PC hardware, BTFO'd the PS2 and Gamecube by a large margin. So did the 360 that came after it also.

Better hardware, internal storage, built-in online that just worked, lots of amazing AA games, all the SEGA games that were in development when the DC died became Xbox games, giving it an amazing line-up at launch.

Simply the fact that you didn't need memory cards or worry about memory at all made it significantly better over the average PS2 experience.
