Why do we love castles so much?
It's unironically in man's nature to lay stones, just as it is to dig holes, because both of them are in the quest to explore heaven and earth. Consider the pyramids of South America and of Egypt, two groups of people with no communication building the same thing. Therefore it becomes pleasing to build and explore castles.
>logic>critical thinking>practical application of available resourcesWomen could never possibly understand.
>>744574673Except niggers.
>>744574560Every man instinctively feel the need to build a tower or an underground bunker. Castles are a mix of these two ideas.
>Put all you archers/crossbowmans on top of the main building>Campaign completed
They're basically monuments to masculinity.
I hate second pig's castle siege
>>744574560because they're fucking cool
>>744574951Is it this one?
>>744574750>Every white man instinctively feel the need to build a tower or an underground bunker. Castles are a mix of these two ideas.ftfy
>>744575406easy but it takes a decade (stronghold time) to capture it. did in very hard with 10% casualty, and frontal assault>test move units around and see which tiles where enemy archers & crossbowmen at the towers start firing at you. move your missile units just outside of their maximum attack range>attack ground with your missile units, targetting land behind the walls & towers. some stray arrows & bolts land on enemy units>several years later, outer fortification is defeated>repeat on inner fortification (cleaning the square towers is enough)>dig moats, ram down outer gate, set siege towers at inner gate.>scale the walls, sweep the rest of the walls & towers behind with melee units. spearmen first as cannon fodders
Music in this game adds so much to the comfy factor.
>>744574560Permanent markers of work and achievement. Every man who worked to build, defend or attack one can think back as he dies that he did something huge.
>>744575406This shit ass castle filtered me as a kid so hard I just recently re-did it with a youtube tutorial. Man, fuck the pig.

Do we still hate Stronghold 2? How about the remake?
>>744576737We hate everything except OG Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader. They have the money making formular with those two. Just make different European versions and everything is fine. Don't make 3D-shit.
>>744574560DUNNO M'LORD
No taxes is one thing but, erm... What about a little bit more? Go on
>>744574560Do actual castle design strats work in these games? If I make a star pattern castle will it actually give my archers arrow flank tactics?
>>744574736Now now, explorers found Africa had one, maybe two, giant walled cities, that were about as big as a European castle's keep. And they were all heavily populous and profitable which is why all of them were abandoned and never remade.Imagine Europeans living in Roman ruins and you think of the Elder Scrolls. And you know the best part about the Elder Scrolls is where you just pick up food out of the ground? Africa is just like that today. Except there aren't guards anywhere to be seen! Or guilds. Or merchants. Or money. Or toilets. Or human beings. ... Or vampires. So, swings and roundabouts.
if given any opportunity to build a base in any game the go to is ALWAYS>mountain side castle >leads into complex underground bunkerevery single base builder I'm doing this, its beyond peak. You get the security of the fortress and the comfyness of the underground bunker. Like for terraria for example I dont think ive ever built any other type of base in over 10 years, different variations yes but the core concept remains.
>>744577716A Stronghold style game were you're just a loincloth laden spearchucker constantly under threat of being eaten, would be pretty fun. Too bad you can't do that shit because crybabies.
>>744577760Current rimworld is an 800 mod medieval playthrough with exactly this, peak comfy. Ps, your buildings are on fire, sire.
>>744574560grown up versions of pillow forts
>>744574805This. There's never a reason to spread out your archers/crossbowmen around your castle unless you're attacked from multiple fronts which never happens in OG Stronghold

>>744577716pretty sure neither of these "castles" had any mortar. its one of a kind in the region but not very architecturally significant despite being a massive talking point
>>744576703This one is literally my jam. When you're building your comfy castle (by spamming loads of bakeries and fletchers) and this comes up, it's a great feeling.>>744574805Unfortunately this is also true, game is already solved by the first few campaign missions. Once you realize how powerful archers are, the game doesn't really offer up much of a challenge. Still peak castle building and atmosphere.>>744576737Don't hate 2, just uglier and added too many mechanics that fucking sucked, like rats and crime and gong. The honor system was alright imo.
>play aoe pvp with friend >He always builds stronghold-style square walls around his base>Complete waste of stone and also doesn't stop enemies from raiding me through his side>Build castles in his base towards the back instead of towards the enemy >Only builds production buildings in a grid >"Ugh anon your base is so messy.">"I only have fun when we win" -him
>>744578380dry stone can go really far if you're cutting the stones.look at the mesoamericans or the greeks.

