I wish Pokemon was a little more involved with it's gameplay. They made the switch to 3D with very little to actually justify it beyond "it's 3D now." Could you imagine a fully realized Pokemon game that knew it's limits and stuck to what would be easiest to build from instead of half-assed "baby's first landsculpt in blender."

Headcanon refers to things not stated canonically. What you're mad about isn't headcanons, it's just changes. Which makes it odd that you're trying to consider romhacks at all.
>nu-pokemon is dragon type moves all being physical and not all being special
They could've back ported the physical/special split if the goal was to "update" it you mongoloid.
>they're not called swarms in game!!!
No, they're called swarms in occasional strategy guides and by most community resources though, because "mass outbreak Pokemon" is an unwieldy phrase in comparison to "swarming Pokemon". Just like how they never technically call the starters that and instead use "first partner Pokemon".

by headcanon i dont literally mean "my fanfic about what happened in the story" i just mean personal changes suited to ones taste, which i basically what id do anyway by replacing HMs so whatever. still dont get the whole split thing or what goes on under the hood but, because im still learning crystal, i dont want stats to change or some nupokemonfag putting their later gen changes in. i just never liked HMs thats it, thats all id change, and id like a different player sprite, maybe more house customisation
>>
>>744566220
The actual answer is that they copy-pasted tiles in order to save space.
>>
>>744589060
Gen2 will forever remain in my heart as THE best gen. I still remember excitation and little insecurity as I explored the world in game. When I shared what I found with other boys at school. When I carried the game and emulator on floppy disk to play at grandfather PC during summer break. When I actually played it, sitting in dim light, on makeshift desk, at the celling "room", with rain outside and glass of homemade grape juice.

I played other games after that but none of them would match Gold and Crystal.
>>
>>744588918
Monster Crown is a terrible game attempting to get a free ride off Gen I & II Pokemon aesthetics. I think the second game literally got the person who made that image to do pixel art but it can't cover for bad gameplay and the frankly pathetic "dark" writing.

>>
>>744589305
Personal changes suited to one's taste isn't at all related to the term "headcanon" if those changes are on a gameplay level.
>still dont get the whole split thing or what goes on under the hood
In gens 1-3, every type is hard stuck as either physical or special. So say, fire, electric, and ice were all special types to begin with, so fire punch, thunderpunch and ice punch are better used by Alakazam than Hitmonchan and basically function as lesser versions of flamethrower, thunderbolt, and ice beam. Until Gen 4, where they became physical moves, and actually set themselves apart.
If you don't know enough about your Pokemon's stats to understand how whether a move is physical or special affects it, how can you even tell the stats are different from vanilla?
>i just never liked HMs thats it, thats all id change, and id like a different player sprite, maybe more house customisation
And there's someone out there for whom all of this would be intolerable and all of the changes this hack makes are fine.
Also, for completeness, lore on the term "swarm": the community term likely became "swarm" because most people started talking about them in the Gen where they're called "swarms of Pokemon" in-game as you're being notified of them, Gen 4. Most people started talking about them in Gen 4 because that's when the mechanic was expanded from basically being a cute bonus way to get a couple Pokemon you've already got to being your main way to catch a bunch of natdex Pokemon.

Gen 3 is my favorite too anon but no. The lack of a day/night cycle and well animated sprites despite being on a new handheld was such a disappointment. Ruby, Sapphire and FRLG didn't have the animated sprites at all, and when they finally came back in Emerald they looked like shit compared to the old Crystal ones. They didn't even bother making the new games compatible with gen 2 despite it being possible to do.
>>
>>744592308
>thirdie infested grindfest with restrictions for the sake of le economy and a cash shop that give you in-game benefits
No, it doesn't count. The regions aren't even connected seamlessly, you just take a boat and load up another rom for whatever region you're in. You might as well just play the actual games and avoid all the lame and gay restrictions the devs put in.
>>
>>744592493
The level curve DOES briefly stall out for a period of the game where the player generally wants to get stronger. Chuck, Pryce, Jasmine, and the final Rocket Executives at the Radio Tower all hover within 10 levels of one another. This is the portion of the game where you're set free and allowed to do a few things in whatever order you like, mirroring the stretch of Gen 1 after you get through Rock Tunnel. But gen 1 still had this period span over like 20 levels, because they knew you'd want to be around level 50+ for the pokemon league.

