i want to lean back and play the first 3 games on controller so pc versions are out

Don't play the PS2 or GC versions. They are too downgraded to have anything special about them.

I've heard the PS3 ports for 1-3 have all the content but that they run poorly on the ps3 itself. But they might be ok in the emulator.

There's a mod for PC that adds gamepad support. It plays just like the Xbox version with it. Check PCGamingWIki
