What happened to Japanese indie games? Originally you had stuff like Touhou, Cave Story and La-Mulana which gained a cult following. Then you had that period where high profile Japanese developers who claimed to be the father of a series (Keiji Inafune, Koji Igarashi) got fired and resorted to begging on kickstarter to fund their spiritual successors. Aside from those, you barely hear about anything.

the obvious answer: they have all moved onto to smartphone games. even their coomer devs.

I know nal doesn't do his comiket trailer compilations anymore but comiket still happens twice a year.

They're not intended for your gaijin eyes.

games got easier to make, more people are making indie games, small jap devs without marketing have to compete with little timmy is garage busting out generic slop to his 2 million followers on xitter and the other 500 games being released on PC daily

Market is too competitive now for these types of games. Get lucky with friendslop or luck into a massive social media following outside of japan.

>What happened to Japanese indie games
I stopped discussing them on /v/ because people here are mentally disabled and can't play anything interesting
>>
it was mostly amateurish games that never get translated and stayed in the japanese indie microcosm but it is changing fast.
have a look at bitsummit if you want to explore that community

and the indie freaks tweeter: https://x.com/Indie_FreaksJP
(many japanese indie devs are girls, please don't harass them!)

They're still around, you just don't know where to look.

Why you don't hear about them
1. Normalfags have been programmed to rebel against certain things Japs like, such as attractive female characters.
2. Websites like /v/ where you used to hear about 2hu and stuff have been overrun by normalfags who would rather hate watch triple A games than spread the good word about real vidya.
3. Japanese marketplaces have been oppressed by the west with Visa and Mastercard censoring their ability to sell games.
4. Many new indie games requiring a more in depth translation than the likes of 2hu or Cave Story to enjoy.

>>744660626
pretty sure a lot of shit still gets released at comiket

La-Mulana in specific seems like such a miracle.
Someone actually went through the trouble of creating a HUGE puzzle platformer like no other ever, entirely in MSX graphics.
The more I think about it, the more absurd it seems.
>>
>>744665107
It is, but its not like crazy one shot wonders like la mulana have stopped happening. The only thing about la mulana that really makes it crazy is that it managed to achieve some mainstream success.

Whats the best way to play la mulana
>>
>>744666661
La-Mulana in particular combines platforming, exploration and puzzles in a way that pretty much no other game does. There are countless Metroidvanias on the market, but none of them require you to truly understand the game world in the way the La-Mulana does. It's especially amusing considering the only games Nigoro have released outside of the La-Mulana series are flash games where you do stuff like flipping skirts or slapping people.

Sadly the absolute best version was the vita release.
But the pc, and original freeware versions are fine.

I wish there were games with the depth of la-mulana just hiding away on itch.io or steam or something but nothing can even hold a candle to it.
>>
>>744667769
You can play the remake of the original and La-Mulana 2 on pretty much any modern platform (PC, Switch, Playstation, Xbox). The games are actually discounted right now, it's £2.19 on steam for La-Mulana 1 or £8.48 for the 1 & 2 bundle, which is IMO the greatest value purchase you could ever make in terms of video games.

Just be sure to thoroughly read the manual (available for free online), regularly take screenshots and make notes, and save in multiple slots. People who try the game and expect a regular Metroidvania often get filtered, since exploration requires much more than just looking at your map and seeing which path you haven't taken yet. It's much closer to an old-school adventure game in terms of its design philosophy. The jumping controls also put some people off, but the trick is realising there are basically two types of jumps (a forward jump with a rigid arc, and a "neutral" jump that lets you control your descent). When you understand that, you appreciate how tight they are and how the game is designed around it.

La-Mulana 2 has more "modern" controls and is more accessible at the start for newer players. Although it basically spoils the plot and lore of the first game at the beginning, which is a huge part of the experience of the first game. So I wouldn't recommend starting with it.

>>744660626
This is just my shitty uniformed opinion but aren't most indie japanese games for PC? From my little understanding, japanese people prefer consoles and mobile over PC and there has never been a mainstream PC gaming culture for Japan

There's Black Souls, I guess. But nothing else went even semi-mainstream.