I thought pokemmo used the actual ROMs to provide the regions. To me that implied you were just sort of maybe traveling by boat or plane or something with a cutscene and a selector, rather than actually connecting them. Does it also include original areas linking the regions together?

Day and Night mechanics are so cool but playing these games as an adult (inb4 >playing pokemon as an adult) is frustrating because I literally can only play them at night after getting home from work. Yeah you could fudge the clock but then you get the opposite problem where you can only play during the day.
>>
>>744594894
I don't know if they fully made the switch, but I recall discussions about Polished Crystal dropping the real time clock to have access to officially larger ROM sizes. They replaced it with steps moving time forward or something.
>>
You'll notice people bitching about shit like real-time day/night cycles and daily events just want to check off a box and call it good. These games were meant to be fucking PLAYED. You messed around when you could, found Pokemon, discovered shit, etc. Even shit like headbutt trees and swarms were made to make everyone's experience a little different. These are things you'd find and tell people about at school or whatever

When you give yourself a checklist and analyze the mechanics of the game and the code for how everything works, of course you're gonna bitch that it's "tedious". Because you're just going through to say you did it instead of simply playing it.

>>744595330
New locations that fit the world or expanding on existing locations is neat. Stat/movepool changes can be okay. Physical/special split isn't necessary. Backporting every new mon and typing overhauls for a lot of them is a bit much.

Basically, I feel like if you can't take your team into Stadium 1/2 and play within the normal confines of those games, then you're not really playing "gen 1" or "gen 2" anymore. Again, not necessarily a bad thing. I just think the name Polished Crystal is pretty fucking disingenuous at this point when the scope is far greater. It's basically a "Modern Crystal".

>>744595580
I get the appeal and it's fine sometimes, but in general I don't get the obsession with porting literally everything possible from subsequent gens. If you don't enjoy the mechanics of gen 1-3, why the fuck are you even playing them?
>>
>>744595580
For me it's a negative.
I like playing without the split sometimes. It had some sideffects so it's nice to play without it sometimes.
No split with Dark being a physical type would be ideal.
>>
>>744595580

Physical moves use a Pokemon's attack and defense stats. Special moves use a Pokémon's special attack and defense stats.
Before Gen 4, a move got whether it was physical or special from its type. So every fire type move was special, and any Pokemon using any fire type move was thus rolling off its special attack. This means that certain combinations of type and stat are kind of inherently incongruous.
Gen 4 made it selected per move, so the elemental punches could finally be useful on fighting type Pokemon.

Funny enough, we actually seem to agree here. Is backporting mons and types and moves to such a wild extent really that common in any romhack that doesn't aim to completely keep move pools and such the same?
Also, I like the phys/special split, I don't "need" it, I just like to see it in these older games because I like to have the flexibility it offers along with some of the mechanical specifics of these older gens.
>Basically, I feel like if you can't take your team into Stadium 1/2 and play within the normal confines of those games, then you're not really playing "gen 1" or "gen 2" anymore
So... you aren't actually fine with stat or movepool changes then? Or at least, you consider them not to fit within gen 2 at all?
>>
>>744595580
I don't like by how much the phys/special split increased the damage dealt in the game, the modern games are one-shot fests.
Granted, it's not just the fault of the split, it's also Gamefreak being too generous with their movepools.

Physical/special split is fine and there's a reason they eventually implemented in the mainline games, and it does add a lot more ways to play and use Pokemon and strats you normally wouldn't. I think in general it feels like, at least with Pokemon romhacks, that EVERYONE wants to just add everything they can. It's great to have that ability and freedom, but it's also tiring. If I "just" want to play gen 1-3 with a little more, I basically have to sift through a changelog to see how much shit they added on top. Plus a lot of major romhacks that get popular and gain traction are probably going to be ones that add a fuckton.

>>744598976
>So... you aren't actually fine with stat or movepool changes then? Or at least, you consider them not to fit within gen 2 at all?
Probably kind of limiting, but I've always felt like the Stadium games were essential to the experience of gen 1-2. I guess as long as stat/movepool changes don't go overboard then the "spirit" of those gens is still there.

