Critics raved about Bioshock Infinite when it came out but people tend to think that it's mediocre to bad now.

That's because Bioshock Infinite is the length of Silent Hill 2, but without the replay value. If it had the same number of endings as SH2, it would be remembered fondly instead of forgotten, except as something that could have been good.
SH2 got a remake, but you won't see one for Bioshock Infinite, because the game wasn't good enough to become a cult classic.
They're really similar games, because they're both interesting locales, and you travel with a woman in both games.

It's such a strangely shallow game. Both the writing and the gameplay feels barely considered or like they were led horribly behind the scenes and wasted all their dev time on bad ideas so then it got rushed right at the end.

I don't think it's "strangely" shallow. Infinite feels like the bare minimum for a game. Like, they met all the targets, and nothing extra was done.
There were other games exactly like it around the same time - Dragon Age 2, for example.
I'm actually glad that people don't accept those kinds of games anymore. Thanks to companies like Larian Studios and CDPR, people don't accept half-finished games anymore.

it was successfully astroturfed. people who were around for the 2010-2013 marketing loved it. people who played it later just saw it for what it was.

What did they see exactly? Because the later people love games like pic related, which Bioshock Infinite undoubtedly paved the way for. The only difference between Infinite and BG3 is the latter is a complete game instead of a cash grab.

When I played Bioshock Infinite at release, I thought it was amazing. It had everything you wanted in a video game.
>you play a guy
>he sounds cool
>he has a gun
>you meet your waifu
>the world looks strange, and you're excited to explore it

That means the only problem the game had was lack of content. It was like watching a movie, but people expect more from a game.
I won't have anyone talking shit about Bioshock Infinite unless they can name a modern release of the same quality.
