That's pretty much a given for sci-fi literature, it's a genre that carries itself more by the mind blowing concepts it presents rather than the characters

I can see this working quite well as one of those 80s/90s point and click puzzle adventure games a la shogun for the MS-DOS. I envision a lot of the puzzle's answers being related to anti-logic / breaking laws of physics. As an alternate attempt to adapt this book, instead, adapt a playable version of the in-universe Three Body video game.

>>744683061
This is one of the most vidya-esque books ever. There's literally bosses. Also, the plot is pretty much medieval Last of Us.

>>744685681
I would love an Eschaton video game.

>>744683646
As I mentioned above, Shogun for the MS-DOS.

Dune and Dune II are both good and the sequel basically started the RTS genre.

Some horrible examples, but you can kinda look at Stalker, any James Bond game, and some Tom Clancy games as being vidya adaptations of books. Stalker is inspired by Roadside Picnic. I don't know if there was a Bond book that received a straight vidya adaptation (i.e. GoldenEye is inspired by James Bond, but the movie is not directly based on any of the books).

On the topic of Tom Clancy, I would love another attempt at a Red Storm Rising vidya.

The Three-Body Problem is such a funny look into the projection of the Chinese mindset where they are unable to come up with a perfect solution to a hard problem and then decide that in response that some genocidal response is only other way and is "how the universe works".

In the real world there's all sorts of practical ways to get past the three-body-problem, like for example just doing dynamic orbit adjustment to maintain an unstable equilibrium like how most life works, or just building interstellar space colonies with thrusters. Instead the Trisolarians decide on some convoluted plan that involves higher dimensional tech all that dosen't even succeed anyways.
>>
>>744683465
Pretty sure the problem with Neuromancer was that all its best ideas had already been cannibalised by other media like The Matrix, etc. Chris Cunningham was meant to make a film out of it like 20 years ago, but that was the biggest problem. General audiences who didn't know the book would just assume you were ripping off The Matrix, etc.
>>
>>744684170
I think the problem with Battle Royale was that it was kids (under 18YO) killing other kids. Pretty sure that's a no-no in Hollywood due to inspiring Columbine-style copycats, etc. You can have kids killing adults though, or adults killing kids, no problem.

>>744688485
The problem comes in the later books where it turns out that the Trisolarians aren't even the biggest threat, and their bullshit got loud enough for another even more advanced hostile civilization to notice.

But the issue is that the conclusion they come to is dumb (stay quiet so no one notices you, and squash any rivals you come across). Dark Forest theory falls apart if even a handful of civilizations figure out how to work together.
>>
>>744689881
Nah, the reason you can't gamify Battle Royale is because deployment is sequential as well as from a singular spawn point. Unless developers hard code it to where the first dude gets a shitty kit, a vast majority of the victories will end up being the result of the first guy out just spawn camping. The reason such a deployment works in the books is because the students are still in shock and denial in regard to the events happening to them, and you can't really gamify that.
>>
>>744690642
There are a few that work together, like the zero-runners, but they're the exception and not the rule, and the goal they work towards is to fold the dimensions until the universe resets back to its original state

Dark Forest theory is like a universal stretch of natural selection we see here on Earth, there are a few organisms that work together and thrive, but the rule of survival of the fittest still prevails. Don't forget that the universe of TBP has as many civilizations in the cosmos as there are stars, and these civilizations keep expanding while the total amount of mass stays the same.

Different races exterminate one another because 1. The biological differences in body and mind makes them immediately distrustful of what the other might be thinking, and 2. If things continue like this, there will eventually reach a point where the entire universe will be so crammed with life that there will be no matter enough for everyone
>>
>>744690760
You could just give them different spawn points. It's a game version not a 1:1 VN.
>>
>>744691035
>You could just give them different spawn points
That defeats the point that >>744684170 was making.
There's a fuck ton of battle royale games, but all of them take liberties rather than following how the program worked in the novel verbatim. You get to spawn wherever you choose, the map is an ever encroaching circle rather than just random blocks on a grid being designated lethal, kit procurement is based on finding them in the environment rather than taking what you "spawn" with and using it to take what others have.
The rules of it work fine and well in the novel/manga/movie because what drives it forward is the character drama. You can't force drama in a multiplayer video game, and multiplayer games are hardly ever propelled forward by drama.
>>
>>744683465
the adaptations of jojo and monster are good though? also berserk was always done well for the golden age arc
>>
>>744691356
Yeah you guys are both retarded. Not a single video game is an exact copy of the source material. Hell, just look at the examples ITT, both Dune games are great and they take huge "artistic licenses".
>>
>>744682809
If you want a more compelling contact book, read The Mote in God's Eye. Some of it is a slog, but it's depiction of alien life is extremely well done
>>
>>744691493
Then by your logic not a single book/movie is ungamifiable. Just slap the title on a 2d platformer and you got "book : the game".

