Do i really need to update to windows 11?
>>
Isn't w10 extended with another year now? To 2027
>>
>>744575194
No.
>>
>>744575280
2032 with IoT LTSC
>>
>>744575194
unless you have the new intelaviv cpus there's no actual benefit updating from w10 to w11.
>>
dont do it. i did it yesterday and i hate it
>>
>>744575301
The free one year extension provided by microsoft i mean. Did they extend to 2 years?
>>
I still use Windows 7.
>>
>>744575394
What was wrong with it
>>
>>744575463
everything. and i don't mean it as a hyperbole.
>>
>>744575630
So say something specific and not hyperbolic.
>>
The last good Windows was 7
>>
>>744576120
Not him but it's measurably slower because something as basic as the new Explorer or Start Menu is just another browser window, and doing basic stuff takes more clicks.
>>
>>744575463
sorry i closed the thread after typing that but what i dislike the most is really nitpicky things as how open windows is handled. i have 2 monitors and i usually put stuff half screen by dragging the windows to the edge of the screen. in windows 10 when u dragged a window to the edge of a screen it sort of collided so u had to drag it again to pull it over to the other screen which made it really nice to make half screens. this feature is completely removed in windows 10 and instead it pulls up a big gray box to show and u need to aim it precise to make it happen. also it malfunctions if u drag the screen with the pointer too far to either side when u pull it.

the task bar is also shit but you can fix it with 3rd party plugins but i havent found a fix for the first issue. folders and the overall rounded look is also ugly as shit but i guess its fixable. righclicking stuff everything is in wrong order also and many things renamed for no apparent reason

>>744575194
fuck windows 11, i'm not getting extended updates either because i don't want to connect my ms account
>>
>>744576120
also, if u need to enter nvidia settings u need to right click -> more options -> nvidia settings instead of just clicking once for some reason. and when u do the original square look comes up intead of the rounded new ugly look which makes it even uglier because it changes from one style to another like they forgot to make everything look good together. its like when a game is just asset store flipped where nothing fits together. this is just from 1 day of using it mind you so im sure ill find more annoying things in the coming days. i also hate the new explorer cause it looks like google chrome instead of windows
>>
>>744576228
Good is a strong word, less shit is more apt
>>
Just install Linux.
>>
>>744575194
If you want better HDR, or longer-term driver and software support, it can be worthwhile, but in general it's a big disappointment and objectively worse than even the latter enshittified versions of W10. Fucking ads and AI and Bing in your face every second and a horrendous "modern UI" settings app that now no longer has any easy way to switch back to the classic control panel.
Most of this is solvable with tweakers, and fairly easily, but that's effort most people aren't bothering with.
>>
>>744575416
Yes but why wait until next year when you can wait six more?
>>
>>744576770
Linux is still a crapshoot, you need to be sure you have hardware that won't cause issues in Linux and many games still don't run properly. And you still have to do terminal magic for fixing some basic shit that should just work, and a gazillion ways to install apps (most of which will _not_ have the correct or latest or supported versions) is annoying is shit. Even if you're not on Ubuntu with its fucking snaps. The situation is miles better than it used to be, but it's not just miraculously perfect now.
>>
>>744575194
Anyone who moves on to W11 instead of Linux at this point gets the microdicking they deserve.
>>
>>744575194
If you're a wagie slave and need your pc for pencil pushing work then yes otherwise no
>>
>>744575194
Don't
I used it on laptop and hated every moment of it
>>
>>744576331
>is just another browser window
Could you explain?

The first thing I did with Win10 was to disable start menu internet searches, though I wouldn't say search speed increased to Win7 levels even with a better CPU and fewer files.
I also can't remember if it was Win10 or Win8 that started this whole concept of providing results or service before all data has been gathered, i.e. if I was on a slow laptop, Windows would load the login page but not your password so you couldn't actually log in if you were "too fast". Sort of reminds me of when video games started creating corridors, elevators and ladders in place of loading screens but unlike them Windows would let you out the elevator before it loaded the ground.
>>
>>744575194
Technically you don't because devs still acknowledge that W10 is very popular
But some are either willing to take the risk or are paid to do the jump like The Witcher 3/CP2077 devs who made W11 mandatory for titles which worked just fine on W10.
>>
My work pc is on W11 and I fucking hate it.
I've got into Linux early 2023 and while there's pebbles here and there it works.
>>
>>744575194
of course not
>>

Corporates are all creating rent based systems, where instead of providing value they're making threats.

For that reason, regression is a very serious problem to them. Because the minority of users who create value will be the first to regress, because their revenue is based on a minority of services, and users can buffer one another.

The classic example being Winzip. Because it exists, no later version can be monetised, at all. They make better and better ones but nobody will ever buy them. Their revenue model should be holding millions of zip files hostage, forcing all users to rent Winrar-2026, and deplatforming users who refuse, and then refusing to allow older PC's to even buy winrar2028 to try to mothball millions of very, very expensive commercial assets.

The barrier is my windows XP, a USB stick, and winrar. I could recompile my entire companies archives on this single laptop, no files could be held hostage, we'd just revert to another file format and they would lose the entire market.
>>
>>744575194
you need to update to CachyOS if you don't want microslop monitoring you and gobbling resources instead of running the fucking game
>>
So at work, real example, I administer many of the systems on ancient windows xp computers. Why? No dependencies. I run them as terminals and nobody can stop me doing that, they're air gapped.

Of the 99 computers and devices on the network, only one is productive. That's the xp terminal. Despite the monetary cost, power, capacity of the 99 user computers not a single one produces jack shit.

So here's the issue. If they could force me to use win-11 for the one terminal, they could force me to pay infinite rent on the 99 user computers. You know, the commercial liscence to use MS word enterprise which costs as much as a car every year.
So the XP saves us $65,000 a year, and from their perspective, a $100 PC is costing them $65,000 a year.

Companies which were in competition produce valuable hardware, systems, resources, compete on value. Companies which have monopolies charge rent, compete based on access, produce ransomware.
>>
>>744577053
im a fucking retard at computers and only used windows since 2003 and switched to cachyos and spent a weekend learning terminal commands and it was honestly one of the most fun things I've done with a computer in over 15 years

guess you're sol and stuck with windows if none of the alternatives appeal to you.
I'd still make some bootable flash drives of linux mint, cachyos, or really any distro with kde plasma desktop environment and try it out for fun though. if you find you like one you can also set up a dual boot and keep your windows install.