>>744577716>Africa is just like that todayt. guy who has never been to Africa. Internet racists are terminal cornballs
>>744578445I love building base in RTS.
>>744577716>actual castlesoh, cool, I thought they only had that stupid mud fort in mali
It's because you like defensive RTS. You also LOVED Tower Defense games.
Wish there was more base defense stuff like They are billions, Conan or Age of Darkness.Me love.
>>744578720I was half joking. From corruption, to farming, to child soldiers, to dependency on Ukrainian grain imports, to water, to AIDs, to monkeypox, to ebola, to bushmeat, to Chinese investment, to donkeys (also China, they like to eat donkey fat, it's ancient chinese medicine), to the lack of mechanisation, to the lack of individualism defeating small businesses and self improvement..... the last documentary I saw on Africa was an ecological one. It was to promote some American billionaire philanthropy. You see they were helping to end African deforestation by providing Africans with small metal cookers, so they'd efficiently use their fuel, aka the wood from their local diminishing forest. It went to a literal mud hut tribe where these were in use. The problem was that the philanthropy failed to procure enough of these metal tins so the broken ones weren't replaced, and half of the tribe didn't believe it was any better than cooking using three stones to guard the fire, because to them a grill (a metal cooking surface) is some foreign lie or soul capturing device, it wasn't explained. It was exceptionally odd when you actually saw the mud huts because there was an aerial here, a solar panel there, things as far out of their reach as the simple metal griddles they were being offered. What would they need electricity for you ask? Their smartphones. So if one read between the lines of "These people and the forest were fine until recently", and no mention of agriculture or industry is threatening the forest, just fuel use, you'd wonder is it a population explosion, and then you might start to ask another question... what do they fell their trees with and are they too of American import?Give a man an axe, and he'll have heat for today. Teach a man to forest, and he'll have enough wood to last a lifetime. But no-one taught them how to be sustainable, certainly not themselves.
>>744579193Unless I'm mistaken that castle is the only castle. That's why it's famous.

>>744578876If I ever become rich I'm building my own medieval town...but with indoor plumbing and waste disposal.
>>744582775You tell me.There's any number of things like image related that probably go nowhere. When 3D printing became big there were adverts for 3D printing homes for Africans out of some kind of cement. It went nowhere of course, a money making scheme by a university to trial run making shoeboxes for blacks to live in.When I google random stuff I can get things likehttps://practicalaction.org/news-stories/local-news/how-were-making-clean-cooking-work-for-africa/First image in the article, oh look, one's wearing a Southpark shirt.>For millions of families across Africa, cooking is a daily act of care, but also one of survival. It’s done over open flames using firewood or charcoal, often indoors and without ventilation.>Women and girls are usually the ones who carry out household cooking.Oh no! Millions of families! And there's no gender equality either!>Over 3 million people die pre-maturely each year from illnesses linked to indoor air pollutionErmagerds!!!!1!>So far, the project has installed 815 solar streetlightsTruly a progressive continent. A whole 815 streetlights installed by a single org. That's fewer than your nearest town has by a magnitude of 10 I imagine. This isn't the only charity working to get them cookers. It's a free market. There's an entire continent of sad puppies to set up a business swindling people who want to give charitably for whatever reason they have. Some say it's to save on tax. I wouldn't know.

>>744584385>Letting the average larping idiot handle reproduction medieval farming tools.>Water liability was poor back in the day so everyone is drinking beer, constantlyHmmmm, health wavers, mandatory.
>>744584729people drank beer because it tasty and keeping a mild buzz year round from constant low-strength booze makes back breaking toil in the field more bearable along with the yummy carbs.people might not have known about germ theory but they did know that you were less likely to shit yourself if you boiled water first as well.
>>744585145No you've got it all wrong, people clearly would drink beer because it's healthy and not at all because it's alcohol!Next you'll say a lot of other food options, from milk to grain to meat, or even cleanliness in general, were extremely unhealthy, yet no-one "fixed" them on the same level as beer did water, as if it was about the reward and not the cleanliness
>>744584729Legally I have no idea how that works or even if it does. Manual labor can be dangerous. Water could be a problem but nothing an on location mead or ale brewery can't solve!
I'm so bad at this game... I can't figure out why, since the concept is simple. There's an economic mission involving fires, and I don't know what to do other than place a well every 10 meters, which seems ridiculous.
Is there something like Rollercoaster Tycoon but for castles?I don't know how it could work, since war is often paramount to these games.Maybe it could be a castle management game at times of peace, and all war is just logistics, just sending some troops to gain resources, like in RTC you could pay for ads on TV to increase customer turnout but you never got to see those ads.Building the castles freeform is the coolest part, I need to scratch that itch, but having a score goal makes it compelling.
>>744586275Of the ones I know. The more Casual one is Kingdoms and Castles. Very simple to play and you I am pretty sure you can disable raids and dragons. Then there is Going Medievil. I've had this one on my wishlist for quite some time. 3D Rimworld but focused entirely on the Medievil time period (with Z-levels). I've been watching it develop slowly before buying it.
>>744580658Africa makes me believe there is some intrinsic difference between races because I don't know how else you would explain how black people have been unable to turn some of the most resource rich areas on the planet into prosperous countries other than lack of IQ.

