what's the dealbreaker(s) that makes you not want to play a game?
>>
Any game where it's possible to have a bricked save, as in no progress can be made because of your stats in an RPG for instance. Completely inexcusable and horrendous design.
>>
>>744565987
i feel bad for roguelike being a turnoff because it's objectively elite design, but something about the oversaturation of it puts me off.

Your art is still ugly.

The problem are very few of them actually make good use of the concept.
>bro here's a gorrillion randomized weapons and passives and items, too bad you'll very quickly gravitate towards a tiny section of the already rehashed arsenal and perk system because the rest is either boring 1% incremental stat boosts or pointless if you don't have the very obvious synergy for it that you just never end up rolling, use that INFINITE BUILD POTENTIAL™ to replay the same 6 or so maps, fighting the same 10 or so bosses and 20 or so enemies. Now do it again 90 more times with slightly incremental difficulty. Secret areas? Alternate routes? nah too much effort wait 5 years for the DLC/major update for us to add a single new biome that'll really spice things up

You never had these haughty, pretentious standards for new video games before you started browsing the internet too much, kid. What happened to you?
No, I'm not telling you to play gacha, but that's the only dealbreaker level thing there and even then you should be strong willed enough to avoid paying.

I'm so focused on wanting the protagonist's story to "belong to me" that I almost never play games that don't have either character creation or very ambiguous protagonists with no names and no backgrounds. The most common exception to this is story-heavy games where the protagonist's background and personality are a heavy driving force in the narrative, like Nine Sols.

Eh, it's fine to be selective, even arbitrarily. Gotta narrow that huge mass of games down to stuff you know is going to appeal to you and wildcards you're willing to give a chance. It's only an issue if you're so picky that you can't find a damn thing to play, and then go complain on /v/ - but that's just mental illness.

I don't have that many red flags I think. Pretty ezgoing when it comes to vidya. An unironic criterion that became a greenflag these days is a troon programmer unironically, for indie games. (not artist or writer)

Hitstop. No, making it look like my hardware is failing does not add "weight" to animations. Absolute immersion breaking garbage.
>>
Just spoke about this in another thread. But a game should be an entirely self contained experience. If I need to study a wiki or watch youtube content to even play it, then it's just not a very good game. I get game manuals aren't a thing anymore, but there's nothing stopping you from including an in-game manual if you can't just make a fucking tutorial like everyone else.
>>
>>744569630
What about games without crouching like SCP:SL? Is that a dealbreaker?

WHOA! Look out guys OP is coming in with the controversial hot takes. Are you really telling me that a game being boring is a deal breaker!? Nah this has to be bait. Surely you dont expect us to believe that anyone would hate boring games.

>roguelike
What I hate the most is everyone is obsessed with shittiest version of it but literally no one is trying to make anyhow grandscaled TBOI rip-offs.

The thing I want the most of the forsaken genre.

Also those are roguelites having actual progression system, no genuine roguelike really gets made ever nowdays..
I can't really remember any game that genuinely resets you to do the start and the only thing you have at your predisposition is knowledge of the game..

Playing a game because you like a character's looks is absolute nigger behavior
You don't need to play the game or "own" the character to be allowed to goon to collect their art. You can just right click download

the problem with roguelites is that few games are actually getting some truly uniquely good use of it. Games like TBOI, Noita, balatro, etc are great roguelikes because they actually specifically match this genre. They have qualities that couldnt have done in another genre.
Now look at 99% of roguelikes. They are literally only roguelikes because it was cheaper to produce and they cant afford to make a real fleshed out balanced campaign, which would have been directly more fun to play. Either that or because their game is basically shallow and content-less like a VS clone.
>metaprogression
i dont care about that part honestly. it doesnt inherently make the game more fun or less fun, it completely depends on how its executed. Coincidentally these games i mentioned dont have metaprogression, but i do think Hades is a reasonably "roguelite-only" game that has metaprogression, even if its closer to being another genre
>>
>>744565987
the fuck is speedrunslop?
>>
If a game looks middling/dubious, the worst dealbreaker for me is a shitty generic UI. Its a guaranteed tell that the game will be kind of uninspired, shabby, soulless and probably be clunky/janky in the controls in more ways than it seems at a first glance.
Overwhelming majority of genuinely great games have some cool UI that matches the style of the game. If a fantasy game has the most boring modern diamonds UI with neutral white colors, then thats a monumental red flag

play nightreign (with friends or randoms)
recently ive discovered post-fatigue rollslop is infinitely more fun and engaging when playing with friends. Even shittier ripoffs become bearable. However nightreign is literally the peak game for coop soulslop and is filled with unfiltered kino

FOMOshit like timed events aggravate the hell out of me, it’s so flagrantly manipulative that it makes me wanna snub the entire game altogether.

This

Was playing Ascend to Zero which while fun has the same problems.
>Each Avatar tunnelvisions on a specfic weapon type
>You only get 1 main passive key to them or 2 passives from other avatars. Of which only a few per class are game defining. All the passives after wildly niche for specific archetypes. Combined with a rarity scaling system meaning you are often just rerolling to see your highest value rolls and picking the generic options that give best stats.
>Progression is disgaea-esque infinite upgradu stattu eastism with 6 ascensions
>Due to this and setbonuses you arnt likely to change build mid sessions and at best try to farm a preset for each class
>No secret areas, story is just serviceable timeloop plot.
>Roadmap might improve the build choices but you wished it was from the release

Actually making enough content for a good roguelite takes 5 years to a decade minimun.
People expect isaac afterbirth to be the norm
>>
Rape
>>
>>744580154
I get that Isaac is the norm and it had practically a decade to get where it is but it feels like so many developers miss the point of the randomization aspect. If you make your itemization with the intent of making very clear, obvious outlined synergies in defined roles and then said items becoming useless outside of that role/context then you've failed because fuck you if I want to play reroll perks simulator until I get the run that lets me stack all the flame damage buffs that makes my flamethrower worth a shit.
This then goes double for characters, oh boy the melee character can use melee. MASAKA, BAKANA, too bad I can't experiment any further than that when all it means is that I'm incentivized to use melee during that run because it's less shit and not because my build suddenly syngergized in some way to make my melee attacks deal shockwave damage and that shockwave damage dealing poison dot and that poison dot procing electricity and the electricity being able to bounce on me giving me extra move speed which then gives me more damage which finally translates to extra damage on the previous effects.
Finally there's that shit idea of meta/permanent incremental upgrade system which has always and will always suck shit. Tee hee we balanced your first run in a way where you deal unreasonably low damage and everyone deals unreasonably high damage for how little health you have and the health restoration mechanism of the game is locked until you fail a couple of times and spend points to finally get some way of healing yourself, isn't this amazing progression? Fucking unlock something cool for god's sake.

Like I dunno despite being weaker gameplaywise I thought Gunfire Reborn and Path of Achra felt like they nailed the roguelite aspect a lot better than something I genuinely enjoyed the gameplay of like say Invisible Inc, Pathogenic or Roboquest.
