What do you think of From Software’s storytelling?
>>
prepare to die edition ruined the souls franchise
>>
It’s interesting! In the landscape of the gaming medium, I’d much rather play one of their games for the world and story than the latest Naughty Dog or Ubisoft game
>>
>extra spice in the background that you only pay attention to if you want to
Better than cutscenes.
>>
>>744651912
Better than 99% of games
>>
>>744651912
It's based. Carmack was right about stories in games.

Pretty good if too esoteric sometimes.
>>
story?
oh, you mean schizos writing 20,000 word essays about 3 words on a random item found in rat shit and basilisk dookie?
>>
If the story was worth telling there would be dialouge or cutscenes.
>>
Zanzibartbros, our response?
>>

This is the right amount of esoterica. This looks confusing but the all crucible talisman is so obviously an arial view of Bayle's peak that you can see how they are threading it for the player to be able to parse it.
>>
It's fine. It was never meant to appeal to a wide audience, all these games were made with full understanding that it's going to be a niche game. That it got mainstream success was a side effect, not the intention. So the quest design and storytelling never adjusted to mainstream expectetions.
If you have an issue with this, you've always been a secondary.
>>
>>744651912
Perfect, if you don't care about the story it doesn't matter, if you love story discovering it is way better than movie game loredumps
>>

whats the thesis statement here? im ready for a schizotheorycraft loredump

trvth. amazing how many people don't realize they're being filtered specifically by the developer. don't like it? fromsoft has been politely telling you from day one to go play another game.
>>
its pretty bad but i dont really care i dont play games for the story. i dont care about the fictional story i have a life and im not a faggot
>>
It's peaked in Elden Ring and I don't see how they can top it. You can ignore any and all story if you are a brainlet who wants to fight video game bosses. But what is there is fascinating and explores the gamut of human experiences. Faith, love, death, ambition, enslavement, etc etc. I still think about it.

you should get a tshirt that says "I HAVE NEVER READ A BOOK"
>>
>>744652474
By reading the items associated with the crucible then noticing the crucible talismans are actual aerial renditions of the dlc map you can figure out that 'the crucible' always being discussed is simply the shadowlands itself. People have long theorized on what the crucible actually is when what is it was always in the game. The fucky thing is most of the items showing the shadowlands map are from the base game that predated the dlc by 2 years.

A crucible is a melting pot for metal to fuse together and you remove the slough, if you mentally visualize the entire lands between with the shadowlands in the middle it forms a giant bowl - a crucible.

>>744651912
I like the overall storytelling but NPC quests are indeed bullshit
>>
>>744651912
Really just needs a journal to keep track of your interactions.
>>
>>744652751
I've read plenty of books anon. I'm not saying Elden Ring is the first or even best to explore these topics. I'm saying the writing that is there does a lot of illuminate parts of the world while keeping things vague enough for interpretation. Which ties in to the religious aspects and what belief truly means.
>>
>>744652751
Ironically I think you’re the one who can’t read if you think this is a gotcha of any kind
>>
>>744652751
Nta but in a book you read a story, in ER or any other souls is like you are an archeologist discovering clues of something that happened way before you got there. You see what's left of those who lived in another time and fight against what's left of what destroyed them.
Souls games are amazing.
>>
>>744651912
>oh nice some loot!
>>
>>744652087
This feels like a genuine discovery that someone needed to actually work out. The anon that figured it out is probably really proud of himself.
>>
>>744653048
ER sort of interweaves both. When you fight Godfrey at the end of the game you were actually given hints it would happen in the first hour or so. You have to be (((media literate))) to know what a burning of the boats signifies, but the game is heavily pulled from where that story telling motif came from.
When you fight gideon at the end of the game his monologue is more to do with your actual lived experience as the player than anything you read in a lore item description. You know he is wrong because (you) have already done what he claims is impossible.
>>
It's cool. I just make up whatever happened because I'm not going to go look up some loser's lore wiki.
>>
>>744653330
Agreed, but for me the best part of the story is Marika's madness and how a broken being stays broken even she tried to build a perfect world.
>>
>>744653520
The game did a great job showing her as a real person making real decisions that were terrible but she really thought they were the best option at the time.
She is a liar, a thief, a whore, a manipulator, a lover, a queen, a mother, the abused, etc etc. She is a full person. The way they structured it worked so well that it extended to how people viewed Miquella which is cool. It extended to all the demi-god children and made them feel believable as a response to their mother. When you see Mohg you can take his side even though he's evil, same with Miquella, because you can see how badly living under Marika must have been for her kids.
>>
>>744651912
It's cool that you have to try and figure shit out but it feels ridiculously easy to fail
>>
>>744651912
It sucks
The gameplay sucks
The level design sucks
The visuals suck
The players suck

so it's almost like the giant's flame being kept in a giant bowl is their vengeful wrath against erdtree

>>744651912
I like it. Get over your FOMO and accept that you won't see everything in a single playthrough.
>>
>>744654015
yes
>>
>>744654659
Not sure on that one. For the first flame or giants I think it is interesting to note that the hornsent considered the giant's crucible to be their old history, while the GO sees the crucible as its old history.
To the giants there was probably an even older rendition of the crucible that they deemed "Ur." History repeats its themes in elden ring. It is pottery.

>fromsoft npcs when you remember to give the dull femur to quiblinec the sorrowful before you fight the boss:
>>
>>744654659
The giant's kiln is a reference to Hephaestus or Haphaistion as he was known predating greeks. He was the god of blacksmithing and artisans and he was represented by an eternal fire that couldn't be extinguished. Artisans of the day would keep a special brazier altar close to their workstations. In ER the giant crucible is in the 'orbit' of the larger crucible like it would be conceptually to the artisans that revered Hephaestus.
