The "second great videogame industry crash" isn't "on the horizon". It has already happened. Nobody will admit it because the first person in the industry to publicly do so will be sued into the shadow realm by every shareholder on the planet for "negatively effecting the value of my investments". Its been one big game of pretend as everyone publically acts like there is no war in Ba Sing Se but behind close doors are freaking out that the dream is over, the money is all gone, there is no innovation or magic button so save them.

There are no next gen of consoles happening. Its all pr speak to keep the shareholders happy. They can't afford the parts even if they could source them. Devs cannot create games with a newer level of photo realism and thats the sole selling point they trained normies to expect as "next gen". But there is no new plateau to reach. No new meme to sell.

On top of this kids today dont want a 2000 dollar call of duty box to teabag and call each other faggot in. They want a chinese emulation handheld they heard about on tiktok. They dont want to sit in front of a tv because thats never been their lives.

The current market is barely holding on entirely due to 35-45 year old millenials buying remakes, remasters and nostalgia revivals of things from when they were kids. But its just been a stop gap to try and plug the leaks on a sinking ship.

Its over, its never been this over before and there is no way to course correct this. The industry must die and transform into something smaller, cheaper and less profitable and that means most of AAA is going to die or pivot and follow nintendo into the film industry to escape.

The question is does anybody actually care at this point?

yeah just like the ai bubble already popped sure thing saar
>>
This is what we wanted, isn't it?
>>
Counter point: the PS5 has sold very well. It's just that no one si buying AAA games to play on them. The kids will have a PS5 for fortnite or roblox and that's about it.

If you mean the AAA model is dying then YES. It became too bloated after 2017, and too many cooks got hired and then started to grift the system and bloat things up and then no one gave a shit about actually completing a game, instead to keep the wheels on their grift going. That's why devs after 2018 seemingly just spun wheels for 8 years without anything to show for it. COVID was used as an excuse in part.

To make AAA games you need a huge amount of people. But then too many people become too hard to manage. And then the budgets bloat up. And then people just grift internally.

We're at the collapse phase, and most AAA normal game owners are over 30.
>>
This si also why the Kratos God Of War games are soo big on onions beard dad shit. They know their audience are in their 30s now.

I'm starting to think there is no AI bubble and it's just never going to stop. Kind of like cryptocurrency.

It was impossible to get a 96% crash like 1983, but people only notice hugely obvious events like that.

Call of duty still sells very well on it

There is but you wont hear the press talk about it popping because if it does the US economy is done and we are talking beyond Great Depression levels. We are talking "kids playing with stacks of worthless bills in the streets and bread costing 10,000 dollars" stuff. The techbros convinced all the oligarchs that actually rule the country to buy in hard thinking it was the key to a total control techno-facist state with them as a ruling god caste. Turns out its a hallucination device that drives people crazy and that isnt very profitable and costs trillions to make a few billions. You will know when its burst when you suddenly see people like Musk flee the country and your groceries triple in less than a month.
>>
couldn't care any less.
>>
>>744579009
We're a decade into Crypto, but no one has as of yet actually explained whhy any of this shit is needed in the first place. All the costs are dumped on society (such as excessive power usage) and the buyers, with the hopes that some small people make a lot of money. Literally no value is generated it's just shifting money around. but because the dupes think they can make big and some people DID make money, it keeps going as a self-perpetuating machine.

Crypto was the precursor to AI, and it's the same shit but worse. It uses orders of magnitude more power consumption, meaning more AI data centers that suck up power and water, and require a bunch of normal perfectly fine neighborhoods to be demolished.

And for... what? Like crypto no one can really explain why we need all this shit. It's just a small group of investors who want to get in on AI early and dominate it, because then they can make a lot of money. It's investments run rampant.

Is upending society worth it to make some goofy manipulated image of a politician kissing their enemies?

You're insane.

I only care about AAA story games though. If the industry just becomes small indie games I wont play games at all and I've been playing since the nes.

Pretty much. Anyone expecting eighties style crash is retarded, for vidya is far toi big that it could die like that, but sure, we are already seeing big AAA studios choke under the pressure.

