I saw a thread archived recently and I wanted to continue the discussion. I get the aesthetics of these things, that's what got me interested in the first place, but from a practical standpoint why not just turn your phone/tablet into a retro emulation device?
>>
>>744651160
My phone is old.
My phone is for communication.
My phone is uncomfortable to game on.
>>
>>744651160
The aesthetic is the point. Retro hardware consumerism is vapid consumerism.
A phone has some weaknesses, most significantly the lack of physical buttons making high speed/precision gameplay difficult, but this isn't the main reason people buy retro/chinkhelds

I guess it's about something truly dedicated to just one thing. For me touch screen is also annoying as i have big fingers aswell
>>

>>744651301
Forgot to add, I presuppose connecting them to those bluetooth gamepads. So that solves the touchscreen issue.
>>
>>744651160
>from a practical standpoint why not just turn your phone/tablet into a retro emulation device

Here are my reasons for going the wuhanheld route instead:
>doesn't waste my phone's battery
>a handheld is smaller than a controller
>don't have to combine multiple objects into one
>I press the power button and am instantly in a game
>won't be frying my coolerless phone with Switch emulation and PC games
>offline device with no notifications is good to avoid distractions
>don't have to settle for touchscreen controls at any point

It's the same as asking "why get a PC if you have a laptop". I mean sure, a laptop can game, but it's much better at email and multimedia the same way a phone is optimized for multimedia and texting.
>>
>>744651398
Emulation on Android already adds a few ms of delay. I wouldn't want to lug around a full-sized controller AND add even more delay by using bluetooth.
>>
>>744651160
Yeah I never got it either, I just duck taped d-pads and buttons on my phone!
>>
>>744651398
>So that solves the touchscreen issue
I know i could get a controller but at that point a simple chinkheld does the job better. And i don't get distracted by my phone being my phone
>>
>>744651160
This assumes you have an overpowered phone in the first place which you'd be retarded to have.
>>
>>744651592
Even with the budget phones you can emulate most of retro gayms easily
>>
>>744651592
Yes buying a shitty phone and shitty chinkheld is a much wiser purchasing decision than buying a powerful phone which can do both
>>

Playing a game on using a flat screen for buttons feels awkward and it often registers the wrong input. Retro handhelds feel better than screens. Everyone should be happy that there's room for both, but since 4chins is filled with idiots they will argue over the shittier options for the sake of wasting time.
>>
I have the ambernic that looks like the sp. I like just being able to toss it into a bag and not worry about. I’m also trying to use my phone less because it will just lead to doomscrolling and ending up here on 4chan anyways.
That being said I wanted to read more this year so I mainly just read on my mini ereader now.

>>
>>744651160
You do you. I prefer having a separate device with actual cooling than turning my phone into a heater.
>>
>>744651830
If I already have a phone that does everything I need why would I upgrade to have a lesser experience when I can just buy a dedicated device to get my gaming on?

>>
>>744652007
Because anything your phone can't already run won't run on a cheap chinkheld either. If you're going to fork off a few hundreds for a high spec chinkheld might as well spend it on a better phone instead. It's not like modern hardware (both phones and handhelds) last more than 3-5 years
>>
>>744651160
I bought thus gameboy color looking thing from a chinese market. It feels kind of cheap like I could break it with too much use also it gets pretty hot pretty quickly. Maybe I bought a cheap one but I don't know much about retro consoles.

I've had my current phone for 6. And lading any phone up with a bunch of emulators is sure as shit not gonna help with it's lifespan.
I'd rather keep them separate even if I upgrade.
>>
>>744652118
>might as well spend it on a better phone instead
Why? A better phone isn't really much better for gaming due to the lack of cooling, ergonomics, battery, etc.
>>
>>744651160
playing blue archive drains my battery like crazy. Rather have a separate device to game that way I'm not stuck somewhere with my phone to talk

>>
>>744652752
What do you intend to run that you think requires a 1500$ phone?
How much does the equivalent chinkheld cost?

Literally any phone made in thr past decade should have zero trouble running anything up to the GBA. You could run GBA games on your microwave probably.
And nothing portable (short of a Deck) is going to run PS2/Wii games
The only question is where to draw the line. PS1/PSP/DS/GameCube is where a cheaper phone will falter and a more expensive device might work
>>
>>744653284
>And nothing portable (short of a Deck) is going to run PS2/Wii games
Sub $300 wuhanhelds are running Switch and lightweight PC games these days. PS2 and Wii and WiiU are no big deal for anything $250 and up.

You're 100% correct. If it's not a REAL UMPC that runs Linux/Windows there's no fucking point in spending on some dinky little Android shitbox when you could dump that money into your phone and just have all the exact same functionality+better specs than the chinkheld.

