"Spyro" in Skylanders is actually just a generic dragon character re-colored purple and yellow.

I honestly see the logic of making Spyro a Skylanders character to help sell the toyline but I have to wonder if even Skylanders fans think it was a good call or not in the long term
The only things from Spyro's series that made it in Skylanders other than himself is Cynder, Sparx (as a magic item), and Malefor (who never shows up in-game)
No Ripto, Hunter, Elora, etc even though they could've easily been revamped for the series
Odds are Skylanders would've done just as well if Spyro wasn't there

They did plan to put Hunter in Giants but the Spyro redesign backlash made them not go through with it.

I don't think it even made it to the concept art phase, it was probably a suggested idea that didn't go further then that
