A controller could come out with 50 buttons, but you would only be able to map them to existing inputs on a 360 controller (or some programmable macro consisting of those same inputs).Maybe with Microsoft starting to move towards GameInput, that can change things going forwards. Having a unified input API also opens up interesting possibilities, like using a mouse for accurate aiming and a joystick for 360° analogue movement.
