Why do so many people think this is the best Zelda game?
>>
>>744679574
because it's the "dark" one and also the one that most people haven't finished so you can be edgy and elitist at the same time.
>>
>>744679574
Different pacing than other games in the series, weirder setting and interesting themes.
It is extremely divisive. Even the developers seem to be kind of ashamed of what they did with it, which is always interesting to see with creative works.
>>
Because it doesn't gave any of the cliche shit (saving zelda, triforce, ganon)
>>
>>744679574
Because no other game before or since has been able to make a believable world where every character in it is actually doing something all day.
Dungeons are good
Bosses good too
Character interactions are memorable
>>
>why do so many people think the best zelda game is the best zelda game?
It's a mystery, innit.

First game I 100%’d. Fierce Diety’s + lonlon milk made the final boss facerolls

Oblivion tried and honestly did okay with it.
Literally the only two games to do so though.
>>
NPCs doing something different every day was really cool back in the day. Also all of the different mask effects were fun.

There's been such a strange switch up on Majora's Mask in the past ten years. I think it has something to do with creepypasta and pretentious youtube videos.

Mature, well written themes that respect the player
Good new mechanics and dungeon design
Interesting and meaningful side content that feels as polished as the main story

Because it improves OOT while being a unique experience and it got it right in a couple months while the series could never reach that high again even 27 years later

I wonder if Nintendo will bother remaking this if the OOT Remake does well. I feel like this game can't really be remade in a satisfactory manor as the N64 aesthetic is part of its appeal. If it had hire this man graphics it would detract from the game.

The most unsettling thing about Majora's Mask is no matter how hard you try you simply cannot do everything in those three days. Just like real life you can help as much as you can but you can't stop the inevitable. Everyone you know is destined to have something bad happen to them that you can't do anything about. Each good deed done in this game is reset like it didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Stopping the moon will only cause the problems you failed to solve persist until the ones they had plagued pass away. You can't stop the progression of time, you can't save everyone, one must accept this reality and come to terms. In a sense, the moon falling down on everyone is the only way to make every single problem go away at once.

Because every other Zelda game is just Link to the Past with a fresh coat of paint or open world slop
Majora's Mask and the GB games are the only other flavor so it gets easy points for being pretty unique, despite the obvious model reuses

a moon with a dumb face? jew nosed giants? mask transformations? almost all assets are reused from OOT, almost no unique characters?

the game is a joke. it's ridiculous nonsense. OOT is a serious medieval adventure story based on european folklore (peter pan, king arthur, ...) with a great atmosphere and music, a masterpiece. there is no comparison.

Not really, and personally I think that's why it's remembered so dearly

MM was never liked when it came out. It was considered the black sheep of the series along with Zelda 2. Only edgy contrarians started larping about it around the late 2000's early 2010's.
>>
>>744698115
Hey! lets make a player restart a side quest because the day changed!
This only becomes a problem in the Couple Mask sidequest because it can branch off in several results
>Hey! lets make the player farm for his weapons/items whenever he goes back in time!
Oh no i have to go cut grass in Termina in 2 minutes, the horror
>Hey! lets make 99% of the masks useless!
I'll give you this one since like half of them are for a Piece of Heart and that's it
>Hey! let's add a time limit for a series known for it's exploration!
Unironically filtered lmao.

Because it has the best story, best characters, most interesting lore, and is tinged with sadness all throughout.
Because the gameplay was fun and it remixed/added to stuff introduced in OoT, itself a fantastic game.
Incredible music that added to the game's atmosphere.
An incredibly unique time system that gave weight to everything you did in a given cycle.
NPCs that have mapped out routines, that make the world feel alive even though it came out 26 years ago.

For once, they had no one breathing down their neck that they couldn't add a story to a Zelda game that wouldn't put Miyamoto to sleep, and the result was the best game in the Zelda series.

