I went to an arcade a year or two ago, and it was all enlarged mobile games. The closest thing they had to a fightan game was the mobile game version of Injustice that dispenses cards or some shit. Fucking tragic. Do people actually go for all of that? I can understand popping some quarters for some games you don't want to buy at home, but for some f2p mobile shlock? Fuck outta here.

I went down to the shore for a few days and there was an arcade that advertised itself as being the biggest in the country.98% of the "games" were coin-shooters, mobile games on big screens, and rail shooters.I just spent my credits on Guitar Hero Arcade and Stepmaniax.
>>744615846where was that koa?
>>744612072Not candy cabs no, my local arcade was all unique cabinets. It had a Die Hard machine and a House of the Dead machine. It was overrated, honestly. Having to pump in multiple quarters, screaming kids running around, food and human waste all over the place, attract music blaring from every machine. I still have nostalgia for the excitement of walking into the place but it's probably the worst place to play a video game. After this came the "gameplex" which was much better. In a gameplex you payed an hourly fee and they had multiple big comfy couches and every console you can imagine already hooked up. You went to the front desk and picked a game from their library. It was great for pick-up games with randoms. Could get a Halo 2 lan party going without having to drag heavy tube TV's, Xbox's and cables around. Arcades are obsolete now and even if they came back I'm not pumping quarters into a game just to play it like some boomer slot machine addict.
>>744616246I forget. I was a child. It was probably somewhere in New England because I think I was driving out east to visit family. I think they had Street Fighter 2, the Simpsons (or was it TMNT?) and some sort of rock band licensed pinball.

I still go to one in Girard OH when I'm there. It's called Past Times. Basically just like a big warehouse type building filled with rows of old game cabinets from different eras. Like really old stuff that's just on display, a ton of pinball machines, and newer stuff like guitar hero even. You pay about twenty bucks and then just get a wristband for the day and they've got a concession stand with food and drinks. It's pretty nice.
>>744612072I found out a few days ago that today's arcade hardware is literally just PCs running Windows, and you can basically run even modern arcade games on your PC with tools like Teknoparrot. However, I know absolutely nothing of today's arcade games. And most of them get ported to PC or consoles anyway, it seems. What are some arcade exclusive games that are worth playing?
Lionizing arcades is so fucking weird. It's like being black and looking back fondly on slavery. Mork and latinx uncs need to get psychiatric treatment.
Why do people here nostalgiabait over arcades so much? They were proto-gacha.
>>744622571>>744622518They were another "third place" for people before the internet became everyone's "third place." You got to be around your peers playing games together. >>744622165>Anon with an informative and fully verifiable post I expected much worse but this seems to be a cool place. Their game list is also pretty impressive: https://www.arcade-museum.com/members/detail/Past-Times-Arcade-504534/gamesEven the menu looks affordable and paying $20 for a day's worth of entertainment is really not much. The "we do have foldable step stools available at the counter" part of the FAQ made me laugh for some reason.
>>744625297Yeah it's a fun place to spend an evening. The $20 door price isn't bad considering all the games are free and people seem to use the honor system as far as taking turns goes so there aren't any hall monitors types going around enforcing rules are anything like that. They supposedly have the largest pinball machine collection or something like that because there was a plaque on the wall about it and they sell old pinballs at the counter. I bought one for a dollar.

>>744612072Fighting games are the reason arcades died. Before 1991 (SF2's release) you could walk into an arcade and there'd be about 10 different genres of games to play. You could spent all afternoon in an arcade and have so many different gameplay experiences, it was fantastic. Then SF2 came out and every arcade was lined wall to wall with shitty fighting games, and maybe a couple of racers. This is why people stopped going. Nobody gives a shit about fighting games. You could just stay home and play more interesting games on your snes/megadrive/pc.

When I was a wee lad out and about I'd always gravitate to the nearest arcade. There was one old dusty place at a seaside town nearby with TMNT in it. Even on vacation to Florida there was one in the hotel lobby with MK4 that just released or the Simpsons Arcade game. Also found my way to another while there and watched some older kid play Marvel vs Capcom then I found yet another one at a mini golf place with MK2. Found F-Zero GX at one abroad too. Sad to see them disappear from everywhere but bowling alleys or those big indoor family entertainment and eating complexes.

>>744612072I've experienced a superior modern version of it. I go to a place called "antics" I don't exactly know how to classify it. They have modern Xboxs and PCs along with retro Nintendo 64s all the way down to almost archaic arcade games, all in a comfy booth where they serve you tasty pizza while you play. I wish I took pics, it's a lot more comfy than OPs pic.
>>744627731What's the difference from let's say.. a wendy's or a highschool.
The Free-to-play system employed by 'arcades' nowadays, mostly in the west, changes the dynamic too much.No money at stake, infinite credits, kids hogging the machine. It's just for casual tourist types whilst pandering to people who actually went to the arcades a lot back in the day. That's why the fighting games are relegated to 'wallpaper' status because they get less attention than racers and other machines. You won't see hardcores there by chance on a random weekday, probably rare on a weekend too, especially when they have to travel and the entry fee is high, just for a 'maybe' that competition will be there. If you can arrange with a group, you'd go to a friends house instead and play on console or emu (cheaper too).
Beat'um ups > Fighting slop
>>744612072in the 90s, there was an arcade in downtown Cleveland's flats that my parents used to take me to, called Power Play and it was absolutely phenomenal. it was in the basement of an old powerplant and by far the best arcade i've ever been to. tekken tag, mocap boxing, crazy taxi, etc. upstairs had a comfy brewery and an improv comedy club nextdoor in the basement too. my dad would drink at the bar while i killed whatever bad guys there were in the aerosmith arcade game. it makes me sad how much the world has changed. zoomies never stood a chance.
>>744627994it did cause people to rage and assault each other since they were next to each other back in the actual heyday of it.the early fighting game shit was loaded with blacks, asians, and mexicans which made it even more funny since even after arcades started fading you still had guys notorious for punching people in the face show up to events.

>>744631039I settled and built a mame-cade cabinet. It's not perfect, but it is fun enough for me. I might plan to build a light gun and a driving mamecade cabinet someday too. That said you have to realize that home arcades suck. They don't bring you the "real" experience of going to an arcade and putting in quarters and playing games with your friends and other kids on a Saturday night. At best you have a friend adult friends over and play a game or two as a talking piece before going back to doomscrolling. You're really chasing the past when you were a kid, of a time when you were happier and carefree. That is something you can never get back or replicate. It is a bygone era that time has marched on from. It is the same as boomers buying those retro record players thinking it will make their empty lives more meaningful.

>>744631039I'm gonna give you the secretAll you need to get an authentic arcade experience is a good, large control panel and a good display. You can build your own panel out of wood, you can go to alibaba and spend $300 or so on a chewlix panel, you can just find a big arcade stick and use that too. Don't put it on your lap though, put it on a table. For the display, something nice and big. The smaller it is, the closer it should be to your face. It doesn't have to be a fancy CRT.You don't need real hardware. You don't need a full cabinet. Just a desk, a big controller and a screen. That's it.
>>744630778You don't understand. It can never be the same without the blatant overcharging for every little thing, ridiculously sticky floors, unnecessarily loud sounds coming from every direction all the time, and being forced to share your favourite machine with some random asshole kid.And no, I'm not being sarcastic, arcades were only so magical because they weren't a perfect way to play the games.Buying your own cabinet to play is the exact kind of pointless, performative shit that misunderstands the entire experience. Oh, you can buy movies and watch it on a big screen tv while eating popcorn, that's totally the same as going to the cinema!