>>744599732
Yeah, I think if they had re-evaluated movesets a little bit along with the addition of the split, it would've been pretty much perfect. Think of old Pokemon holding pre-split era learnsets with occasional freak shit as a sporadic advantage against the more specialized design of those to come. There's still shades of this, a lot of old learnsets look bizarre compared to modern contemporaries... but they've officially had to pare back available moves for two gens now and the game is still ridden with instant death.
>>
>>744598514
in gen 1 flareon ws abject trash necause it was a fire (then a special-only type) mon with high attack and low special. now flareon is decent because there are physical fire moves it can use with its high physical attack stat

I guess I kind of take those "gen whatever but a little more" hacks for granted. I hadn't really checked them out for awhile, only full on "redone game" patches, and it always felt like there was a slightly inconsistent selection of stuff people borrowed from future games, so this sort of crept up on me. I think I know what you mean, though.
>I've always felt like the Stadium games were essential to the experience of gen 1-2. I guess as long as stat/movepool changes don't go overboard then the "spirit" of those gens is still there.
I'll be honest, I was really expecting someone to make a modified stadium/2 as a companion to their gen 1/2 romhack at some point. Has that never happened? We can decompile N64 games, I would figure Pokemon would be way up on the priority list.

People who hate on HMs are fucking idiots who completely miss so much of the charm of the series, just like modern gamefreak
I WANT it to feel like I'm on an adventure with my bros, and they're actually helping me out.
If anything Pokemon needs MORE HMs. Or really, HM equivalents. Make them some sort of tutor you, the player character, visit to learn how to make the most of your Pokemon without the HMs taking up moveslots. And then add way more ways to interact with the environment. You don't get an item finder, you need to learn how to use your Pokemon to find stuff, through smell, psychic powers, whatever.
Add in camping elements and make routes way bigger and more complex. No straight shot routes you walk through once and never go back to, as you become a better trainer each route essentially opens up through the ways your Pokemon (NOT YOUR KEY ITEMS) helps you explore it.

Abstraction. HP and restoring it is an abstraction. If she were just a clerk pressing a button, that would imply HP was an actual force in the world that the machine directly restored. Because she's a nurse, we know HP is just an abstract representation of a Pokémon's health and its restoration might be instant on screen in the games, but can in truth involve real normal medicine.

This is a bs argument, because you cant be too busy to not find some time during the week to play pokemon roms during daylight hours after all you post here nigga and because you dont arse yourself to change the in game clock and play it the way you want to. Besides, the game progress is not tied to day/night cycle. Only some Pokemon and some side quest stuff.
Its also bs because Gayfreak brought the day/night cycle back for DS pokemon games, which means that people actually love it.
In any case, good romhacks like Perfect Crystal lets you easily change the in game clock with a button combo in the start screen, so there is no excuse.
Like it or not, Gen 2 pokemon games have the most SOVL the Pokemon games ever had, and its a slow dowhill beyond that point

I like the general vibes but honestly feel like the pokemon off the side are kinda offputting.
Perhaps because i associate pokemon on the overworld being portrayed with a general sprite, rather than a proper, full fledged one.

I guess one reason is size, for example the Honchkrow below the burned tower appears to be of similiar as the Arcanine or Entai.
With a general sprite, you can handwave that aside, but a proper sprite makes it difficult to get the size difference across.

>>
>>744607305
I think Palworld poses a few interesting ideas but people got attached to the deliberately inflammatory and eye catching parts and not the interesting ones.
I want a game where I can go outside the current guardrails on how the trainer interacts with Pokemon.
I want a game where I use them to more directly get around. No, I do not want to automatically summon special Pokemon that don't belong to me whenever I touch the terrain I need to use them to cross. I want to USE the Pokemon that I CAUGHT to deal with a PROBLEM in the WORLD.
I want a game that doesn't feel the need to be written for three year olds just because it's not rated M.
Palworld put us in a universe where this game might come about, but Palworld itself is very much not what I'm looking for either.