>Dark Forest theory is like a universal stretch of natural selection we see here on Earth, there are a few organisms that work together and thrive, but the rule of survival of the fittest still prevails.
This is a misunderstanding of survival of the fittest. It doesn't necessitate competition where the losers go extinct. Sometimes that happens, but that's not what the theory describes. Survival of the fittest just means that you die off if you don't find or if you lose your niche. Sometimes that niche involves symbiosis with another species, where you cease to be separate organisms. And even if destruction/assimilation is inevitable, there is still value in being able to exist for some period of time - which would privilege "prosocial cooperation" over "reckless and possibly suicidal antagonism".
>1. The biological differences in body and mind makes them immediately distrustful of what the other might be thinking
The point is that overcoming this is the key to surviving an antagonist's attack, and all it takes is a few civilizations realizing this to flip the paradigm. The whole reason the series kicks off is because a human recognizes a twisted sort of kinship with the Trisolarians, something they feel more than their connection to humanity.

I've been reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories. It's been really fun so far, so very few of the early volume is actually about murders but the ones that are can get surprisingly brutal.
After this though I'm really excited to crack open the copies of manly wade Wellman's John the Balladeer.

I'm going for an easy bit of brainless sci fi and reading the fourth book of Red Rising. The first book is almost outright bad and reads like someone took each of the most popular young adult novels of the past two decades and tossed them into a blender but after that it evolves into some solid, if a bit simplistic, space opera.

It reminds me that I should really get around to finishing Legend of Galactic Heroes.

i fucking hate this novel. reading it is like getting hit in the head with a bag of sand swung by a toddler repeatedly. i know that the digression is intentional and humorous in nature (and i did admittedly laugh for a while when he said he was going to write a chapter upon whiskers) but holy shit not only is it wildly dull but also somehow manages to be convoluted with zero (0) action whatsoever
i'm also reading augustus (williams) and the short stories of robert walser (both of these things are good)

>their culture is rife with betrayal and murder over petty things in order to maintain or elevate their station.
Right. And then, historically the people who've subscribed to that mindset get trounced by the groups who band together.
It's a pessimistic and tunnel-visioned perspective that appeals to people who feel stuck within a system that can never be rivaled or reformed, ironically encouraged by a party (allied group) that... rivaled and reformed the prior system.
I understand the Chinese-ness of it, I'm just saying that it's objectively wrong.

Vidya is actually a fairly flexible medium. Even more experimental works and narrative structures can be adapted significantly more effectively by it by virtue of the fact that the POV is dumped directly into the world. Ironically, the types of stories video games would struggle to adapt would be straightforward and simple narratives where most of the value is in prose and tight characterization. You couldn't adapt a Hemingway book into a video game because the whole point of Hemingway is that there is no frills to it. Something like the Old Man and the Sea wouldn't really work because the player is forced to share a POV with a character that already has an idiosyncratic POV that the player might not fully relate to and the prose intentionally avoids overly descriptive language so building out a world for it necessarily detracts from the style of the book. But vidya would be good for adapting infamously difficult to adapt books like Dune or Infinite Jest. I would like to see an Inherent Vice video game personally purely because it's the last book I actually read start to finish.

Stylistic choice

Night In The Woods is more geared to older audience, but making the characters makes them easier to get attached to (i know it's not a book but just an example)

I read Snow Crash for the first time last year after years of hype, it being considered one of the great American novels, it being beloved on 4chan, it being beloved by people who hate 4chan - I had to try it. And? You know what? It’s overrated. The best part of it is the games (and one nerdcore rapper) it inspired. It also had some nostalgic unlock value for me, because reading it led me to realize that several of the characters in my favorite childhood book series, Spy Gear Adventures, were direct lifts from Snow Crash. I would definitely appreciate a recommendation for a novel that is *like* Snow Crash but better.

He's right. Death's End the Third book undoes everything the first two establish and shows that planets are the least safest places in space, and just cruising around in a space ship makes you invincible. The entire invasion was a waste of time and resources and the Fleets evolve into civilizations..The planets are sitting ducks.

