It's not even about dropping physical. A bunch of chain stores just flat out stopped stocking Xbox products already. Too much of a liability because they only have so many locked display cases and """certain demographics""" would steal that shit by the truckload.

Wii, DSi, 3DS, and Wii U servers for downloads tied to your account/system are all still available. 20 years later and I could still re-download Super Mario 64 onto my launch Wii. You're fear mongering and being a disingenuous shitter.

How young are you dipshits? This is literally Xbox's exact approach to the Xbox One, for which they were eviscerated upon reveal and backpedaled immediately...for a bit. Xbox is absolutely doing this and this whole "disc to digital" shit they're planning is part of it.
>>
>>744616462
Serious question, when do you think that will happen? The Wii still allows you to re-download games 20 years later, and that was a 480p console that was not future-proofed at all. We're looking at 30 years MINIMUM, likely 50 or more years until Switch 2 stops allowing re-downloading of software. Most of us here will be 80 years old at that time. Also, Switch and Switch 2 use flash memory that has a life span of about 20-30 years, anyway, so full physical ironically won't last that long regardless.
In the meantime however, GKCs are infinitely better than being locked to Sony's online store with dynamic pricing and no way to share, loan, sell, or gift your used games.
If your only response to this is to throw insults, then I accept your full concession.
>>
>>744616462
While I would normally agree with you and I don't like GKCs any more than anyone else does, it seems unlikely Nintendo will shut down service for them in like decades. The Wii storefront is still active, you can still download purchased games to Wiis. Same with the 3DS storefront, and Pokemon's Bank service, while officially expired, hasn't actually ended and people can still use it.

So this won't be a problem for like 20 years. There's other reasons to not like GKCs that are more prominent, like being physical carts but still requiring a digital download, using up microSD card space that could just be on the game cart instead.
>>
>>744616667
That's because GKCs are a pro consumer pushback to the digital overtake while dropping physical entirely is embracing the anticonsumer digitak overtake.
>>
>>744616787
>How young are you dipshits?
Older than you.
>This is literally Xbox's exact approach to the Xbox One, for which they were eviscerated upon reveal and backpedaled
No it isn't. That was regarding an always online approach which is a completely different topic than what media format you decide to publish.
>Xbox is absolutely doing this and this whole "disc to digital" shit they're planning is part of it
Then they won't be capitalizing on Sony's massive fuckup and I'll be slightly disappointed they passed up on their golden opportunity.
>>
>>744616667
>snoyiggers have literally been freaking out on sony over the cancelation of discs
Snoys are freaking out on people attacking their friends at sony, not the cancellation of discs. I've seen so many of them defend sony by bringing up the manipulated digital data where sony considers free downloads, demos and microtransaction as digital purchases
>>
>>744616856
Not that retard but how do we know these games won't be playable in a future platform? If the next nintendo console can play S1 and S2 games then these games will last even longer than 30 years
>>
I should be happy, because gaming should be better without sony and Microsoft who have done nothing but make the industry worse, but Nintendo needs competition.
It's sad that Sony and Microsoft just can't be bothered to even try any more

Kys shill.
>>
>>744620670
Well, yeah. Anyone who isn't a zoomer or millenial can tell you that the PS3 and 360 era of games was a wasteland of mindless waggleshit and brown and grey military shooters.
>>
Kino, Playstation sections were just filled with madden, 2k, Fifa and yearly slop anyways with a ton of prepaid cards for the digital store.
>>
>>744620794
That era had a lot of good games if you didn't just stick to the waggle and ball and gun shit. Even some of the shooters were pretty good like Vanquish and Just Cause 2.
>>
>>744620571
Selling was the solution, not the problem. And it is a right of ownership. The problem was my PS4 came with TLOU1 remastered. I solved that problem by selling it still in the shrinkwrap.
>>
>>744620778
then it's a useless feature. I'd rather games never be resellable, if it means they have the features of a digital PC game. IE never being purposedly left behind and unplayable, and if problems do arise, you're allowed to fix them.

Like there are PC games from 2001 that can still be played on modern PCs. If you bought, oh say, Deus Ex back in 2001, you can STILL play it today. A few minor bugs here and there, but that's what community fixes are for.Infact you have multiple flavors you can choose from, from GMDX to Revision.

Meanwhile, if I'm a Nintendo fan and I want to play Paper Mario TTYD on the switch, my only option is to play the gay demaster. I can't put my gamecube disk into the switch 2, and I can't rip the rom and put it in my switch 2 either. And I'm not holding out hope that they'll put it on NSO, which will just be a glorified rental.

>>
>>744620919
>That era had a lot of good games
Not nearly as one may think; gen 7 was a disaster for gaming, games became shallow as fuck after it was fractured by retarded audiences falling for memes calling Wii childish and Kutaragi advocating to cinematic experiences going in the polar opposite direction from Wii negating gameplay being the core value of... a videogame. Everyone in the middle that aligned with PS360 console ended up selling smoke; mature games for mature audiences, that were shallow as fuck and almost no replayable beyond their bulk

It wasn't even a leak, nintendo already offered SDXC carts smaller than 64GB on launch, which is what stuff like azuma used.
What they are doing now is allowing switch 1 nand to be used on switch 2 cart cases, which they didn't before, and it's also far cheaper due to not being SDXC.
This is also likely why stuff like the bomberman collection can come in fully in cart for the switch 2, the new sw2 minimum cart size is now 1GB.