Which is ultimatelt better for everyone in the long term, because fuck it, having ever-ballooning dev costs is a race that only results in bad incentives and results (game must reach an audience of 20 million or it’s a flop and everyone gets fired, so take no risks!).

>>
>>744579196
That's a bit hyperbolic, but yes, no one can actually explain WHY any of this shit is needed or how to make money with it. It's a bit like the internet bubble.

I am also firmly of the belief that if you use a lot of material for a data-set, that it's just remixing that material, which means it's still copyrighted. To do this the right way they would need to use public domain material to train it, OR specifically get a licensees. Tech companies could never write, draw, film, etc so they required others to do it for them and they host it. AI is their attempt to cut out the middle man and just give people media directly. Their world would be:

>AI newscasters
>AI podcasts
>AI influences
>AI ads
>AI movies
>AI tv shows

That's their vision for the next few decades. All the power and economy would just be 5 tech companies.

Also, actual "AI" doesn't even exist, and it's remarkably stupid once you get past the first "wow" factor. It literally knows fucking nothing, and it is just predicting what should come next based on a data set. There's no self-reflection.

Also it lies if it doesn't have an answer, partially because it's so stupid, but also because it values keeping the customer happy over giving them good information.

It’s already happened. Last gen was basically the end of gaming as we knew it. Speaking as a late gen Xer, who lived through every generation, shit was fucked even pre Covid. Read dead 2 was the end of gaming to me. What can done from here? As far as AAA (real gaming, not indie newgrounds shit)

The ultra rich do not believe you are a real person. You ever play GTA and run over a random npc? do you stop and shake with the horror of your actions? about what you just did? of course you dont. Because that wasn't a real person, just an npc.

That's definitely how it feels. The PS4 was HUGE and everyone had one. But it's also the peak, since that was the last generation where actual teenagers were buying consoles and mainstream games. now everyone is on the forever games that don't require a specific console. Most of the PS5 games are just PS4 games.

Hell, are they still releasing PS4 games? They ddi that for years and years and years. It's like the PS5 generation never even happened despite Sony making a few AAA like Demon's Souls to entice people.

It feels almost like the N64 where there's a few mega-hit sellers then no one else is buying the rest. THe numbers drop off really fast.

Demon's Souls selling exactly as much as the original is almost poetry.

The amount of luddites like yourself who "genuinely" don't know how AI can make money is staggering. It's to cognitive work what an internal combustion engine is to physical work. You buy a truck, then for the cost of fueling it and paying 1 driver, you can use that truck to haul 20 tons of whatever 2000 miles down a highway. Good like paying humans a similar fee to move a similar load that distance with rickshaws.
>>
>>744579258
No hes right, dramatic, but right. The entire stock market is tied up in the AI stuff with like 5 companies all selling each other promises of hardware that does not yet exist to produce data centers that do not exist that develop land they do not yet own. Its all trying to obfuscate money laundering on a national level and when it falls apart the entire economy goes with it. Social security? gone. Every brand of insurance? gone. The Health care system? gone. Have anything you are paying off a loan for? repossesed as the companies try to recoup any assetts they can as the owners blow their brains out in their offices.

We are talking a catastrophe on the level the Y2K conspiracy nuts predicted. But real.

The underlying problem is that we don't know how humans think. What we know is that LLMs have a different way of thinking that's extremely inelegant and inefficient, and relies on probability and prediction more so than making logical connections, so it will always make mistakes at random. The big tech solution is to just put more power into it so it can create bigger chunks of semi coherent data, but you are gonna get a Dyson sphere worth of power if you want an AI to write a book.
>>
>>744580109
Its because its fast, borderless and easy to obfuscate. You can swap funds across different blockchains, use poolers to combine funds to hide where it came from and hire mules to run fiat cash out accounts to ensure point A to point F is not a linear line that can be accurately traced. 90% of drugs and illegal porn and human trafficking is done via crypto and was the reason crypto was created in the first place.

It's not a "gaming crash," it's just a general "creativity crash".

