The real appeal of early-mid 00s graphics is their readability. Everything is crisp, clean, understandable, with minimal visual clutter, allowing gameplay and art direction to shine.

Yeah, which is exactly why they won't happen because you have to have a good artistic vision and actually know what you're doing to pull them off. Notice how every single "game" aping PS1 aesthetics looks like shit and looks nothing like an actual PS1 game because the faggot zoomers making those don't have the skill and don't know how these games really looked like because they've never even seen a PS1 IRL. "It's all a vibe" to them and that's it.

Sorry. Boomer shooters are very "arcade-y" shooters, all are set in some kind of unrealistic setting, with monsters, crazy weapons, nonsensical levels architecture, healthkits and other bonuses just casually scattered around the map. No attempt at realism.
The genre basically ended once Half-Life 1 got released, until the Dusk "revived" the genre. Even if it's quite different now, it still basically never tries to be realistic.
The shooters posted here don't have any "umbrella" term to describe them. Until someone comes up with another quirky chungus title. Like Fortunate-like or Draft Slop or something.

The genre is not that interesting to be honest desu. It's quite literally the realism slop, boring modern-ish realistic setting, generic modern weapons, boring humanoid enemies, super retarded super boring badly designed boss fights with boring humanoids except extra bullet-spongy.
The only good things about these games are crystal clear crisp graphics and cool interesting set pieces, and if the first part is easy to reproduce, the second requires an actual talent, and we all know how "talented" the indie devs are, considering none of the so called boomer shooters came close to surpassing Doom or Quake or Duke.
And without cool levels set in exotic locations, or just well designed encounters, there's basically nothing this sub-genre has to offer imo.

you must be blind because that's firm early 2000s nostalgic shooter to me. Probably 2004. Bloom doesn't disqualify it, it has a fucking heath and armor bar, PS3 era shooters were by and large all regenerating health bullshit with few exceptions.

The most boring dogshit imaginable? Yeah, it would be really a great game.
>>
>>744580349
We kinda just forgot how to do it.

Joking aside, that's actually what it is. Or rather, all these new fucks don't know how or they don't peruse it. Things like that are just programming and have been capable for years. Graphics were a lot more simple back then so they put their programing efforts into doing cool gameplay shit. Perfect Dark comes to mind. Now all that coding effort is going towards visuals. Constant talks about this shader that shader, ambient occlusion, Paralax, Deferred rendering, particle systems, global illumination, raytracing, blah blah blah. Gone are the simple light-mapped based maps. Now all that focus is on trying to make it look better than the competitor.

Though to give credit that stuff is harder to do the higher poly and detail you go. A couple of simple gibs is easier to make look good in an old game than the high fidelity shit you see today. The effort on everything goes up exponentially so they don't bother.

Modern CPUs wouldn't be able to handle it. There's no point in having GPUs capable of rendering a bunch of sophisticated effects when, in the end, it's the CPU that has to handle NPCs and things like that.

The problem is there are no modern engines that recreate those vibes. Unity is unoptimized slop for jeets and unreal engine is too modern.

You would have to build an engine from scratch and copy their exact rendering code to get the same feel as early 2000s FPS

My biggest problem with Soldier of Fortune is medium difficulty is literally journalist mode. You can stand in front of enemies and they cant hit you. Then you tick it up to hard mode and suddenly every enemy has instant hitscan 1 shot death guns.

SoF 1 and 2 didnt age well. They were all about the multiplayer anyways.

idtech 3 (quake 3 engine) is open source. there's no excuse.

Where do you even learn to make stuff for Quake 3 engine of all things? Quake 1 has a lot of mods but almost nothing for Quake 3.

Isn't that literally just gamemaker but with extra tranny community? What the fuck has even been made for Godot?

I loved playing delta force as a 4 or 5 year old and not understanding anything because I didn't bother reading the mission brief but just roaming around the map and figuring out all the controls on my own

In SoF2, hardest diff is fine once you realise leaning and single-fire mode are OP.

It's ludicrous how modern games can still skimp on shadows if they aren't deemed important enough. Riddick goes to show how important self-shadowing is under all circumstances.

tbf though the baked lighting is a lot harder to do in UE5 than in previous versions. It was obviously an afterthought given all the shit they put into lumen

I hate that you're right about this but it's true.
UE3, while it still had some pretty impressive and fun games, was the beginning of the great decline.

That's great and all... but we're talking about aesthetics here and how visually simple it is to see things. I will never ever care, about some random anon claiming I like something for nostalgia sake anyway. Go post somewhere else.
>>
>>744620380
I did. It's a mid game, with an interesting, yet half baked concept. And a sequel hook with no sequel

I don't get nostalgiafags. Literally the only way to be nostalgic for a game is if:
>A). You currently do not own the game and want to have it or play it (you can)
>B). You currently own the game and do not want play it (why not, i mean if nostalgia = thing you're *dying* to play)
>C). You played it to death and want more novelty (thus meaning nostalgia is obsoleted by... novelty = new games, thousands of games you are refusing to play)
>D). Your headcanon for what the game is *meant to be* is not in the market (i.e. not only does the game not exist, it has not ever existed and cannot exist unless some external force specifically makes [game in anon's mind])
>E). Your emotions have absolutely nothing to do with the game at all (nostalgic game = rosebud/ratatouille) and thus no future game will ever provide sufficient sentimental value beyond "sparking the memory of" [anon's game]

it's a toxic mindset that results in shitty remakes in both indie and AAA space. keel over and let people do something else in gamedev.

>>744609237
