I have come to understand that much of modern consumer media—especially video games—functions as a Skinner box, engineered to reinforce habitual engagement through carefully tuned reward schedules. Artistic and intellectual value are often subordinated to behavioral optimization and operant conditioning. Recognizing this design philosophy has led me to stop purchasing and consuming new media altogether. My new hobby is having sex, largely because it's one of the few experiences corporations haven't yet figured out how to repackage as a live service with microtransactions.
