Why would anyone be an indie dev when your success depends entirely on winning the algorithm game? There has to be a better way.

How about good marketing?
>>
Making games is fun. I make games because I enjoy the process.
If someone else likes my games, thats cool too. I havent made a cent, I've made negative money by hosting a download server. I have my dayjob for making money.

the fact that you can make a game you would enjoy won't make your game a good product
pushing a product involves many other things besides game making, and your game won't be succesful as a product unless you are aware of all of them and plan for them

Why do people push this retarded boomer advice nonsense? Do you really think someone who make games for 10 years should purely make them for passion and just live an unspoken obligation bohemian lifestyle? No one wants to be a fucking poorfag for the rest of their lives, and having more money would allow you to take even more creative risks or furthering your ambitions on making great games. Imagine if you told this to every single doujin/indie Japanese company that they shouldn't bother making money and instead just make random 2D games for their rest of lives. This is the type of shit you find on Reddit and other gamedev related channels where every crab in a bucket repeat the same dogshit advice.
>>
>>744584947
Nothing Ive made is on steam. Back before greenlight you needed a publisher to get through the red tape. Self hosting has always been an option, its still an option even today now that greenlight has been retired.
At most youll find my name in the credits of my friend's games because I like to lend a hand here and there.
>>
>>744585120
I'm speaking as a consumer. If indie games were an actual true profitable endeavor for a very small team, the store would be even more flooded with cashgrabs than it is.

Either you have a medium sized indie team with a decent publisher making very astute calculations or you are a single dev that is making a living some other way (or living off parents) and making vidya as a hobby.

That's seriously the answer. You are not expected to profit. If that's your goal, you are foolish to even attempt it.

>>744585120
He does have a point though, game development, indie game development especially isn't a fullproof guarantee and most successes are partially due to luck. If you go into game development with the mindset of purely profiting off of it, you're going to end up devastated and end up quitting if your game ends up flopping. It's not a bad thing to want to make games for profit but if you're not having fun making them it's going to be harder for you in the long run.

>>
>>744585120
Youre reading words that arent in the posts youre responding to.
What theyre saying is that banking your livelihood on indie dev is a horrendous gamble. You should only do dev if you actually enjoy it, but you should also have your finances squared away by having an actual job. Its the same sort of advice as not planning your future off of playing the lottery.
Passion is what keeps the hobby entertaining. Money is what turns it into a job, and you should have a job that is little more consistent than gambling. Only an established developer or studio can treat it with a return on every product released and even they can make flops
>>
>>744583782
Not on social media.
>>
How come most developers are like, I have a 3 day window during launch to make it big, otherwise it's a flop?
Does shilling no longer work? Going on reddit and other sides to market your game? If it's truly good, people should eventually notice even years after launch.
>>
>>744585563
Hot period for steam algorithm to pick it up. Otherwise youre muscling your way into a crowded space with hundreds of other noname devs doing the same thing as well as big devs masquerading as "indie"
The real strategy is to know your demographic and shill as hard as you can to them specifically, the general public is way too broad. You want to find your diehard fans ASAP and let them share within their niche circles.

Only if there's a direct transaction. That's why the major game publishers often send journalists halfway across the world with all expenses paid rather than just emailing them a press packet, and also why they regularly receive exclusive merchandise that is never made available for purchase.

>doujin/indie Japanese company
The people who rarely ever break even and have an unspoken agreement to never profit from their work because doing so would be copyright infringement? Those guys?
I get what you're saying, but there's a difference between making something for profit (normal) and expecting something you made to profit (retarded). If you're indie and you haven't done extensive networking and viral marketing, you've already lost desu; if you don't want to deal with all that garbage and just want to make games for fun then there's no harm in that.

>>
>>744585974

>>
>>744585927
>The people who rarely ever break even and have an unspoken agreement to never profit from their work because doing so would be copyright infringement? Those guys?
"Doujin" is literally the Japanese word for indie and they make money even with copyright infringement material. How many times I've seen Dragon Quest or character lewds on DLSite with a price attached to them?
>>
>>744585927
>if you don't want to deal with all that garbage and just want to make games for fun then there's no harm in that.
And it's because of these people that indie games are good. Sometimes those kinds of guys happen to get really successful by a combination of skill and a lot of luck (Balatro guy, Vampire Survivors guy) but that was just the cherry on top of their expectations. Both of them are smart enough that they didn't expect it.