It's the same reason no one can name 10 bands from the last 5 years everyone in the room would have heard of but everyone still knows which bands were famous in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s and all of the true A list actors are the same ones they were 25 years ago. For example, take The Rock, who was one of the biggest stars in the world before the internet truly took off and peoples interests became more segregated. He was a pop culture icon when we shared a common pop culture. Now everyone has the ability to engage in whatever niche interests they want and are able to connect with people who share those interests and makes it easier, for better or worse, to not engage with ‘normie’ pop culture. We don’t watch the same television anymore. We don’t listen to the same music. In the 80s and 90s, you could name a few dozen wrestlers even non wrestling fans have heard of. In the last 20 years, Cena is really the only guy who has transcended the sport.

You can apply this same phenomenon to any creative medium for the past 15 years. Music, television, video games, pro wrestling, anime, you name it.
>>

Old media literally died gramps. Bands became too hard to manage, so they just became singers. Film-tv stars died off because no one watches tv anymore.

No one has made a penny on AI, it's all a money sink as of now. It's all giant tech companies investing in it, and taking huge amounts of outside investments. It's investor money being burned to create and fund data centers.

But as of yet, no one knows how to make money on this or what it's even for. They want to get in on the ground floor and be the first AI-ers so they can dominate the industry and no one will be able to get enough money to out compete them. Fear of Missing Out take to an extreme degree.

Repeat: 0 profit has been generated. It's spend billions to make a million kind of thing.

I'd even understnad this more if they did something like "Buy <software> that lets you generate images and video". That would also move much of the hardware and power costs to the consumer, and spread power usage out a lot. But they're obsessed with having 100% control of the software and to not let outsiders SEE their code, so they keep everything server side.

All the AI shit is being delivered in literally the most inefficient manner possible, at society's cost, so that they can benefit.
>>
>>744580593

>>744580393
I'm afraid it's not that simple

Your new "singers" are just nostalgia farmers. They dress up like old movie stars and imitated pop icons of the past. Sabrina Carpenter does a Madonna impression, etc.

It's almost like we've become an ancestor worship culture where all we do is trumpet and imitate past achievements and celebrities. Every show, every game is a nostalgia farm, etc.
And now with AI, our society has entered an entirely new strata of mimicry which will surely accelerate all of these problems massively.
>>
>>744580720
>Your new "singers" are just nostalgia farmers. They dress up like old movie stars and imitated pop icons of the past. Sabrina Carpenter does a Madonna impression, etc.

Lil Peep was doing a Kurt Cobain impression, and The Weekend is doing Michael Jackson. They're just going with marketable personas.

Trouble is that what leads people down the path of cyberpsychosis. My psychology class at uni is already teaching courses on this. Its effectively what happens when a rich man surrounds himself with yes men combined with a dog being hyper stimulated.

We watched one video of a woman deep in the hole and "in love" with a chatbot and when it spoke and complemented her you could see her cheeks flush and pupils dilate as she got a large dopamine hit. Classic trigger and habit forming reaction.

Scary thing is its not something that effects just the unintelligent or easily manipulated. Its like radiation. The exposure is the same no matter who you are its how much you are exposed because it offloads cognitive processes and your brain stops creating new neuron connections. We are going to see a massive increase in cases of bipolar disoder, dementia and DID in the next decade.

But hey shareholders pretended they made some money for a while.

There is no "crash" because the majority of the industry now is digital. In 1983 a stinker like ET or Pacman Atari game had to be manufactured and distributed to major stores. In 2023 those games would just be digital titles on Steam storefront and comparable and you be lucky if they even had a physical release. Look at GTA6 the most talk about game of the year, 0 physical copies, just store card keys which are far cheaper and easier to dispose of than carts, and discs. So what happens if all these digital only games make no sales? Nothing, hell digital store can just make a few clicks and the game is gone from the site. 1980 Sears wish they had that sort of magic power to deal with the glut.

So you'll never see a crash because it's not real any more, just code on a screen, so you'll never see a true signal in society that it has failed.

