*fucks your game up*
it's crazy that retards will still defend them
You have 2 dead boards for these dumb threads now, boards that exist for you and only you
>>744595208/vr/ is even worse than /v/ because shitposters realized there's nothing stopping them from taking over the entire catalog.
>>744595102"Muh accurate translation" retards are hypocrite enough to defend the fuck out of WD.Someone post the interview where WD wished they could get the rights to localize Idolm@ster so they could "fix all the creepyness"
>>744595712their balance changes were way worse than any of their translations desu
>>744595102the balance changes they made are awful and yes I understand their "translations" are not accurate at all, to the point where calling them "translations" in the first place is being generous, but there is kind of a stupid charm to them. I don't know if I would have enjoyed alundra as much if the story was told totally straight and it was just a depressing slog as everyone dies. I do think there's a balance to be made, or perhaps a toggle between a real translation and a shitty one, though that's asking a lot for a feature so few people would use
What's the most retarded gameplay change they've ever made?
My favorite part of the Lunar re-release is that you got a bunch of culture war secondaries that jumped in trying to "they woke-ified the translation" not realizing that they just took out most of the Working Designs pop culture references that weren't part of the original script and was mostly very hated except by a few back in the day.Separates the actual people with issues from the tourists.
>>744595102I liked their Alundra translation.Them tweaking enemy health was dumb though.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltUV7X_hnyg
>*releases that obscure area 11 game, that would otherwise never see the light of day in a million years, in the states*You had to be there I guess.
>>744595102What they do with translations is basically vandalism because they don't like the game they're working on.Same exact shit as the modern "woke" translators. What they do is not propaganda or anything, it's just a "hehe, ruined this game i don't like".
>>744599173Probably making it so you game over unless you put on a gas mask on all your characters when teleporting. Why? Because the fairy teleporting you farts a lot. Also, gold vortex (ok, this one was actually kind of funny). This was in Vay
>>744602536True. I doubt half the stuff they localized would have even gotten fan TLs if they didn't do it themselves. Of course, you can argue that it would have been better for these games to remain untranslated than to have been localized in the way they did. Pic unrelated
i'm honestly impressed this one somehow isn't fucked
>>744603023By the ps2 era they were on the ropes and didn't have the clout or money to do their usual hack jobs.Vic bragging on some forum that "we basically stopped changing the gameplay by 2000 and we barely did anything" as if that doesn't admit that they were actively fucking up their games for years prior, lol!
>>744595102Without these companies, these games would have never become known in the west. Doesn't excuse the butchering, but WD existing was better than not existing. For every game they did, 20 others went untranslated and are now obscure, Japanese-only titles. 95% of the Sega Saturn's library is basically that.
>>744603234I understand this view point and I can't really argue against it. What I am confused by though is why people won't retranslate more of those games to have proper translations. I think Silhouette Mirage is one of the only ones that has? We have patches that undo the balance changes (Unworking Designs) but it's just weird how we don't have more script fixes, yet something like SMT1 has three distinct translations at this point, one being official even.
>>744604467Well, changing some number values is a lot easier than redoing the entire script, I'd assume You have to really care enough about a game to go through all that, and more people care about something like SMT1 than something like... Albert Odyssey or whatever
I would much rather a game just stay untranslated than be raped forever by WD
>>744604829That makes a lot of sense, absolutely. I mean I get it, SMT1's one of my all time favorite games so I get why it's got three translations. I just know that I'd love to dive into a lot of the stuff on Sega CD or PS1 that WD localized but I just cannot handle their localizations, they're so shit.
>>744602536>>744602869>>744603234You niggers are insane. There are fan translations of games that are far more obscure than most of WD's catalogue.WD were not benevolent saviors who breathed life into some hopeless Japanese obscurities, they did great harm to many respectable B and C titles.Consider how many of their titles would have easily gotten fan translations by this point, but then translators decided against it because "WD already translated that game, we should work on something else". Consider how many people played the vandalized WD versions of games, and then based on that, decided that those games were shit and that the originals didn't deserve to be translated in the first place.Trying to paint WD in any sort of positive light is insane levels of cope.