You have to buy the phone anyway, you have to have the phone in your pocket anyway. Fitting it to be gaming capable makes wayyy more sense than a dedicated device.
Then just use a controller to phone mount with your preferred controller which will objectively have better buttons than any chinkheld or dedicated gaming phone attachments.
>>
>>744652152
>analogue sticks on a GameBoy shaped handheld
Do people seriously use these? They just look like they'd be uncomfortable as hell to use. And not just that, but the entire point of these things is to feel like you're playing on a GameBoy, so I don't know why you'd even want to use this play any games that require analogue sticks.
>>
>>744653604
Is that right? I haven't really kept up with PS2 emulation much but it used to be so difficult that even top spec PCs would struggle with some games

Any shitty wuhandheld can run PS2/Wii.
No shitty wuhandheld is runnning Switch/WiiU. There just aren't good android forks for this shit

People claim normal phones can run 3DS as well and it just speaks to the standards of these retards when you go to run it and find out it's half speed

Anon, my RP6 and gf's AYN Thor run Switch game swith accurate performance. What are you talking about? I just finished Unicorn Overlord on my RP6, locked 60fps the entire time.
>>
>>744653850
My odin 3 is running switch pretty good. 60fps patches work too. Just a few compatibility issues but the tech itself is stronger than the switch.
>>
>>744653750
>>744653821
>>744653889
I mean you're out of touch but not out of line.

PCSX2 is better now but echoes of it being one of the shittiest emulators in the past remain. Even now it takes way more tinkering for acceptable performance and you run into things like the 3D GTA games (The best sellers on the console) STILL not having 5 star compatibility and needing tinkering at launch to fix issues in the presentation.
>>
>>744653925

desu playing on something that was specifically made for playing games on FEELS a lot better than playing on your phone.
And also I'd rather have a dedicated device, rather than burn out my phone's battery.
>>

Which is why we strap the phone to a dedicated first party controller

I can't begin to imagine how indian one must be to even humor the concept of a telescopic controller. Just think about it.

>hmm yes, I've watched all my fellow sirs videos on youtube, this 21:9 $400 tracking device is very good
>I will now spend another $100 to get a shoddy plastic tumor I have to couple and detach over and over again (everyone buys a new one every 6 months, but I'm sure that's not indicative of anything)
>which I'm also going to have to carry around
>I'm so fucking clever, let me build up my izzat on 4chan
>>
gaming on a phone is indian behaviour
>>
>>744653968
>60fps patches work too
Hitting above 30 doesn't mean it's not going below 30
>>
>>744654403
That's kinda the case for PC too. I don't find it that big a deal.
>>
>>744654491
>That's kinda the case for PC too
Maybe yours nigga but even a 3070ti can handle up to PS4 60FPS losslessly at 1440p ultrawide. And there's two whole gens above that where it's basically just a game of toggling meme settings to see if you can get the FPS to drop at all
>>
>>744653850
You can play switch just fine if you're not a nonce looking to play ubizelda. And the bar for PS2 is actually much higher than youtubers will have you believe, you're gonna eat shit with <$200 devices.

The most indian behavior of all is having more Android devices than absolutely necessary (one). Because the OS is a complete shitbox where all the user driven content is just thirdies trying to give you viruses or ports of good PC user content like Open MW, the recomps, etc

Do I want to invest in the android ecosystem (lmfao) or do I want to spend like 40 dollars to flip the existing phone I already have into a gaming capable device?
>>
>>744654589
We were talking about switch emulation and my point is that the emulator itself is the problem with hitches not the hardware. (At least on my odin) Because I can also run PC emulated games at a full 60fps like octopath
>>
>>744651160
The average phone is garbage and has no Vulkan drivers
>>
>>744654732
>ignores the fact that I'd rather not waste my phone's battery
You'll have a better phone because you spent the chinkheld money on the phone and batteries are about to be made replaceable by the EU anyway which will solidify this as the best strategy. I just keep a charger handy and top off throughout the day gaming or no gaming.
>ignores the fact that I'd be carrying around two clunky-ass accessories for this
You have a bag when you go out. I'm carrying two cheap to replace accessories in it, you're carrying around a theft prone device.
>ignores the fact that you now have to deal with retarded latency
Every controller in big 2026 is wireless, including the Switch's inputs, if your phone is having trouble with latency it's because it's a shitty poverty phone
>ignores the fact that a phone glued to a plastic arm sticking out of a knockoff XB360 controller looks infinitely more retarded than a simple retro handheld
Who cares about what normalfags think I have a comfy to grip form factor and first party inputs and if the controller ever gives out I replace it instead of needing to take apart a chinkheld and track down it's specific inputs for sale online.