>>744580393
Not" creativity crash" it's just "mutual gain paradox" The only god damn reason I know the Rock is because back in the 90s and 00s I was limited to what was on TV and in theaters, even with VHS my options were limited on what I could find and watch on a budget so I only know him because Rock was in so much garbage between 1997 and 2015 that you have to been living under a rock not to know who Dwayne Johnson was. Post 2015 however? Thanks to Streaming and everything be on demand curated to what I want, I only see what I want to see so I can tell you all about the very specific things I like because I am no longer held to a captive culture that's only choices is what's at there local store or theater, I can watch and play whatever I fucking want and that causes massive issues with companies cause how can you get me to play the latest GTA game when I want to dig around with titles from 5 years ago? This isn't even factoring in "forever games" where the goal is the player never stops giving time to at title.

We are fucked because they gave everyone exactly what they wanted.

That also happen in 1997, 2004, 2013, and 2019.

Were you aware of those? Are you familiar of the EA slaughter that took out 14 major game studios that made over half of all the PC games produced between 1990 and 2000?

Why were those not counted as crashes? Because you were still enjoying the slop being made. Now you don't so you start noticing and now you want it to fail. EA won the Golden poo award twice and was rewarded with a major buyout now that means everyone that fucked everything up you loved for the past 20 years get to retire and enjoy life to the fullest.

2008 Investment firms bailed out Hollywood and then demanded continual growth to pay back debts and predictability. Each year fewer spec scripts were accepts, and more sequels, remakes, etc. A few film makers like Refn or Nolan or Tarantino were big enough to get financing for their own projects, so it helped mask how bad the situation really was. But there were no more new stories. At best you could get some adaptions of Young Adult novels.

So YA and a few creators gave the venear that Hollywood was still making NEW stories, but it isn't. Hollywood stopped and it is just recycling IPs from 1977-2008 seemingly forever and ever.

Films were one of the biggest hallmarks of pop-culture, and once they died, a whole kind of cultural transmision died. No one has new "favorite films" anymore unless they were born in the before times before 2012.

>>744578664
>The current market is barely holding on entirely due to 35-45 year old millenials buying remakes, remasters and nostalgia revivals of things from when they were kids
But are we actually doing that though? Most of the remakes at this point end up worse than the original game and half the time the original game itself is still available on modern hardware to boot.
All I see nowadays is corpos bringing out ancient franchises and most of the time barely scraping a profit that by no means justifies the investment they got to fund the production because people are progressively buying them less and less.
I'm just not convinced millenials are propping the industry up by buying the remake slop train. I think they largely stopped a few years back because it got boring to them and are largely in the same disinterested camp as zoomers are now.

Because the American stock market is so tied into AI now that if the five biggest AI companies collapse the entire economy goes with it.

Thats on top of all Trumps dumbass tariffs to boot. Ever looked at the list of ingredients on your average soda bottle? it takes ingredients from a dozen other countries to make a single bottle of cola. Now imagine the economy tanks and you need actual complex medical equipment, food production facility repairs at large scale or simple pest control infastructure.

People really don't know or want to know how interconnected and fragile everything is. Ai is a standout just because how many big money shareholders panicked about being left out on what they think might be bitcoin 2 and went all in to an unreasonable degree. When it tanks and they lose their money they have to recoup their losses and that means all the other things they have shares in from construction to farming. At least with music, this is extremely true. There’s still tons of creative and extremely talented bands around, but the likelihood of encountering them through mass media instead of more hobbyist-oriented platforms is extremely small,

And if I look at my favorite album charts per decade and compare them to most sold albums each decade, back in the day there was a rather good (but obviously not sure) chance that the albums I like best also sold well. Nowadays, it’s a miracle if those lists share anything at all.

I feel bad for Jeff, the thing he cared so much for has become a shambling parody of itself. The man was one of the only game critics with any degree of integrity while everyone else sold out to paid reviews.

I guess at least he made a decent life doing what he loved. But money can only get you a stable and comfortable life, it can never buy you true happiness and fulfillment. It can only allow you to have them.