>>744605171I was actually there at the time to know that it was Working Designs or literally not even knowing that these kinds of games existed.Thinking about what fan translators think about decades after the fact is not an argument. These games were playable in the 90s in the west because WD was a thing. They were not terrible for the time.
>>744601741dont talk out your assthe only thing people were worried about is censorship on the part where kyle crossdresses to get the drop on bandits and the hot springs scenes
>>744605419they WERE terrible because the script was changed so much that its not even the same story anymorebasically you didnt even play the gameyou played someone elses ripoffan official bootleg
>>744605419>These games were playable in the 90s in the westIf you bought a WD localization in the 90s then you never "played" that game to begin with. You played a fanfiction romhack that was designed and written by Vic Ireland.
>.The idea that fan translators "stepped aside" out of respect for WD is a romanticized view of the past. In reality most romhackers saw an official release and happily pivoted their limited free time to games that had zero chance of ever coming west.
>>744602536it's a bit of a monkey's paw situation. like yes, they released some weird shit and there's no way anyone else would have brought over such niche games. but at the same time... is it really the same game if the story is completely different now?
I played their shit when it came out and when I saw that WD logo in a magazine ad or on a game case I knew it would be decent at least. Fuck all the "literal translation" trannies.
>>744609638trannies are the ones supporting the butchering of games to "localize" them, THOUGH
>>744596687>though that's asking a lot for a feature so few people would useBrother it's just asking them to add a separate text file in to pull from if the option is selected. They don't even have to do anything extra, they just have to put the raw translation that their AI spits out into that text file and then they can rewrite it to their heart's content in another.
>>744595102I have always wondered what the original endings to Irom Storms Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were before the Working Design rewrite.>Japan ending Working Design: USA loses World War 2, but Japan becomes economically enslaved to them later through cheap electronics and trinkets.>Germany ending Working Design: While parading in India Hitler is asasinated, leading to mass infighting between Germanys leaders.
>>744610094the toggle itself is trivial yeah, I meant moreso doing two entirely different game scripts
>>744596687>defending WDNo.
>>744599173There was a PC Engine game they changed so much it broke the game and you actually can't finish it.
>>744595973And what was worse than both of those things. is they would scrub any mention of the original creators from the game (studio logos, names in the credits etc), and replace them with the working designs logos and say "directed by Victor Ireland" etc instead
>>744603234>Without these companies, these games would have never become known in the west.Rubbish. Someone else would have published them.
>>744605419>I was actually there at the time to know that it was Working Designs or literally not even knowing that these kinds of games existed. That's your own fault.I was there too and i knew about these games without working designs, because i did the bare minimum of being a video game fan and i read magazines.
thinking they know better about game design then treasure is unforgivable but I actually think they unironically improved magic knight rayearth and made is a pretty great little game, making the enemies hit way faster and harder takes what's a cute little game with great visuals but is mindlessly easy into an actually engaging experience, and giving voice acting for the games most unique feature (all 3 protagonists keep a diary recapping the plot, with different visual styles and different things they focus on in recapping previous events) is an improvement over the JPit's pretty telling it takes a fucking anime tie in game for their bullshit to actually improve a game instead of wreck them though
>>744595208the state of /vr/ is dreadful and mods dont do shit
>>744609638kys
>>744610809MKR is much better in Japanese. What on earth are you smoking? Also it was perfectly balanced. It didn't need changes. You obviously 1) don't know japanese and 2) haven't played the original version.
>>744610910the original game is literally a game for little girls, cutting literally all the cutscene voice acting is retarded since it's still on the disc anyway they just didn't wanna dub it but I can just watch the anime at that point
>clearly resent the source material and butcher the games>but also give them incredibly elaborate high quality box sets for the timeWhat the fuck was the plan here?
>>744595102That pink logo may as well be the mark of Satan. Literally worse than not being translated at all."People" who look up to and defend Vic Ireland are the biggest faggots ever. All these skinnyfat balding millennials who can't stop crying about muh whimsy and how a more accurate translation would be too le dry have Stockholm syndrome. I would take a dry translation over vandalised fanfiction any day of the fucking week.
>>744611234im a millennial and i fucking hate the changes they made and seeing them in a retrospective and the state of "TRANSlations" made me fully realized that localization has always been dogshit for yearsleast we have the unfaggoted changes versions of those games
>>744610724There was no company at the time doing what WD did. It was them or nothing.
