In retrospect, setting your entire game in a frozen wasteland was pretty ballsy. Sure there's some greenery and forests but a huge chunk of the landscape is just mountains and ice. I can't really think of another game off the top of my head that attempted this.
>In retrospect, setting your entire game in a frozen wastelandI palyed around 20 hours of skyrim until I got bored of it and it was not a frozen wasteland at all.
>>744650998SSX did something similar.
>>744650998its the worst thing about it, the location.thank fuck for mods to fix the depression
It also really helps sell the idea of a world with thousands of years of history, civilisation rising and falling, different races and cultures ruling and migrating. Ruins preserved by the cold for millenia, ancient magic keeping torches burning, it's unafraid to be fantasy.
There's no self-aware irony poisoned sarcasm like you see in a lot of western fantasy, it's a silly game at times but it always takes itself seriously and earnestly.
From a distance it can seem generic, but you can tell when someone had an idea and made it their business to put it in the game, there's a lot of little things that make the game feel alive, bigger than it seems.
Stuff like this annoys me though. Imagine walking up and down that all day, you'd break your arse. I noticed it in other games, it's a common thing. Ramps themselves aren't bad, but you often see them with ridiculous angles nobody with any sense would build.
bump
>>744650998The fallout series also has the balls to set the entire world in the same biome.
>>744650998>I can't really think of another game off the top of my head that attempted this. The setting was one of the few good points of this otherwise fairly average JRPG.
>>744650998Most of Assassin's Creed Origins's map is just sand and rocksit was cool
>>744655264As soon as they let you I went off on my camel exploring just to see how big the deserts really were and it was honestly really impressive and gave me a sense of wonder I hadn't felt in a game before.
>>744656145The desert illusions really enhanced it all.
>>744651510This ramp looks like some kind of troll mage built knowing anyone who won't levitate will slip and break their neck

>>744650998>ballsynot really when this and this were at the peak of popular culture when skyrim came out, the "fantasy in the snow" thing was full throttle