I don't like the "visual greebling" these pixelartists do on objects that should have simple colors, like the fucking MOON

>>
>>744613330
That's called dithering. It's a real technique that was everywhere in more detailed older pixel art, usually the type meant to be a mostly still spectacle shot rather than moving game pieces. It's used to soften the edges of solid color blocks and create better lighting and texture. The moon isn't simple, it's got a bunch of craters and stuff.

Other anon explained it retardedly. Before the change, certain element moves were always considered either a special attack or a physical attack. With the split, now only certain moves can be special or physical. So you can have both a special fire attack(Flamethrower) and a physical fire attack(Fire Punch).

This would also split the stats into

>Attack
>Defense
>Special Attack
>Special Defense

Kind of like how most rpgs have Attack+Defense and Magic Attack+Magic Defense. Some pokemon are just built for physical only moves while others are built for special moves. Looking back it never really made sense to merge them like this but I never really looked back into the older mechanics.

Pointless waste of time. RNG calls also cockblocked you from finding evo stones when they were buyable in gen 1. Not to mention gen 2 gave you a bunch of stone evo Pokemon when the easiest way to get stones was in fucking Kanto.

It also killed your internal battery, which wipes your save. Imagine having that happen in a gen 3 game.
>>
>>744633067
I love a good win-win situation.
>>
>>744633463
It does happen in RSE. It's just not tied to your save.
>>
>>744633523
now think about this. what happens if in GSC the battery dies but the save is still intact? does it default to day only? what happens to the morning and night-only encounters?
>>
>>744633638
Pretty sure the battery powers both, so the game won't save anymore. RBY has the same problem, but it's not as bad since it's not also powering a real-time clock.

The GBA games use a type of flash memory for the saves, so when the RTC dies, the saving still works.
>>
>>744633737
you're missing the point
>>
>>744633638
Gen 3 was when they wanted to make the games last, so I don't blame them for omitting features that would've otherwise made stuff unobtainable.
>>
>>744633771
Like if the battery drained while playing or something? GSC doesn't update graphics for the time of day or anything until you enter a new area or building, so I guess in a sense you'd probably be "stuck" at whatever daypart you were in. Unless the game continues to update the clock based on whatever it last was. You'd still lose everything once you reset or power off though

*Real time* day/night cycle was a huge mistake. These games aren't very long if you know what you're doing. It doesn't feel right leaving your home in the morning and reaching the E4 in the afternoon on the same day. Or if you're like most kids and only played during the night, what kid only goes on an adventure during the night?

IMO one full day in-game should be like 90 minutes.

I have like 30+ hours on my Silver cart that I've just been playing off and on during downtime at work or at home. All I did was maintain a main team of six, play through the game, go out of my way to catch some pokemon I've missed, raise up some other mons, breed a little, whatever. I haven't even caught everything I can yet. I still haven't even fucking caught the box legendaries or the beasts even. I still want to trade over some exclusives from the person playing Crystal with me, everything we have from Red and Blue, and I plan on eventually finishing some teams that I want to take with me to tackle Stadium 2.

I'm not saying GSC or Johto are fucking perfect, but there's shit to do if you actually play the game and not over-analyze every single detail and mechanic. When you go into it just trying to check off boxes, worrying about which pokemon are the best and their encounter rate, fucking with the clock or whatever to get THIS pokemon or THIS event or whatever because you want it RIGHT NOW, obviously you're gonna have a bad fucking time. I wish there was a yume nikki / pokemon hybrid romhack/project. Specially in the graphic style of 2kki's Wataru maps.

Dreamworld setting with nature, abandoned cities and civilizations, abstract spaces, rusted machinery etc. No towns other than the starting area, need your pokebros to survive out there. Scavenging items, camping in safe areas, ambushes, non battle hazards.
YN effects as HMs that make your pokemon help you navigate the incomprehensible landscape. Vending machines serving as the PCs.
Though pokemon needs a lot of trainers for the gameplay to make sense, and abundance of people doesn't fit the setting. Maybe small groups of pokemon instead of trainers.