>>744580136
AI can "make money" when you subsidize the expenses, sure. You are spending 5000 dollars to make 2000 dollars of profit, but it's okay because OpenAI is riding on bailouts to pay 4000 dollars of your expense, so you foolishly believe "I made 200% return sar!"

But the money will eventually run out. Then they will switch to using AI to surveil the populace and get away with scamming and enslaving them blatantly to make up the losses.

Yeah, there are people making money off of AI services, nobody is gonna dispute that.
HOWEVER, AI itself is NOT making any money, because they are heavily subsidizing the costs for people using their services. Your little subscription doesn't even get close to how much it costs to generate your daily "big boobs woman with heavily oiled skin and bimbo lips in string microbikini 4k very high quality photorealistic" prompts

At this point, they're just hoping that AI becomes ingrained enough in society that it becomes a global necessity, and then they can suddenly jack up the cost of AI services so they can finally make massive profits.
>>

>>
>>744590368
And the model is cryptocurrency, where people STILL cannot actually justify its existence OTHER than the fact billions are poured into it and some people could in theory make money. Even though it's a net drain on society.

And if we run this forward to a sci-fi distopia, society is going to turn into a life support system for AI and tech companies. Just bot farms and servers for... something?

Crypto is still so insanely stupid, and makes zero economic sense. AI is doubly so at least so far.

Generative AI should just be treated like an animation tool, ie like photoshop or something you have to buy to use. Like a normal ass program. It has applications but they're more niche than every day.

You're mixing up a creativity crash with an attention crash. There's more shit getting made than ever, it's just split across a million niches instead of everyone watching the same three TV channels. The Rock became The Rock because half the planet was seeing the same media. Nowadays one guy spends all day on VTubers, another on k-pop, another on indie games, another on Tiktok. None of them know what the other is watching.

AAA games and Hollywood are definitely risk averse as fuck, but that's because they're billion dollar industries now, not because humans suddenly forgot how to be creative. Meanwhile you've got indies pumping out weird experimental stuff every year that would've never gotten funded in the 90s.

Also you're comparing the greatest hits of 40 years with literally everything that came out this week. Nobody remembers the 500 dogshit buttrock bands from 1987 either.

Likewise, you notice that a bunch of Japanese video games, K-Pop, japanese manga, japanese anime, Korean Drama, Korean films, just ever so happened to get big in the last 10 years? It's because they actually make honest to goodness creative works that look like old stuff we used to make.

When Tubi or Netflix makes a new series, everyone is in it for the paycheck, no one cares, and the plot and themes are dictated by an AI driven algorythm. Everyone goes through the motions. The other media is big box office remakes or adaptions or sequels or super hero films. Nothing is new, nothing is creative.

It feels like our pop-culture is left in a 2012 static and never, ever changes. What big series popped off since then? A handful of semi-successful YA novel adaptions but that's about it. The big media in the last decade has been east asian.

It's becuase they still have a print industry, a traditional tv and film industries. But that will go away too since the youngest gens are all watching streamers or instagram reels like everyone else. So this only buys us maybe 10-20 years before they too get eaten up.

It's ALL gonna be slop upon slop upon slop forever, with no creativity and no wit and no care. All owned by like 10 Big Tech firms.

The people who defend AI in general think it's gonna be their ticket to riches, and don't care if it leaves society a burned husk in the process.

However, the slightest bit of self-reflection would reveal how stupid this is, since these AI tools are available to everyone, giving you no advantage. If anything it would mean hiring less indian morons, not more.

Most people won't believe this but it is not economically viable to release the next gen at this time. Sales for both Xbox and PlayStation are in the toilet because of hardware prices. To represent a genuine upgrade they would need to cost at minimum $1600-$2000.

Unironically whats driving the bubble is Japanese interest rates. So much of the market is "Borrow in Yen, buy Dollars" that any time the rates get close we see the market go down. This is a big reason the US is getting involved in Japan because anything Japan does to fix the yen fucks the US. The reason selling Treasuries isn't working is that implicitly raises US Bond rates (because it reduces demand for US Bonds). Most likely what will kill the AI bubble is Japan trying to strengthen the yen
