Aren’t they more fun designs than generic humans?
Have there been any new scrimblo characters in the last five years?

False premise. Nobody hates quirky mascots in platformer games, most people like cute things in general. What gets shit on is the trend to just make the same exact game that already exists, but add in a few unnecessary movement mechanics and switch out one scrimblo for an interchangeable one. Klonoa, Pandemonium and Tomba are distinct enough in art atyle and structure that you don't notice the similarities. Crash Bandicoot still gets ripoffs to this day that do nothing new with the formula. Do we even have any "Croc-likes" to speak of? I'd say he's a well-regarded character, you'd have to be pretty cynical to hate him or the little fuzzy dudes he saves. The game less so, but that's really just because of the controls. Still, it was unique for the time.

Every single JRPG back in the genre's golden age had a cute little mascot sidekick in the party.

Neurotypical people can only relate to human characters.
