SKG hasn't stopped, it just wasn't ambitious enough in properly adapting software and strengthening associated consumer protections to the reality of the 21st century, because dropped support is an issue that plagues a lot of software due to copyright not respecting necessary maintenance and services.

There is nothing preventing a company from pushing an update to disable functionality (in part or in full) of a game that would have continued functioning without them. Companies use the excuse of selling you as a game as a license, general consumer ignorance and illegal EULAs to trample on the rights that they are forced to give you by law. They are selling you items as one-time-purchases, but treating it as a service that they can terminate at any time. This is already becoming a problem in software and hardware aside from just games.