And the AA industry is non existent and AAA developers are more dogshit than ever, so these passionate people are nearly single handedly carrying gaming nowadays. God bless them.

Speaking of, Sovereign Tower comes out in a few days. Looking forward to trying it out.

When did the indie scene become the same greedy collection of cunts as AAA?
Worse is now actual steam releases like Honcho are taking a page from porn games and doing their early access period via patreon subscription, so now there's precedent for early access games to be a monthly subscription fee leading up to the steam release, or an even worse future where the final release is still locked behind a subscription paywall.

Just make an actually enjoyable game. Someone somewhere will play it, and if they enjoyed it, they'll mention it towards their friends or even outright recommend it.
It doesn't have to to be super revolutionary or high quality, it just has to have an enjoyable gameplay loop or story.
>>
>>744585120
100% agreed, the people who claim that creative projects should done on their spare time also complain when projects like Oddity take too long.

they put low effort into their craft and cant relate. they think that mspaint scribbles are equivalent to full length projects that are tough to commit to and complete
>>
Steam shoves games your friends played and reviewed in your face, even if it's femboy feline fuckbuddies or something. If people aren't seeing your game, it's because your first buyers didn't like it enough to give it a good review.

Particle Fleet was okay, but definitely didn't like it more than CW. Especially the last couple of missions with long range sniper turrets were annoying as hell.
You could try the "new" game, Creeper World IXE. I haven't played it yet, but it looks like a combination of CW2 and Particle Fleet, where you control ships again.

Also it's not quite an endless cycle, just a really long one. It's not groundhog day, but civilizations emerging and getting destroyed one after another because the particle is deconstructing everything to gather information over billions of years to summon some artifact that gives god mode. To be honest most of the important part of the story is almost entirely contained in CW3. The rest give you some lore and background info on previous civilizations.

Seriously, if you are a game dev pick a side between troons and chuds and get very active in their communities on the socials, once you start getting a good amount of reactions you can start shilling. You don't have to participate in culture war shit but you do have to acknowledge you can't win everyone over so you have to pick a side to grift off.

This is leftist academia nonsense point of view. Scott Cawthon fully milked FNAF for years because he knows if he couldn't keep up making break out hits then that's the most he could do, and generally people liked his later works more to this day.
>>
>>744587291
Problem with being TOO fresh is that buyers dont have a frame of a reference and avoid it because its unfamiliar territory. Lots of people want rehashes of existing products because they desire "game X, but more of it" even if no new ideas get introduced to be wholly standalone
This fate befell one of my friends games, even with a demo people bounced off of it. Only people the game clicked with became fans, but at least he broke 50 reviews.
>>
>>744588715
Scott started milking it when it got successful. He got surprised by the deserved and pure happenstance success of FNAF 1. Before that, he was making other passion projecs that sold like shit. This wouldn't have been a problem if there is a popular platform to talk about unknown games and give them the spotlight they deserve. Backlogged fucking sucks because most of them try to be like letterboxd, xitter is only interested to be like Instagram thanks to that kike Nikita Bier, and this place just screencap xitter posts for ragebait and it's full of 3rd worlders posting porn or trying to be contrarian.
>Inb4 "anon, what about the daily hidden gems thread?"
That hidden gems thread had potential but here's the thing: No one actually fucking talks about the games and why we should play them. Just arbitrary rules like "only post games with less than 100 reviews" and then people do that and no one talks about them. I have never seen an example from that thread that managed to spawn it's own threads here on /v/.
>>744588884
>Before that, he was making other passion projecs that sold like shit. And he was doing it as a hobby, on the side
Scott has admitted several times that he wanted to make money from his games and he was extremely depressed being poor. He was going to quit game development for good if FNAF 1 flopped.

The point of those threads is to find cool games you can play. Asking for discussion is a bit much when only 2 anons max will have played it by the time the thread is made.

This came out recently, I saw zero discussion anywhere but it seems like it sold tons of copies.

How did they pull it off? Porn and a publisher?

