When did Magic the Gathering peak and when did the decline begin?
>>744569510Was good until they added planeswalkers. The players used to be the planeswalkers casting spells.
>>744569615this is validi feel like the next step of degradation was mtg arena and the next one was putting other franchises into magic like lotr etc.
>>744569510It peaked and died with the Final Fantasy Universe Beyond set a year ago
>>744570285>It peaked and died with the Final Fantasy Universe Beyond set a year agoWhat was so good about it?
>>744570582The art and lore consistency, it was really good and Squaresoft was monitoring all of it for 5 years before releasing the set. Something that to this day has not been repeated.
>>7445695102015/16 with the removal of three set blocks, introduction of gatewatch, introduction of masterpieces, openly saying extended can get fucked (Eldrazi Winter), not balancing for even standard for that matter with fetchable duals in the same environment, and explosion of commander popularity. Most things wrong with the game can come back to here.
>>744569510>peakShandalar>declinewhen the woke era began and they started doing stupid collabs like FF or Marvel crap.sometime around 2014-2015
>>744570875Fantastic Four and Marvel started on 2025-2026
>>744569615This part. Magic turned to shit around 07-08. Planeswalkers, Mythic Rares, printing new cards in core sets, getting rid of mana burn and simplifying combat was enough to get to me to quit and never want to go back with how shit and money grabby the game has become.
>>744569510it was never good.
>>744569510it's FIRE design what killed mtg>>744569714>mtg arenaarena had a very good design, best one by far. wizards still took forever to fix bugs, but arena itself wasn't the issue
>>744569510For me peak Magic is Scars to RTR. Oath of the Gatewatch was the beginning of the end. I just finished an Modern Frame (8th-Theros) cube and it's so much fun.
>>744569510Is there any good single player TCG? Like a game where you unlock new cards or booster packs by playing the AI, no multiplayer, no microtransactions required?Specifically similar to MTG, I don't mean the new wave of garbage indie roguelite card games.
>>744569510Peaked at Fifth Dawn, died at Fifth Dawn. All hail our saviour Skullclamp.Artifact sets are the bane and boon of Magic. They fucked up when they balanced it by giving them colored costs.
>>744575067Yes, it's called Build Your Own Cube
>>744575067some old gameboy yugiohs probably, but can't say which one is the best
>>744575067The new palworld tcg
>>744569615>when they added planeswalkersthis was the OG lorwyn block, which was the last block that i enjoyedthe planeswalker cards were gay, but there were only 5 of them at the time
>>744575279It was also the last block without mythic rares. Which ruined the cost of the game.
2001
>>744575517Based premodern player.
>>744569510>peakRavnica 2005>declineIt all began with Innistrad 2011
>>744576828>Innistrad 2011This is the answer
>>744569510>declinebut its never been more popular. you can't even get collector booster preorders anymore they sell out so fast
>>744569714>>744573815I can't believe how hard they fumbled with Arena>didn't initially release on steam>doesn't have all the cards>some brand new card releases don't even make it into the game>bullshit hearthstone rng cards exclusive to arena>horrendous microtransactions. 99% of the store isn't worth touching even for whales>can't craft cards like every other digital tcg>no 4 player commander, the most popular format>no duel commander, just a bastardized version with brawl>no pauper unless a rare event is up for it>no modern>no legacy>no format that anyone actually cares aboutSomehow the ancient dogshit MTG Online client is somehow still better than Arena.
>>744575067I didn’t know what MtG was like two months ago but I picked up CardForge and started playing the Adventure mode and holy fuck is it awesome, it’s basically a single player MtG RPG where you start with a basic deck and grind enemies/dungeons to get better cards, I highly recommend it. Picrel is the battle UIhttps://github.com/Card-Forge/forge
Goblins are back, baby
>>744569510>When did Magic the Gathering peakSometime about legends in the mid 1990's. /v/ might look at the microprose game. An impressive technical feat for it's time.Decline started shortly after 2000, when Hasbro took over and started making demands. They lost focus by buying and sort of fucking up D+D, making pokemon cards, buying and closing retail stores, loading up on retarded biz school emploiyees. Place when Peter Adkison leaves the company.>>744575067Some of the DS era yu gi oh games were good. Dual screen worked well with the format. >>744579340Just 6/6?
>peakOG Ravnica>start of declineDragons of Tarkir onwardsfirst strike - Gatewatch, marvel tier story and quips instead of meaningful flavoursecond strike - FIRE designthird strike, you're out of my life - shitty fortnite collabs
>>744579340
>>744570769Biblical truth nuke.I tried holding on and coping the game would de-enshittify at some point but the Walking Dead Secret Lair was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.Glad I sold everything.
Its depressing how Commander was a fan format created to dodge WotC's greedy format ruining bullshit and then somehow became the defacto retarded whale format.
>>744569510I liked the Mirroden-Kami-Ravnica-Time Spiral best. Llorwyn was the beginning of the decline with Planeswalkers when it turned out they weren't going to be a one block mechanic later on and also a sign the designers had lost their minds with bitter blossom. Mir to TS had healthy formats in the old stuff, type 2 and extended and the company wasn't chasing sales by releasing cards which should have never seen the light of day. Look at how often cards were banned in standard in this period compared to now. You had fuckups like skull clamp but you never had shit that was so fucking powercrept it was banned before it became legal and you didn't have bans every goddamned set.