The problem to me i think is that its just too cramped, it looks cool but you can never imagine actually playing a game like this. It has to be on a larger scale. I think people calling it overdesigned are fucking retarded and just parroting each other; this would be glazed endlessly if it was a megaman-esque low poly 3d game with the same aesthetic and texturing. Midwits playing at critique when they dont have the capacity for it, like people who 'improve' comics by cutting out all the supposedly extraneous dialogue and pacing because they read "brevity is the soul of wit" somewhere
>>
>>744591445
It's from an artist collab showcase; no shit it's eye-grabbing and "over-designed".
>>
>>744568759
I think the problem with this is determining how it's meant to be played
If you see the whole picture it looks amazing, but if it was an actual pokemon game where you only see a tiny patch of terrain at a time instead of the whole city then yes it might feel like it needs more clarity and there's too much stuff on screen

>>744647362
Any sprite based console has a limit on how many individual sprites can exist at once. The image implies too many moving parts. Background tiles also have limits that aren't being respected here but that's more of a cartridge space concern.
>>
>>744647476
is that also a problem when making a romhack meant to run on more advanced hardware? or is it something like hardcoded in the base game or something
>>
>>744568357
Me on the left: Ugly bastard staking out the middle of a route between cities with an over levelled team to challenge exclusively JK trainers and makes them pay with the bodies when they lose.
>>
>>744648117
The console is still only built to manage X sprites at a time. It might have better hardware if you're running an emulator, but the engine of every game that's ever been made for it is built on the assumption of a certain number of sprites, its code only manages that number of sprites, and many parts of the game are already designed and optimized around it.
In theory, I can imagine a modern developer pushing that limit with a game built from scratch intended only to run on emulators, but in practice, that's probably not gonna happen, especially not as the basis for a Pokemon romhack.

I think you just have specific taste in pixel art. That's fine. A lot of people do without realizing it. I'm very used to "noisy" pixel art, to the point that I find the way Pokemon itself looks overly simple and symbolic. It has benefits, this simple art is the reason romhacks can be made as readily as they are, but it's not the objective best way for the games to look.

I think I know the concept you're talking about but I'm not sure if it has a convenient name either. "Framing" maybe? I agree that a well done grid of standard tiles can be plenty detailed and visually interesting, I just think Pokemon leans on the simple side for the design of those tiles even long after the hardware limitations justified it. Gen 3 looks WAY simpler than almost any comparable GBA game. Not to say it should look like Minish Cap or something, but it definitely could've been more detailed.

Thanks for sharing. I get the "too busy" complaint in some areas, but a lot of them look pretty good.
>>

The people at Gamefreak seem barely competent at making games. You'd think Nintendo would whip them into shape considering Pokemon's popularity
>>
>>744679404
They can't, Gamefreak has an equal share in the property.
>>
>>744641159
Might be, battle screen always has white background so they can just use it as the sprite transparency color too. I can't remember if transparency can be in addition to the three colors or if it is one of them.

Gross.

I really like the style on route 4. Almost has the prerendered SNES game look.
>>
>>744684395
Directly better. Pokemon was one of the only phenomena to reach the size it did, if it had stuck the landing it would have had a dramatic impact on global morale.

>i dont think its ever refered to as a swarm ingame
gsc trainers literally called you on the phone to tell you on the phone to tell you a swarm was happening you fucking teenager
>>
>>744688094

>>
>>744688094
Don't forget that by Gen 4, where it became a real fucking mechanic behind which mons you might want to use and otherwise not be able to were locked, EVERY notification came with the term "swarm". All of them.
>>
Why do zooms and alpha babies hate Gold & Silver so much?
>>
>>744688418
you got btfo they dont call it a swarm. "hey these pokemon are swarming" isnt the same as "hey we time travelled and are referring to it as a swarm like little retards in the future will" ands its official name is mass outbreak so go piss your pants kek
>>
>>744568759
Vaporeon.....
>>
>>744688660
Does anyone in their right mind really hate gold and silver? At most I hear people moderately overblow their gameplay faults.
>>

Pinsir is cool.

sharteens are obsessed with /vp/ and pokemon so all the fan favorites need a way to be torn down to fish for as much butthurt as possible

You might be remembering a random isolated nature shot of them from one of the movies or shorts, actually? I have a similar mental image that I can't place. Bulbapedia usually covers this pretty exhaustively, but none of the appearances they list seem quite right.
>>
>>744692128
found it, johto journeys - going apricorn. ah yeah its where team rocket are trying to steal apricorns and ill bet the pineco drop down an explode them
