3 was widely regarded as the worst until 4 came along. Only contrarians hate 2, but 1 is still hailed as the best. I'm a 2 enjoyer myself but I think it has less mass appeal than 1 so it probably gets less of a nintendo bonus for it.

My brother in Christ, where did you think the Metroid in Metroidvania came from?
>>
>>744599404
Metroid Prime has become worse with each passing game
>>
>>744600093
I dunno how that's possible, because the Phazon Mines, Chozo Ghosts, and artifact hunt actively drag Prime 1 down and ruin it up until Ridley has to come along to fix it.
>>
I just tried this on an emulator after having never played a Metroid game before. Made it to the Phazon Mines before finally dropping it for all of the reasons you said. The exploration, puzzles and good feeling on getting a power-up were alright, but the constant backtracking and map full of hallways you navigate through for 20 minutes just to do so were too much. Mightve been fun on the GameCube when I was 9 and had nothing to compare it to, but it didn't age well.

>Samus moves like shit, platforming feels terrible
>Backtracking everywhere
>An endgame relic hunt
>Every encounter later on revolves around cycling through your 4 fucking beams and 4 fucking visors to figure out the exact weakness of something

It just feels bad to play and it's padded out with chores to make it take longer. The only positive thing I have to say about the experience is that the music is great and that's it. It felt like a total joke after experiencing the usual 2D games which were all fantastic.

I also agree with this. I think the map is just fucking useless at indicating which parts lead to other sections. The elevators were labeled but they did a terrible job of showing you what other area of the map it sends you to.
>>
Prime was "super if he 3D" but they didn't know how to make the backtracking of super work. The solution was mandatory backtracking by having the player run into obstacles that need a power up on the exact opposite side of the map. While Super did have backtracking it also had convenient shortcuts everywhere. Prime 2 fixes this problem though with how many elevators there are.

that's something you likely wont notice in your first playthrough but the way you go back and forth you can actually optimize the majority of upgrade pickups. 100%ing Prime with optimized pickups is surprisingly smooth.

This your first Metroid game? Every single one of them has backtracking. That's one of the major parts of the franchise's identity alongside Samus, Metroids, and Ridley. I'm guessing you picked Prime as your target because it's also the first 3D one and the board's well-known reputation for shitting on it purely because it's 3D.

If Prime 2 allowed me to skip the constant portal cutscenes it would be fine but it doesn't because they're necessary loading screens. There-in lies the issue, Dark World is a fun mechanic but with disc consoles not very viable. "Air is lava" is a dogshit mechanic though, especially in a series where exploration is core gameplay. Fuck that shit.
>>
>>744601139
Should be understood that before this you had Super Metroid and SotN which were even worse with their overworld maps. In this context Prime 1s map is excellent. After Prime 1 they had no excuse thoughbait.

>>744601925
The dark world sapping away at your health is only noticeable in 3 sections in my opinion. Before you get the dark suit, the boost guardian, and the quadraxis fight. The first one is because you're right at the start of the game, your health is low and the hp drain is accelerated compared to what you'll actually deal with for a majority of the game. The other two are because you're effectively put on a timer for beating the bosses. I don't think it's a bad idea to put sections in Metroid where you have to navigate rooms or deal with enemies while your health is draining, otherwise the suit upgrades are really only defense ups.
>>
Prime 4 unironically had a better map layout.

Jfc, there's NOTHING TO FIGURE OUT. Each enemy weak to a certain thing appears in the place their weakness is introduced, unless you have a stroke each time you enter a new area or reenter an old one, you should have literally zero problem remembering the very few types of enemies that require specific visors and/or shot types. If this is the cognitive level of MP haters then it's no wonder this board is on the decline.

Remove the hard color-coded enemies weaknesses and give Samus and the enemies more mobility.
>>
>>744598209
Because the backtracking was good. The environment aesthetic and music were amazing and you weren't constantly backtracking to the same areas over and over again until late in the game for the artifact hunt. Most of the time, you were railroaded into specific rooms and regions and told where to go. You were meant to take your time exploring every room and region for collectables and hidden secrets while scanning everything (and if you hate scanning you hate immersion and are a fucking faggot)

...I could've sworn that you could've "zoomed in" on the hexagon hive things and gotten the actual 3D models of the locations showing up instead when I played the GC version...
>>
I played the game recently on emulator and I don't have the gripes the zoomers have about backtracking since I signed up for it when I decided to play Metroid, but Prime does have a big problem.
The movement sucks.
Your best speed up option is Boost Ball and that's as effective of a speed-up as rolling in OoT and Spring Ball is not a thing in this game; Space Jump is just a double jump in here; Wall Jumping is not a thing at all; the only thing that gives you momentum is a trick that can only be used in very specific scenarios and takes too long to set up to be worth it; and no Screw Attack either.
Compare this with 2D Metroids where backtracking is part of the adventure but the movement tools that you get and learn of as you progress combined with your knowledge of the areas means you can blaze through those in no time.
In Prime, a skilled enough player will clear the same area at different points in progression at almost the same speed.
It's things like these that make me wonder if the series would have been better off mechanically as a TPS, because while FPS adds a lot to the immersion factor, it's really limiting mechanically.
>>
>>744606887
>A Level Map
maybe
>>
>>744606983
Oh also, unlike the 2D Metroids, once you use the correct weapon to open a door, it doesn't get converted to a blue door from that point on, which means you gotta change to that weapon every time you want to open that door.
It's not a dealbreaker but it is an unnecessary bother you need to deal with.

