One of the best racing games on the PS2 was made from scratch in 10 months.
>>744644712it's pretty bare bones though
Yes, and?
Best is a stretch but it is a good game.
>Yes, and?
>>744644712why did ps2 only get 1 ridge racer
>>744645046>platinumdunce
>>744644712Wtf? I had no idea. And it's the best one in the series imo>The development was notoriously rushed and chaotic. The team, consisting of about 55 members, faced significant challenges because Sony's PlayStation 2 development tools were incomplete during production. The schedule changed frequently because Namco did not know the exact launch date of the console. At the Tokyo Game Show in September 1999, Namco initially stated the game would not be ready for launch, only to reverse that decision a month later and commit to the March 2000 release date.>>744644807For an arcade game, or the PS2 port of it, not really honestly. It takes a while to totally beat this game on hard, and there's a lot of weird bonus content they didn't have to add but they did anyway.
I remember playing a demo of it as a kid and not caring for it. RR1, I played the other year, and it was great. I then played R4, which was mediocre spectacle with a simplified driving model and it was way too easy even on the hard difficulty. RR5 is probably even worse.
>>744644712so where do I start with Ridge Racer?
>>744644712One good look at the Bethesda protest will explain why modern devs are incapable of this (including Jap ones).
Bespoke engine and all, on previously unexplored hardware.
>>744644712What makes the game so good then?
>>744646074no idea this thread is about bemoaning the modern le industry
>>744645625oh no! anyway........
>>744645787The first one.
>>744645787RR1 if you want the raw way, RRT4 if you wanna start with the absolute pinnacle knowing everything else is gonna come short in some way to it, RR/RR2 on PSP if you wanna get an overall taste/greatest hits album of the whole series.I would also recommend following either of these three progressions to get a different taste of each "era" of the series.>Retro: Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Revolution, Rave Racer (if you have the means)>GP focused: Rage Racer, Ridge Racer Type 4, Ridge Racer V>Nitrous era: Ridge Racer PSP, Ridge Racer 2 PSP, Ridge Racer 7 (it's essentially Ridge Racer 6 but missing a few little bits of content so you can swap between whichever is more convenient but I prefer 7)
>>744646074Ridge Racer V is one of the more difficult games in the series for one. It also manages to have a fairly distinct grungier aesthetic identity of its own which, following Type 4's act in which was still fairly recent is no small feat. Also it has one of the most fun uberboss duels in the series and unlocking new engines as well as car upgrades was cool and I wish it was followed up in later games.
everything just keeps getting shittier huh
I can forgive unbound just because it gave us wreckfest.