Agree to disagree. I don't (and you either judging by your post) expect you to actually make money off of deving. If you got your vision out of the white noise then that should be considered a success. Maybe your next game will do better now that you are an established dev too

102 reviews is a ton of copies for an indie game.
You have inflated expectations if you think most of these 1-5 man teams sell more than 1000-2000 copies.

Also porn game review to purchase is totally different if you read dev discords, regular is 1:10 porn is like 1:50

Look thanks for the big list and I'll be looking at each and every one of htese, and I know Mystery of the Malign to be a great game.
Minos is incredibly shit. It's one of the most brainless games I've played and it genuienely pains me to say so because it has a great concept but the actual game is you repeating the same trap layout over and over again until disarmers are introduced, then you fuck around with the reorder plates which are utter dogshit and never work the way you want them to and you just give up and make the same trap layout anyways and abuse ballistas.
One of the stupidest parts of the game is the fact that boulders are so cool and yet like 90% of the enemies are immune to them so even if you go out of your way to reorder immune enemies you still end up with a conga line where the boulder will still break apart because lmao immunity.
The secret trap concept was great though.

I 100%'d it in ~5 hours. Unless you cheat in resources I don't think you can finish it in under 2, because you're expected to attempt levels a lot until you can get enough resources for your turrets to get strong enough(it's an incremental game if you're familiar with that genre).
As for what's there, 12 levels, 4 tools(missiles, nukes, airstrikes and a freeze ray), 7 turrets(gunners, flamethrowers, mortars, slow gas grenade launchers, laser turrets, cannons and tesla coils).
If you've played the demo you're missing out on at the most like four levels, 3 turrets(lasers, tesla and the grenade launcher) and the freeze ray(which I've never used in the full game).

I would say, the best way to go about it would be to interchange big projects with small one. For example start working on your dream game or whatever or a big project you have but then, when you hit a feature mechanic implement it in a separate game. Do short sprints making a simple game with said mechanic earn more money, playtest that feature and implement the feedback and changes into your actual big game. use the money earned to keep going for another couple of months and then repeat when you want another big mechanic.

The best thing is probably to participate in game jams, because you'll have feedback on which ideas are actually worth pursuing
Or just make something autistic that you know you yourself will enjoy and if it is any good, it will find an audience

Unfortunately there's a je ne sais quoi that only comes from true passion. Fun games are made by people that want to make games solely because that's what they want to do. Anything over £125k is 45% with no personal allowance (anything under you don't have to pay taxes on 12.5k of your total earnings)

So that £200k has already become £110k and then national insurance contributions for self employed earning over 50k is an additional 8%

Right, so it all goes back to the same thing we've been saying from the start. Indie game development is a hobby and no amount of skill can assure you a sustainable life with that "job". I make a lot of mods/campaigns for several games as old as 20 years ago. I'm always working on some new project. Friends and family ask why I'm not doing it for a living, creating my own game, or joining some dev studio, and the reality is, I don't want to. Sure, I hate my job. But at least I get an escape by creating my own shit. If I joined gamedev, I'd more than likely making shit I didn't want to make for fuckers I don't like. As for my own game, well, I'm not a programmer. I do a lot of scripting in a lot of the games I work on, and I could probably learn it, or use some of the node based shit in some of the engines, but I'd rather just do what I currently do.

I don't want my passion being destroyed by being obligated to use it for someone elses benefit, even if it paid the bills. I rather just go to my current job, pound it out, then come home and forget about it when I'm designing some environment. I don't want to ever hate game development.

My dream would be to have a patreon and release certain mods/new campaigns for the older games I work on for years to come. Constant content.

First. Are you making a game just to make money or are you making it because you are passionate about your vision and want to create something for you? Those can overlap at times, but most of the time it wont.
Second, are you sure you made a good game? Making 5 garbage games, does not mean you should make the same money like the last 5 GTA games combined.

If at the end you can't make a quality game, nor a game with wide appeal, at least learn how to market it well.

This is why you start a company before you release your game. The company can only be taxed 25% on profits of over £250k, and will be taxed less under that threshold (down to the minimum of 19%). Then you pay yourself a wage while working on your next game, instead of trying to take home the full sum. You can also offset some of the profits in various ways (i.e. start paying yourself as soon as possible). Although the chances of being successful enough with your first game to even worry about it is probably pretty slim.

