I actually started the game yesterday and played for an hour so far. I kinda like the gameplay, but it does feel lopsided - Souls combat doesn't seem necessary because it's a survival horror game where enemies exist to drain resources, and thus combat encounters are best avoided, so why bother with such an intricate combat system? Also, the counterattack seems very OP - it's easy to do, it does a ton of damage, and enemies don't have any response to it, so you're encouraged to disengage and wait for counterattack opportunities, which feels like it's gonna get old sooner rather than later.
The story seems to be about the protagonist's disenfranchisement and her general sense of being left out. She has no one - her encounters with the three she calls friends are all extremely awkward, and her family situation is obviously fucked. I suspect that the "traitor" part is something she hears in her head rather than something they're actually saying. Her design is also pretty interesting - a tomboyish girl in a black sailor suit with a rusted pipe as a weapon, it clearly evokes the sukeban stereotype which came to be in the 60s and lasted until the 80s. She wants to rebel against the tradition, but the physician's notes, clearly written from the writer's perspective, say that maybe things are not so clear-cut, which I suspect is the lesson of the story.

I never played any other game in the franchise, but I played pretty much every Resident Evil game under the sun, and most of them wouldn't qualify as pure survival horror either, especially something like Resident Evil 4. To me, the defining feature of survival horror is "the act of getting through this game feels like an achievement instead of a given". From that point of view, Souls games, where you're always battling the odds, are actually closer to survival horror than most RE games are. So I understand what the devs were going for.