>>744621997
>See? Attachment can happen if the game is shitty
Except it's a good game. Not sure why you're hating on it so much.

That's all that matters for ownership.

There isnt a serious display for Playstation or xbox in my local Walmart and there hasn't been for years. This was already reality that's why theyre dropping physical.

There's bigger displays for PC gaming parts where I live at Walmart over the combined displays for xbox and ps5. There isnt even a real "gaming aisle", it's just a few shelves for Nintendo and like 2 spots for a handful of sports games for the others.

Sports stuff being the lions share of consoles was a thing even in the 90's. EA shelled out an insane amount of money at the time to secure the exclusive license for NFL games because the competition 2K was putting out was proving to be enough to float the Dreamcast's entire sales even in the face of Sega giving up on it early, and that's not getting into the shit like Sports Talk Football where Sega was positioning the tech and sampling in their football games as the #2 reason to buy a Genesis behind Sonic, if it weren't for that shit Sega would have been annihilated by Nintendo in the west. Anyone complaining about normies determining what games move consoles in the 7th gen on is an idiot who wasn't paying attention.

I think the issue is that the PSX and PS2 had room for everyone. Tons of sports games but also quite a bit of unique European games and weird Japanese releases. Most of the AA market got wiped out by the Xbox 360.

In the case of some games, they really do need the SSD reading speeds because they were specifically designed around SSD usage if they were on PS5/XSX and on PS4/Xbone. For those, a GKC is understandable.

If it's also on PS4(and especially the games that are also on Switch 1 on cart) then it's plain greed.

It's completely up to the devs which card they use, if you want to complain, complain to the people that are too cheap to spend the extra manufacturing cost to use larger storage game cards. >you download a steam game on your computer

>which game can you still play

Well, I can still play my steam game for about 100 years thanks to making backups. Goldberg/steamless ensure that I don't need the service to keep playing it, assuming I didn't just download a GOG installer, also assuming the game even had steamworks DRM in the first place. Valve's work on linux and arch and proton ensure that windows isn't even necessary. I can also just pirate any copy of windows I want, and modify them for best compatibility.

My switch 2 cart dies due to low quality, like 3DS cartridges, and Nintendo randomly decides that I need to rebuy it again for the switch 3 or switch 4. If I'm a good goy, they'll let me play it after paying 30 dollars for upgrades that should've been free. Also, I'm not allowed to play the game on non-nintendo hardware.

Hmmmm......

I really like how this is entirely ignoring 90% of modern games at the very least have patches and updates of some kind after release, nevermind DLCs, and this was already pretty common on older console systems like the Switch 1 or Playstation Vita.
I already have a good thirty Switch2 games and none of them remained in their original firmware version because of bugs that had to be fixed or content that were added afterwards.
If you want to keep a console game "forever" (until the day you die) you make a digital backup after cracking open the console system itself, obsessing over physicals as an archived unit is utterly retarded.

And again, I do like nobody ever address the elephant in the room about the untold number of modern games having firmware updates (regardless you get the game in physical or digitally) but doom about Nintendo's download servers solely because of the key cards. Lies of P is fully physical on Switch 2 for instance but you'd still have to download the day-1 patch to get the extra "Balanced" graphic option alongside of some fixes. But why do they have to be different? If Nintendo really wanted to be pro-consumer, then imagine this:

>GKC, but downloads do NOT require you to keep the cart in the system
>you can give the cart to a hundred people, and all of them can play the game at the same time, without needing family share
>license verification isn't constantly enforced

It would essentially be a GOG installer that can be used infinitely. Once you download an installer, it no longer needs ID verification. If someone dropped a GOG installer into this thread, every single person could download it and play it.

Ownership of plastic, not the game, which you have no control over, can't even access the files, Nintendo locks you out as hard as they possibly can.

You're arguing against massive cognitive dissonance. They totally own the game, but also the corporation has to lock them out from the game they totally own because emulation and being able to do what you want with the game they totally own is evil, please think of the poor nintendo.

Even if that were true the WiiU's library was not the reason it failed. The WiiU had actually had a decent library but just like the Switch 2 it didn't do enough to set itself apart and just seemed like more of the same which people have already been accustomed to. The question that kept on being asked back then was "why would I buy a WiiU when I have a Wii?" much like how people say the same for the switch and switch 2 today.

Yes, I am. My physical cartridge of Super Mario 64 is not at odds with my digital rom of Super Mario 64. Both are allowed to exist, and Nintendo still gets their money for my copy. However, this was only possible by circumventing the copy protection and latent DRM on the hardware, but now that I have done that crucial step, I now reap the benefits of both physical and digital. So let me ask again: why can't Nintendo, or Sony, or Microsoft, allow their games to exist without DRM and copy protection?

The only physical that matters is drm free physical on pc as it has zero downsides, consolecucks need to learn their place and stay in their shitpit instead of trying to get uppity over things they clearly don't understand and are coping over. If people want to make an argument over pc rarely having drm free physical (because it's inconvenient, more expensive, and nobody cares about physical anymore even on console besides scalpers and autismos), they can do that, but arguing in favor of corpo controlled console physical is retarded and for poor people deluding themselves.

Takes the exact same amount of time to mod more modern games. Like FTL, or Terraria, or for the more graphically intensive titles like Supreme Commander. Really, I can't imagine needing to troubleshoot a game for hours on end. It's literally click and go.