I don't know about Germany, probably still just fucked.

Games get sold on both their marketing and their inherent quality. Sometimes more of one than the other. You had shovelware in the nineties and that's what a lot of indie games of today are. Cheap, poorly made games with rough executions and sub-par ideas.
The games of the past that didn't have marketing teams and big name publishers had the benefit of being early birds in a very new medium and didn't have to compete with a million other games out there.
This is the consequence of technology being in the hands of even the poorest people. Every one can make a game, so good luck getting yours noticed.

This is no doubt the biggest lie I've ever read because Millennials are peak conformist cucks that had fun and did whatever they want and then pulled the ladder from zoomers and didn't allow them the same privileges they had. That's why I never pursued it. Or at least stopped dreaming of making a career out of it. It's a hobby. I've seen the writing on the wall with the industry. It's not like a group of guys making shit in the 90s. It's lay offs and making shit you don't want to for big corpo.

But that small group of guys is still the best way I think. These indie devs. The group of nerds in their basement. Find you some like minded dudes that are committed and want to make something. You all do it in what time you have out of your 9 to 5 then sell it. It fails, you go to the next until something hits. That way, you're working on things you're passionate about, and if they flops, at least you tried? The downside, you're doing it in between work. This part doesn't really bother me. I get off work, and if I'm up to it, I jump into my project. Shit takes longer, but the future will get here eventually anyway.

My main advice I can give anyone. Do not shortcut shit. If I don't enjoy a way a level plays, or a texture looks, I redo it. If you're going to ship mediocre just to ship, you're really wasting your time. Don't make something you yourself doesn't think is the fucking best. Play test often. I recently ran through the first half of one of my campaigns and had some of the best time in that game I'd ever had. I'm not worried about it being popular when it drops. The community is going to love it, because I fucking love it.

Love the work you do, and people will always come for their slice.

>>744593480
>So if you spend 3 years making it you might not have enough money to make another one.
The way I see this is main issue for most indie devs. Without a passive income source that covers at least your regular expenses you're either doomed to wageslave or if you have the necessary capital (optimally from the profit of your last game(s)) you have to risk it all by investing it into yourself / the development of your next game. Even if you're doing very well by indie standards you only have one shot, as you'll only have expenses throughout the years of development and essentially bet everything on a successful release and a tight window afterwards to make it all worthwhile. A sub-optimal release can render all your efforts and sacrifices fruitless in a minute. Finding your lane and cultivating an audience that allows you to make a real living by dropping a game every couple of years is a success story only a few % of the market achieves. But to escape the rat race for real you need a mainstream hit. There's no way around it.

Selling art is inherently a gamble. You need to be ready for losing your entire investment. There is no concrete rule for being a successful art seller, luck plays a very major factor. As such, most devs will lose, just like most gamblers do. NTA but Sephiria is great. Only problem is most good builds end up being one-trick-ponies, especially for my favorite Scholar Lizzer. It's all either slavery in the Negligence greatsword mines, turning my sword into a gun via Beast Mark, or sitting on my ass holding Rightclick with any shield. But the artwork is adorable, the music is fantastic, the inventory management is fun, and the atmosphere is comfy to an absurd degree.

Check out Lost Castle 2 if you haven't. It's similar to Sephiria in some ways and it's also an S tier action hack'n'slash roguelite.

Steam has really good discovery tools if you look around the site (I don't think most people do). I only add early access games to my wishlist and had to stop adding games because I added so many. Almost all of them are solo devs or small teams under five people or so. A few games came from devs on this site. I only really care about action RTS and real time with pause games. There are not that many of each on the platform and its easy to keep up with them. The release calendar is good especially under specific genres. You can also follow games and get game news per game on a daily basis. Going even further each game has its own RSS feed you can use too.
>>
>>744600838
>>744600992
if you're the dev of a game with 900 reviews and you insist you didn't make enough, then share your expenses and earnings. because every time the case is of "making little money" actually means "not enough money for me to retire in san francisco".
>>

it obviously can be because there are bigger teams than that without that much more reviews. so if it isn't enough for you, that doesn't mean it's not enough, but that your expenses are too high, whatever the reason for that is. and sure, you can say "idiotic assumptions". but since you don't share figures, then skill issue on your part to budget.
