux. I have never seen the filetype in my life because I don't use Fedora.
.pkg.tar refers to tarballs, which are pretty much just zip files with the application inside. Developers do the same thing on Windows (with .zip instead of tar) so I don't know what the big deal is. Also these can run on any distro and are pretty rare unless you're downloading niche software.
.appimage is the user friendly version of tarballs. One file, one click, then it just opens the app
.snap and .flatpak are both for very user friendly package managers. Honestly they're kind of the same as .deb, but snap does automatic updates. They can run on any distro. There's definitely a lot more nuance to it but that's my experience.
.[no extension] would just most executable files in tarballs. I think you can just click on them, or do ./filename in the terminal.

It's kind of just a result of decentralizing things. Most of the time you'll just download stuff from picrel, which shows all APT, snap, and flatpak packages. Linux haters always make it look a lot more complicated than it actually is, most of these filetypes you'll almost never use.

>>744568513
I mean the windows user humilation must continue, they're planning to remove all the legacy UI elements which is good on paper. In reality it just means a lot of third party apps are going to be depreciated and more resource heavy react code for the basic UI elements. Great times ahead.

You're living life on the edge anon. Migrate your steam library, there's an option for it in Steam itself. Then reformat ntfs to ext4 or btrfs. It's going to be a pain in the ass but it's better than having the drive suddenly get corrupted because linux isn't built for ntfs. ext4 is also a faster format than ntfs.
Or you can continue what you're doing since it works, it's your PC after all.

If I'm like 6 months in to not booting windows at all and wouldn't look back, I'll reformat the dedicated steam NVME. If it corrupts, I'll reformat anyway. The only reason to use Linux is to get away from the Devil (microsoft), but much like the real Devil windows actually has some good points and looks appealing and nice and tempting, because let's face it for all of it's faults it really does just work. So all Linux needs to do to win is "just work" the same as windows, but without all the bloatware and spyware and built in ads and all that other gay windows shit that Big Bill wants to shove up your ass and down your throat. Yet it's been over 30 fucking years and Linux's only success is working as a configurable system for corpos to use shit like point of sale (cash registers) systems on. Just make an OS that doesn't require a minor in compsci to use on a practical everyday basis, that can run video games, and doesnt spy on you. Thats literally all you have to do, but troonix creators are functionally retarded and huffing their own farts. Just because something is hard to use doesn't make it good. There's no reason a book needs a convoluted set of latches and locking mechanisms just to open so you can read it. It doesn't need to come with a separate manual describing the author's entire creative process. You don't need special training to thread miles of film on a spool into a projector to watch a movie at home.
You don't need to build a mechanical organ with a bunch of physically actuated, air powered instruments to play music on paper tapes.

Software is the only medium upon which some creators insist on reinforcing a bunch of needless technical obstacles as some sort of essential part of the experience.
It's like if cars still had manual cranks to turn the engine over and a manual spark timing control on the steering column because doing those things electromechanically is "cheating" or "taking control away from the operator."

This is the big reason. Every time I want to do something in Windows it fights me every step of the way.

For a while it kept replacing my video card drivers, but it also kept fucking them up in a way I had to clean install the drivers every time. Like it'd install them ON TOP OF my current drivers and cause constant crashes. In any sensible OS I could just tell it to stop or uncheck the drivers install during updates. NOPE Windows assumes you are a drooling retard and refuses to do it. I had to regedit those particular updates to disable them.

I mean this is true up to a point. Some automation is good and even desired. Windows just wants to do EVERYTHING for you. It's more like one of those meme self driving cars that will run through walls because it assumes it knows it's right.

Gaming is fine, but I don't understand why my phone can open certain .rar standard but Linux can't, you would think that this would be their highest priority but I've been using Linux for years and "open it on another device" is their only solution.
From non actually Linux issues I would like Steam to link the game's proton folder in compatibility tab so I can copy saves from windows games without wasting half an hour trying to find the right one, or at least give me its custom appID.

*Microsoft support.
Steam, Firefox, Nvidia and AMD still support W10 and you're not getting annoying Windows updates anymore. So, after 10 years W10 finally became a decent desktop OS for personal use. W11 will become ok to use once Microsoft drops support.

W10 is unironically better than W7.
You almost never get BSOD in Windows 10, it's much harder for a shitty app to crash the entire OS.
It's also required to have recent nvidia drivers if you're into AI prompting, and many vidya won't run on W7.

Lutris is good, it has a search function for installing games too and setting up configurations and can read steam library, gog etc. heroic is for epic games but you can quite easily get by with lutris. i dont look up the games i install for compat unless something goes a bit oddly. VOTV had issues reading files for the tv and radio, just needed a launch arguement. little things like that but its not too common.

Windows isn't that bad, at least not in comparison to mobile operating systems. (As much as I fear it won't be for long.) >>
>>744571358
Actual answer?
Linux works different under the hood. The company or group that mantains the distro choose how often the distro should update for whatever philosophical (autismo + practical) reasons. That's why you have rolling release distros that update everything almost daily, ones that update their core stuff every six months or so, and the ones that take several years called stable distros. So yeah, depends on you how do you like or need your updates in Linux. And compared against Windows, Linux updates usually improve stuff and don't fuck up your system randomly.
So yeah, is fine to not update Windows if everything still works, in Linux depends on your choosed distro
>>

Just adding on that lutris is genuinely the easiest thing ever. Whenever I download a game off a torrent website I just point lutris to the installer using the GUI and it sets it up perfectly. You get a faux-windows folder with program files and the game data all inside it so you may modify the game just like a Windows machine. It has worked for AAA games, indie titles, even h-games. If the torrent was for a very small indie game and its portable (like the game files are already extracted) theres even a button for that in the GUI. I have also had no issues with using unpackers like FitGirl.

the store reads the repository links that were included with your distrobution or added by yourself, the repos basically act as a warehouse of precompiled binaries targeted for your use. trust is a matter of the maintainers of the distro itself, its why people either opt for the more popular ones or go full autism and compile it themselves. Discover is kind of a crappy interface to deal with at the best of times unfortunately, its rather slow. I prefer synaptic package manager or just updating off the terminal.