I've long held this opinion since I beat it in like 2004, and I had by this point cleared OoT like 5 times at least.
>>
>>744697961
It has some unique elements. the time mechanic was unique. but it is not the same type of game. it is not a serious game. it derivative work. is inferior artistically, dumb frankly and japanese-weird, not european based, and inferior in numerous other metrics.
>>
>>744698338
Why do aphoids always pretend they remember the 2000s?
>>
Why does everyone give Twilight Princess shit for it's intro when this one was long and boring too.
>>
>>744679574
I like it, but one of my big issues with the game is that it gets really repetitive to go through the 3 days over and over if you're on a blind playthrough, it wastes a lot of time.
>>
>>744698795
tbf you can actually skip most of it by dancing with the scarecrow, but yeah the intro is the weakest part.
>>
>>744680891

>>
>>744698795

>>
>>744698795
If we count TP's early-game twilight sections as the game's "intro" then it's probably about four times as long as Majora's first three days. And I think it's fair to count them as such since they're boring as fuck and restrict the player from accessing the majority of the game's content. Seriously I would love TP if the beginning weren't such a slog.
>>
>>744698795
10 minute intro VS 2-3 hours
gee i wonder why
>>
>>744679574
The real answer is because of the three day cycle, it makes the world feel alive.
>>
>>744679574
its fun to figure out and it is very rewarding to do well in and has a lot of different things to "play" around with like masks. for instance if you pay attention to the game you be able to slow time to half speed almost immediatly which feels good. If you do that you will feel rewarded and enjoy the game more. If you dont do that then you will probably hate the game because not only are you the type of person to miss really important things like that but now you are playing the game on what is relatively a hardmode

>>
Majora has circled right into being the most overrated Zelda because Internet decided to adopt it as it's special child. It's liked almost completely based on vibes, it isn't too different from the Internet obsession with Earthbound. All it's flaws are ignored since the game is a sacred cow.
>>
>>744709464
>the most overrated Zelda
Wind Waker has been coasting on "heh, well the graphics aged well!" and absolutely nothing else for actual decades.
>>
>>744679574
Because nearly every other game ever made operates at the pace of the player, with time effectively standing still waiting for your input
It's one of a small handful of games where the story unfolds, characters do things and events happen whether you're there to interact with them or not
This makes the world feel alive in a way games decades later still struggle to accomplish
>>

Beyond the darker atmosphere that everyone hops on mentioning I really adore it's focus on side-quests and characters way more than other entries more common formula of focusing on story progression via a lot of temples and speaking of story I like how character-driven Majora's Mask is unlike other entries. Also the time/day cycle system gives me a Pikmin-esque appeal where I try to do everything 100% as efficiently and as in little cycles as I can so I find it very replayable as result.

>>

>>
>>744679730

It's not dark. It's actually quite comfy. It just deal with mature themes of lost and death. The "creepy horror" reputation completely misses the warm, deeply intimate heart of Termina. While surface elements like the looming moon and transformation animations carry dread, the actual gameplay engine is driven by empathy, routine, and quiet sanctuary. Once you learn Clock Town's rhythm, the world feels less like an apocalyptic wasteland and more like a living, familiar neighborhood.

You know precisely when the Postman goes on his route, when Anju checks the front desk at the Stock Pot Inn, and when the Indigo-Go's rehearse. You aren't just saving a realm from afar; you're sitting in on town meetings, listening to Grandma's stories by the fire, and relaxing at the Milk Bar.

Link’s primary tool for progression isn't brute force: it's the Song of Healing. You ease the grief of tormented spirits, turning their lingering regrets into instruments of aid. The game confronts death, but its resolution is consistently focused on peace, closure, and emotional relief.

It is actually a story about human connection in the face of the inevitable. It achieves a deeply poignant, surprisingly comforting tone.

I missed out on OoT, and MM was my first "actual" Zelda I played, so there's a special nostalgic quality to it, for me at least.
Apart from that, I enjoy the more compact, claustrophobic nature of the game instead of the epic, time-spanning scale of OoT.

it's a remarkable phenomenon that budget constraints often produced the most memorable results during this period. MM is timeless and memorable because it was a budget-constrained team working with existing art assets to create a dreamlike fantasy redo of the original game, based on a deeply held conviction about a vision of the darkness underlying the original oot artisitc direction. basically the lack of resources for the cash grab asset flip sequel allowed them more conceptual freedom in defining aspects of the gameworld that were merely implicit in the original oot art direction.