>>744606983
They tried TPS with Other M, it sucked. I think Prime 1 was just a product of its time. Companies were barely transitioning into modern 3D with the new control schemes (analog thumbsticks) and Nintendo skipped Metroid 64 due to not knowing what to do with the 3D transition for the series. So they outsourced development to Americans with Retro (who didnt have experience in FPS development until after they had to kick out the original CEO fucking everything up but thats another story for another day) and they just had to figure things out in a short amount of time. They nailed the 3D transition but movement was clearly not a priority at the time since it was already a struggle trying to piece everything else in the game (the visors in particular were a headache). So we ended up with a very polished FPS game but with slow movement as a result. Halo CE came out the same time as well and also had slow movement and from there that just caught on to many FPS after Quake, which in turn gave birth to the modern military FPS. MP2 and MP3 were heavily influenced by Halo so they stuck with the slower movement.
>>
>>744605192
The point is that it isn't fun to cycle through your options to check for the weakness. Similar to Samus' general movement in the game, swapping your beams and visors is also slow. I never once felt that Samus' kit was slow or unresponsive in the 2D games, but it's something I consistently felt playing Prime. I also don't believe Samus even needs that many different swappable tools when they could just be combined into one beam. You know, like the good Metroid games.
>>744606983
This is precisely why people complain about the backtracking even though the series is known for it. Samus is fucking slow in this game and it leads to unsatisfying exploration as you finish up loose ends in the later half.
>>
>>744607485
Other M was also locked to a fucking NES controller because the director thought it would be fun.
It can work, it just needs a proper fucking control scheme.
>>
>>744607238
Oh that would definitely help a lot but it's not a complete fix
>>744607485
Other M's controls suck by design because Sakamoto went full retard and insisted this TPS game had to be played with the wiimote only and pretended the Classic Controller did not exist
I'm sure if they tried to have another go at it without intentionally crippling themselves, it would turn out much better

>>
>>744607480

>>
>>744607684
>because Sakamoto went full retard and insisted this TPS game had to be played with the wiimote only and pretended the Classic Controller did not exist
That was Nintendo policy at the time for the console, not an exclusive Sakamoto decision. They needed to use the Wiimote because every Wii came with one while not everyone had a Classic controller. Then for some reason Sakamoto cut out the nunchuk controls for some retarded reason, can't remember but I think it was because he wanted to make it extremely accessible and intuitive for anyone new to the series by limiting the button options which was a bad idea.
>>
>>744607485

>>744607907

It's funny to me that you actually believe this.

It's no Super Metroid, but it was arguably the best game the Cube ever had.

There's a ton of stuff (mainly expansions and most importantly, Chozo artifacts) to grab between those backtracking sections. The litmus test to see if you are shit at the game is that you must have 11 or 12 artifacts before you leave Phazon Mines for good, if you have 10 or less you're shit at the game

I don't even like trannies but it's just a fact that they've done more creatively than the average person who thinks about them and brings them up constantly in threads. It's easier to explain when you realize that a lot of trannies are autists who got groomed, so it's a venn diagram between autist accomplishments and tranny accomplishments with a lot of overlap in the middle.

op here, this is the exact part im at that frustrated me to post this thread. im gonna try and finish the game tho

Yeah its fucking bullshit and the devs knew it because getting to the bottom of the frigate makes the map ping you the location for the gravity suit.

Only part that annoys me about that level is it's like the only one that has only one entrance, even when you get to the end you still have to go all the way back if I remember right or it was just a long walk to any elevator even if it did have another entrance. It was a really cool level besides that.

Could've fooled me with how much you like to suck their dicks.

I was just like the OP at one point before I understood the gameplay loop of Metriod games.

I just choose not to have as black and white a view on the subject as you plus I like watching people seethe whether it's trannies or people like you who make tranny seethe their entire personality.

I lost.

The problem with that is
>going down an area that is hard to navigate where you'll get an ability at the bottom to make it a breeze

Is a pretty common thing in video games. Its totally normal to expect to get the g suit at the bottom of the ship, then be able to smoothly hop out.

>No fastravel
Good. You retards are the reason exploration in Souls games sucks now. It's much better to have a nicely interconnected world, than to let you warp anywhere at anytime.
>>

>holy shit this game has a lot of backtracking in huge maps. no fast travel.
This is the basis of Metroidvanias they're boring.

There's an art to making backtracking tolerable and even enjoyable at times. Fast travel is the obvious solution, but it comes with some less noticeable drawbacks like removing the difficulty or making the game world less memorable. Metroid games usually do a good job of making backtracking tolerable by sprinkling optional upgrades around the map for you to collect once you have a new ability. It helps that the Prime trilogy in particular has very memorable room design thanks to Retro's environmental artists and the 3D design space, so it's not as easy to get lost once you've walked through an area enough times. Funnily enough, I found Prime 3's gunship travel more tedious than Prime 1 and 2's backtracking on foot and I think that has to do with robbing control from the player. In the first two Prime games you can make your own mental route through the interconnected world in your head so that your backtracking is more efficient. In Prime 3 all you do is click through a slow map menu and wait through some load screens before being warped into the segmented area you need to go to. I still really like Prime 3, but the incorporation of the gunship really brings down the whole experience and emphasizes the difference between good and bad backtracking.

Or maybe stop padding out the game with unnecessary filler?

There is no such thing as a good 2D Metroid game.

There's only one way to do backtracking well, the level design changes.

>exploration
There's that meme again. Exploration is fucking boring. If you want sightseeing there's walking simulators for that you fucking retard.
>>
>>744601139
the PAL release and every version after the original NTSC version added a compass to the map screen which lets you easily track where every elevator leads
>>
you spend half the game fighting it's controls. It's amazing how much easier the remaster is now that you can fix it's shit control scheme.
>>
>>744621895
the controls are perfect for the original though, dual stick aiming adds nothing of value to Prime

you're retarded lmao.
I beat this shit when I was 12