No. It has an amazing Fallen Earth/Weird Tales world and it's so over the top while being very mysterious.
One of the most amazing things is that being a normal human farmer is kind of exactly the same, but instead of shooting varmints with a .22 to protect your crops and livestock, you're firing atomic heat rays at mist monsters. and it's also fucking stupid and like other anons said bug-brained. if it were true, Earth's own ecosystem would be nothing but species vying for themselves, because most of the same rules apply. instead, what you see is mutualism, symbiosis and parasitism in addition to antagonism. which means that yes, there will be alien species that actively hate you and want to kill you for being different, but also that there will be species that are ambivalent, want to get along with for mutual support or that want to leech off of you because they're weaker. there's no rational reason to assume that everyone is automatically hostile, only an irrational china-brained one.

>utterly alien and disconnected on every level
except they share the same universe and the same physics. thus far, we have no reason to assume that other natural biological processes are inherently superior. water is everywhere, so is carbon and a bunch of additional elements, so organic chemistry is king when otherwise you have to depend on bullshit like arsenic or NaK. but even that would make aliens only physiologically different; all the same game theory and emergent processes of evolution and competition apply to all life. ie if it arose naturally, it's going to act naturally like we do. the only truly alien life that we could not assume works on the same competitive-cooperative rules as we do is something truly alien and not entirely alive, like a Boltzman brain, or a constructed artificial life with someone else's motives.
even in something like Blindsight, the aliens there work on those same processes. Earth simply got the bad draw of the cards and got Space Ants that view higher culture and communication as an active attack. the problem lay in the fact that they are eusocially hierarchical unlike human herd behavior which still leaves space for individuals. they are not alien, they're just ants that grew up to engulf entire solar systems.

It's so small minded if people are turned off these books because of this. The whole point is that Severian is not a very good person to begin with, that's why his character arc has meaning. I guess some people can't help but conflate the author's views with their characters' views, but Wolfe deserves more credit than that

>hence why it's optimal to stay hidden and blow up any alien species as soon as you get the chance.
the first part's right. the right course of action is observant vigilance. to shut the fuck up, watch and wait until you're strong enough as a civilization that you might be able to push away a potential invading force of a reasonable size. then you can do whatever you want. too early, you may risk annihilation, but unlike in Le Dark Forest, it's not an absolute 100%. it's a probability between 1%-99%, and when failing that roll of the die is "you potentially get your entire species annihilated", that's not a good chance to take. it's like the Star Trek Prime Directive from the other end. you don't *know* if the space ship coming to check you out has only noble intent, so you should play it safe.
and unlike in slop sci-fi, in real life there's no FTL to jump you with your pants down. everyone can see everything if you've got eyes big enough, and while there definitely are ways to hide, once you get to the Kardashev 2 and higher level it becomes increasingly harder to hide activity. there's multiple heat signatures we know of right now in galaxies hundreds of parsecs away that could potentially be the result of a Dyson swarm, we just don't know enough about either natural star formation and lifecycle or Dyson swarms that we can't be sure.

yes, but infinite values break all game theory no matter where you put them and it's not how either rational or irrational players play, just like you can't value a single human life as infinitely valuable even though you are one and you would very much like not to die. the value is very high, but not so high that you can't ever under any circumstance emerge from your hidey hole.

when it's reasonable to do so. the peak of real-life destructive capability is something like a Nicoll-Dyson beam. if you can reasonably defend against that, it's probably fine to emerge. even if some species learns how to harness and weaponize black holes, microscopic or not, and gravitics (not to be confused with anti-gravity; tl;dr using mass the way one uses electrons in circuits to create gravitational wave impulses) it's not like you can't avoid most anything by spreading out wide and far very quickly. going loud the moment you can put a generational ship around every star system probably wouldn't be a bad idea if all you care about is species survival.

Why would anyone want hyperion adaptation? The book was 700 pages long in the edition I read in my native language. There's no way to adapt it in any meaningful way on sane budget and length. You would need to make 7 movies for every traveler or try to squeeze it into 3 movies like peter jackson did with lotr but it made the movies 3h+ each.
Last book adaptation was Solaris adaptation by that russian director that made Stalker. I forgot his name. The movie only conveyed half of the information you could find in the book which focused on personal experience while omitting the science world reaction to the planet. I'm not saying it's bad, but as far books go you have to account for the length of material and relatively short format of audiovisual media. Especially for quite big book like Hyperion.

Not really. I read them because "big classic everyone say are masterpiece of double meanings and how the main character LIES and stuff".

Pretty disappointed. It's just a series in the Dying Earth genre, verging on SF later on. The world isn't particularly nice or imaginative, it's basically textbook Dying Earth. The story and the characters aren't particularly deep, it's just Dying Earth. And the "narration lying" elements are extremely overrated.