>>744596687I've come to understand your position.Sometimes, Working Designs really was funny, or somehow a shitty college student voice actor was actually a little convincing sometimes. But, they went too far. If they were more skilled at flavoring the original Japanese translation, it would have worked superior.Sometimes, calling someone a "Retard" because they were called a "Baka" actually DOES fit.
>>744596687Does Alundra has a retranslation patch by chance? Even as a kid I thought the dialogue was bad. Having a dudebro surfer pothead was a bit much for a fantasy setting.
>>744612202There is a patch to restore enemy stats, but it doesn't look like there's a retranslation patch, at least for English.
>>744611839we would've gotten most of them in that late 90s early 2000s "oh this anime/jrpg shit is really kicking off after ff7, pokemon and dragon ball, what stuff can we bring over since the ps2 is backwards compatible?" boom. we got grandia nearly 3 years after the jp release
>>744612202like someone mentioned earlier, there's plenty of patches to undo their balance changes because that's easy number tweaking, but I'm not really aware of any proper translation patches to fix any of their games
>>744601741This never happened, in typical israeli fashion, you just invent some narrative to seethe at White people out of nowhere.
>>744595102working designs really doesn't give a fuck.just feast your ears to this english dubbed cutscene from exile 2 from the turbografx CDhttps://files.catbox.moe/2bhsek.mp4
>>744612684I know Silhouette Mirage on Saturn has a from-scratch translation patch.
>>744612273Even though "retard" has entered common vernacular again, it will still never be added into a game's script ever again Bit sad innit
>>744595102>I know we're anime characters in a fantasy world but we really just need to reference Rodney King and Bill Clinton.
>>744595712Don't lump us all in together. When Vic Ireland dies I'm going to laugh for days.
>>744611839Better nothing than them.
>>744610809There's a lot of translators, not even the older ones, who openly look down on the Japanese creators. Richard Honeywood for example is a condescending prick and has basically tried to paint Horii as a pedantic crazy person for objecting to name changes he tried to do. It's a very expat type of mindset they have where they're fine with making money from Japan and the Japanese but there's a sneering sort of disdain they have that permeates everything they say in regards to the country and its people and culture while also being unbelievably smug because they can speak/read/translate Japanese.
What did she mean by this?
>fags will complain about modern trannylators but then jump to working designs' defense in the same breathsome people on this planet really aren't sentient.
>>744617201I honestly can't find any examples of this. Usually the people that defend WD also eat up whatever modern translators shit out.
>>744595102aleeeeex ooooh alex
>>744602753WTF! that actually happens in U.S vay?I use to love that game as a child but I never finished it
>>744617187Did she really say that? I suspect it is a Dejap "Arche fucks like a tiger" situation.
>>744603234sadly yeah you're right and I still enjoyed them because I was ignorant of all of this as a child but finding out how badly they butchered the games as a adult is shocking, same when I found out 7th saga difficulty was absurdly bumped up for the U.S version.
>>744605171yeah but by this point I wouldn't be interested in playing any of the games since they aged poorly so I'm happy I got to enjoy them when they were relevant in the late 90'sowning a sega cd in the 90's as a kid was a magical time
>>744613382They say retard and retarded in GTA
>>744617201It makes sense once you realize they're just doing Old Good, New Bad.
>>744610724Square had trouble getting fucking Final Fantasy published in the west until they partnered with a western company to do it for them. WD never swooped in like a vampire in the night to steal away all these valuable licensing opportunities from the dozens of well-meaning publishers that totally would have made faithful localizations for all those obscure Saturn games. They existed to fill ahole in the market. I hate what they did to the games they published too, but that was just how it fucking was. Our packages took eight weeks to deliver because the US Post Office was the only game in town, and our lesser-known JRPGs were butchered because Working Designs was the only company that wanted to touch them. Life isn't fair, buy an umbrella.
I still think about the hard cover Lunar instruction book which at the back had a strategy guide for the early game. There is a note that says Alex and Luna fucked at the end of a cutscene.
>>744617201Are we just making shit up now?
>>744611185to make money