Please explain how carrying a phone and a controller is worse than carrying a phone and a second device
Or are you going outside with your chinkheld but leaving your phone at home?
>>
Whats the durability of the "premium" side of these chinkhelds? Can they last for decades like Nintendo past handhelds or they'll break if you are not careful enough?
>>
>>744655026

NTA but
>Phone + controller + battery you'll need to keep it from dying + adapter
Or
>Phone + handheld
Assuming you get something like a thor you could fit both a phone and that comfortably in your pocket. I have never walked around with a controller in my pocket.
>>
>>744655332
You realize that you're in a reply chain, the very first line of which is
>The aesthetic is the point
We know that the real reason you're buying Chinese toys instead of playing on your phone is because you think it looks better, if you accept that too then there is no reason to pretend that there are objective reasons to it and we can stop arguing right here
>>
>>744655332
???

Not my line of reasoning because my solution with the controller mount is obviously worse in that department.

My points are mainly that android fucking sucks and pocketing gaming devices has sucked since the Gameboy so why would I spend 100-300 dollars on another android device to shove into my pocket when I have a bag anyway and could just do a combo of controller mount/touchscreen in jrpgs for when I dont wanna pull the controller out
>>
>>744655295
Been like 3 or 4 years since high end stopped being the exact same as low end but with a pricier chip inside, but nothing built today is comparable to pre-DS nintendium on any field, I'll tell you that much. You don't hear of those dying yet.

>>
>>744655803
How fast do you think this shit depletes battery? I played Dusklight for an hour and lost like 8%

Perchance it could have something to do with the fact that the phone my phone plan gave me for free is more expensive than 90% of high end chinkhelds and has a better battery than your 200 dollar shitheap that's dropping frames in Saturn and N64 games

This is why handhelds with stick batteries where the best. No charger needed, just keep an extra pair and swap them. Bonus point if they are rechargable at home. I miss those times, why everything need a hard to change battery
>>

The main issue with using your phone as your gaming device is the battery life. I don't even consider the other shit that big a deal but you'd definitely need a battery charger or portable battery plus the controller.

I mean batteries are becoming replaceable in phones next year (based EU) so it'll become less of a problem.

However, I maintain that you're completely fucking insane for thinking the battery drain is anything that would make it anyway difficult to make it through the day on one full charge. Guild Wars 1, a fucking MMO, doesn't do shit to my battery.

>>
I guess I use my handheld differently than others. It solely used for my downtime at work so I can pull it out of my pocket and stop it at any moment so that usually means games that don’t require a stick.
Ain’t now why I am putting so clunky controller in my pocket.
>>
I want your guys’ batteries. I’ve been at work for almost 4 hours and it’s been dead as fuck. So I have been on my phone off and on and my battery is already down to 49 percent.
>>
>>744656696
Oh lol

I use the mechanism brand mount+a magnet case for my phone.
They attach onto the back of controllers, they have dualsense, steam controller, Xbox, and a 8bitdo, I think a switch one too not sure. They have ones that replace the battery back and ones that grip the controller. The battery pack replacements are more secure but I don't dislike the grips
Then on the phone side it's a magnet mount. It's pretty cool because you can rotate it vertical for DS/Arcade games/some android ports gave crazy vertical fovs like links awakening DXHD and gen1recomp
The neck isn't bendy but it has two screw tighteners at the top and bottom so you can get the center of balance even
>>
>>744656849
>Great for the EU
Lmao america had apple get rid of the lightning charger because if the EU regulation. Phone developers aren't gonna spend the money worrying about if the right models are going to the EU and the battery being replaceable will be worldwide standard by the end of the year

I prefer the original hardware as both a collector and enjoyer of old handhelds. But with so many, a singular device does make sense, especially from a cost and space effective standpoint. I'm at a point I've committed enough I'm sticking to OG hardware. I would not blame anyone for buying into these if they don't have the hardware already.
That said, I've been skeptical of their own longevity. Are these kind of devices sturdy and well put together? How are older models holding up?
>>
>>744657912
Collecting is an entirely separate hobby from just gaming.
Respectable but separate. I doubt anyone into these kinds of things would have a collectors mindset.
>>
>>744657912
>That said, I've been skeptical of their own longevity. Are these kind of devices sturdy and well put together? How are older models holding up?
I haven't owned my RP6 long, but I have torn into it to do mods. It's built to the same standard as a PSP or DS. I'd say the Fisher Price ones are probably more sketchy, but the "mainstream" wuhanhelds seem of decent quality.
>>
>>744651160
>from a practical standpoint why not just turn your phone/tablet into a retro emulation device?
I use a small handled (gkd pixel 2) which takes less space in my pocket than a controller would while having a jack port for audio.
It's nice to use for public transports or waiting rooms, and because it has a jack port it's also nice as a music player. If I had a phone grip instead, playing would still use the phone's battery and have eventual distractions from notifications and whatnot.
When doing long travels I do use a tablet + controller as a proper emulation device for hotels, but the handheld is always nicer when on the go.