>>744574560Castles are so nortubel tier
>>744574560I wish I could access some of my old saves for Stronghold-some of them are mental I must have been so bored to make them. One of them wasn't a castle but I covered the entire map in bakeries and wheat production, maxed out population with maximum cruelty everyone just slaves making bread
>>744574951The first one is worse I think, cause it doesn't give you enough people and you have to kill everyone.
I only played Stronghold Crusader 2. Were the other entries in the series doing their own shit, given they keep changing the second word in the title when it wasn't a sequel?
>>744574560Forts, castles, bunkers, all rad

>>744582764same.and then I'd dig a bunker beneath it.best of both worlds
>>744576892I think Stronghold DE and Stronghold Crusader DE are fine.
>>744574560So what are we thinking on the soon releasing Stronghold 4? For me it honestly feels just as janky as Stronghold 2 was back in the day and scale once again is off with everything feeling way too huge. The Original & Crusader just nailed it down way too good with the isometric visuals
>>744575406put archers near that rock where they can outrange the crossbows, dig in the moat from the north with the protection of cliffs, break in the wall with the ram, run on top of the walls with maces
>>744593503Wait, they're making Stronghold 4?
>>744593503i swear im going to end up making my own castle sim, stronghold 2 got one thing right, the ability to fight inside towers and the keep>fighting off invasions>put your last crossbows inside the keeps balcony >put your last swordsmen at the front door kino, they need more scenarios like that, id make buildings that can attach to walls and have interiors as well, imagine fighting through a maze of rooms to get to the keep>>744593731theres a demo out on steam, its in unreal engine sadly so it will filter out low end PCs
>>744593863>its in unreal engineThat explains the lack of color.
>>744593503i tried the demo but as the kids say the "vibes" were off
>>744574560No taxes is good taxes, that's my motto.
>>744593863Sadly seems like they ditched the tower interiors again with this game, I loved stacking surprise pikemen inside towers so my ranged units dont get bumrushed by few rando macemen.SH2 got it right with the honor mechanics and its whole ecosystem of buildings and ways to make it. And honestly even the crime, gong & rats mechanics weren't tall that bad, they at least added some more stuff to manage in a castle sim. But the latter group seems to be gone in the demo>>744594143Yeah same here for me and I try to remain positive but they really shoulda just stuck to the tried and tested isometrics and maybe experiment adding more buildings and construction options as stronghold 2.5 (pun intended) or something. Especially now when the HD remakes are on unity engine which is piss easy to work in.
>>744594049its actually very annoying because you zoom out a little and all the colors sort of blend into a mush and its hard identify troops and buildings.

>>744588865The OG Crusader was/is better than Crusader 2. I don't know about the definitive edition since I haven't bought it
>>744594601Fool that you are, you have forgotten that digging a tunnel gives you the earth you need to begin construction of fortifications.
I like Stronghold Legends
>>744580658>But no-one taught them how to be sustainableThousands and thousands of naive white men have travelled all over Africa attempting to teach the savages to be self sufficient via farming, agriculture, forestry, tool use, etc. The issue lies in the savage's inability to think ahead. he is fine in the moment therefore he will be fine forever and has no use for planting a tree, there are trees right now. They can work farms while a white man oversees them but as soon as he leaves (or is killed for his magic scalp) the farm is burned and looted and the knowledge of planting a seed in the dirt and watering it is gone.
>>744587120Kingdoms and Castle looks fun, but more efficiency than building cool castles. The appeal of building my own Theme Parks with freedom in aesthetics was what kept me hooked to Rollercoaster Tycoon. The graphics are also not that cute.Going Medieval seems absolutely nuts. Not the game for me, but I am watching some gameplay on Youtube and am fascinated by how much autism it can contain. 10/10.

>>744598757It wasn't even close to fifty times. It's a little convoluted but when I first made the password there was a limit to how long it could be, so I entered what I wanted it to be and it cut off automatically. Later they changed this, but I could still enter it from muscle memory. But I guess yeah for whatever reason I was out of sorts and I did it 6-10 times wrong and bam permanently locked out .But yeah if Steam just accepted my Username and password none of this would be a problem. As it is they've basically robbed me
