Cool tech/attention to detail in vidya gaems goes ITT
Didn't you get the memo? Technology is bad and woke now.
Tell me again why don't these 'features' stack? Why don't developers reuse features that already exist instead of wasting time reinventing the wheel by making their own? I used to think that if a game had a certain feature, future games would keep it and add new ones on top of it... until it eventually built up into a fully realized 'world'>optimizationDon't give me that.>tech can'tReally...?
>>744582361Because the code is not shared between developers, think of it like with car design.Nowadays, most cars share the vast majority of features, but the detail of how those features were designed was independently done by each car manufacturer. Each car manufacturer had engineering teams dedicated to designing the features of the car, Ford didn't share their design documents and engineering blueprints with Honda. If Honda wanted a feature that Ford had, they had to put their engineers to work. For games, it's the same. You only see feature reuse/improvement like that when a studio reuses their engine and they can carry over features into newer games. Most of it is closed source. So if another dev studio wants to implement glass shattering like in Resistance, they have to do it from scratch - most of the time this is deemed unnecessary and too time consuming to warrant spending dev time on it.There are already a lot of graphics and physics libraries available, things like Nvidia PhysX or AMD FidelityFX, which provide templates and all the base functionality to implement things like hair, particles and object physics. But it's still up to the developers to implement that into their engine, to have the assets built in a such a way that they are compatible, etc.
>>744582361Usually such things are based on some secret sauce of a certain dev; he can share some basic recipe, but not how it was implemented, because it's his time, his experience. And after layoffs, the company loses it too
Attention to detail in Tales of the Abyss, with the items in the environment actually being what the shop has in stock (this is the only shop in the game with Mythril weapons) and the in-universe alphabet actually stating this is a gear shop for weapons and armor, surprisingly in English. 2005.
>>744582085How about lost tech?
>>744583561Let me guess, they removed havok integration because ms owns it now
In Dishonored, if you side with Abigail Ames in the Knife of Dunwall DLC then import that savefile to Brigmore Witches, there will be a Favor available in the Dead Eels level for 100 coins granting you a bonecharm alongside a note that reads:>"Accept this as a small token of my appreciation for the work we did together in Rothwild's place. My sources say that this is the sort of thing you would go out of your way to find. May it protect you, or empower you, or whatever these things do. I hope we find ourselves on the same side of a cause in the future. You are a great ally."That's the result 97% of people end up with, but if you actually interrogated her with the torture chair but then spared her life, the Favor will still be there only it'll cost 25 coins as if enticing you to buy it... only for you to read a different note stating:>"When last we met I clearly did not impress upon you enough how connected and capable I can be. We had an opportunity to work together, but you saw fit to put me in that horrible chair and torment me instead. By the time you reach the end of this note the "gift" I left for you will explode, but I wanted you to know that it was me who had beaten you. Farewell Serkonan."After which you have a second to think fast before an explosion triggers right in front of you.
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Revelations have unique cutscenes that trigger in Hidden Tombs if you do certain actionshttps://youtu.be/NMt4LlbpVgA?t=429As seen above you'd kill the dude in normal combat and move on but if you instead throw him off the scaffold there's a hidden cutscenehttps://youtu.be/ILK6FCAEwrQ?t=37Then in the first tomb in Revelations you need to kill a dude to move on to the next room, he's high up so most players will simply shoot him from a distance and leavehttps://youtu.be/D5MtTcmE8YQ?t=420But if you instead climb up to and air assassinate him you can again trigger a unique cutscenehttps://youtu.be/wZPpYAOHNyQ?t=2106And last but not least a couple details in Revelations' ending in pic related. First in the scene where old Altaïr is hugging his son, you can see young Altaïr hugging Al Mualim in the reflection in the water. Later on and for a split second, you can see Juno outside the van when the camera is about to zoom into the Grand Temple's entrance when Desmond and co. arrive.

>>744582361Like what other anons said, usually it's the secret sauce of the devs. Sometimes these little touches were one dev's little pastime and not something that the broader team had on their to-do list. The bottle shader in Half-Life Alyx specifically comes to mind.

>>744582361A lot of those features don't play nice with one another. Things like global illumination and destructible environments can be optimized to run in real time on their own, but those optimizations are based on assumptions that cease to apply when more than one of these features are combined (e.g. global illumination only works in real time if the map is static, the data structures used to perform lighting lookups quickly during rendering have to be precomputed when the map is made which is relatively slow even on a high end computer, so destructible maps can't be used together with global illumination).