I mean, it's not bad, I guess. It's just a bit formulaic.

>>744722646
it really isn't unrealistic. consider: the universe is a couple of billions of years old, doesn't matter how many. life has existed for a smaller couple of billions of years on this planet. complex multicellular life has existed for hundreds of millions of years. once it got to a form where it could make tools and form civilizations it went off like a rocket, going from a minor great ape to a world-spanning species that dominates every ecosystem within at absolute most a hundred thousand years. if that trend holds on interstellar expansion, and it's a big assumption, the rest of a galaxy could be colonized at an almost exponential speed, only barring the limits of light speed. even if it takes a whole million years to fully colonize a galaxy, that's absolute peanuts within the timespan of billions, much less the trillions of years expected to last within the usable lifespan of the universe. that's the whole reason the Drake equation even exists, because it means we're either the first or something prevents other species from spreading like wildfire, because why wouldn't you colonize everything you possibly can?
there's no practical limit to how many humans can exist at once outside of the amount of matter in the universe. it's pertinent to assume that there aren't really any limiters to growth below that.

The dark forest doesn't really work out because it'd be more efficient to integrate other societies than to destroy them outright. The entire premise hinges on the idea that sapient species will put their own species ahead of all other species even though it is only logical on an evolutionary premise and not a sapient premise. Why would an advanced alien species hate our species when what distinguishes us is the evolutionary makeup, even though we still think and feel too? If such an advanced society has the technology to blow up other planets and star systems would it not have the time and technology to have effectively solved discrimination where integration in such a society would be easy? The implication of aliens that have such advanced technologies but still have such outdated views and culture that doesn't match their technological prowess would be akin to monkeys with nukes, and that's more terrifying.

Geography.

Large population on a geography that has no natural borders (basically, it's all plains and rivers) means China frequently united when a conqueror was good enough, then broke down under its own vastness, then was united again through force, then broke down under its own vastness, etc.

There are a reason that China has a tremendous amount of civil war, often monstrously costly.

Europe has the opposite problem: the geography forces heterogeneity over a very small amount of land. You can literally take a two day trip, goes through a mountain, and the nation, culture, language, and philosophy is different. China has homogeneity through a land that is often so vast it's ungovernable.

This means the value of human life in China is extremely low, unfortunately, and the government often extreme.

And the kicker is that the entire series is premised on some chick being so sick of the CCP's shit that she sells out humanity. From jump, Dark Forest is discredited. The tragedy of TBP is that if humanity and the Trisolarians (and the other civs) had found a way to coexist, they could have drawn out a generally happy and prosperous existence for quite a while.

the primary problem between the races is resources are limited
>>
>>744725170
That's the thing, there's no real life analogue for it, people often this assumption that what will happen in the future has already happened even though technology has been a consistent re-definer of trends. "Oh kids these days, they spend all their time browsing the internet, but I did the same with TV and my ancestors did the same with books so it's literally exactly the same" but it's not the same, things are different, the TV didn't allow real-time communication with other people, books weren't a cacophony of visuals and audio, it's all sorts of new paradigms, new frameworks, new possibilities, new problems, the only thing I'm certain of is that this re-defining will happen at least for a long time, and if an alien race gets so far to the point they could exert power under the dark forest theory then they almost certainly must have figured out solutions to things that are still considered problems to us and they must have changed themselves greatly to wield such power ideally, otherwise they would have probably destroyed themselves with it.
We depict aliens that do real world analogues like colonialism and slavery and exploitation and subjugation, it's what humanity did and what we expect other aliens to do in the future, but we rarely depict aliens that have gone through hell and back to survive their own power, nor how such things just wouldn't be a problem for them anymore. Why enslave when you can build machines? Why exploit when there are so many resources in the galaxy? Why destroy when they could join you?

At least it revealed that technology moved forward in the setting (they invented internal combustion engines in addition to steam rockets) and trees themselves were retconned to be packed with dirt on the inside instead of being completely made of wood.

>PLEASE join me in my nihilism I nEED everyone else to feel as hopeless and cynical about the state and nature of the universe I"M BEGGING YOU tell me that reality itself is suicidal i need to not feel alone in my belief that everyone wants to be alone forever
No. Sapients want to be happy.

You have to remember that in the book, the universe is already in the middle of an all-out war on a scale so vast that smaller civilizations can barely notice it.

Maybe they had, but not at light speed.

In order to work your assumption needs everyone to be an optimist like you
mine only needs a single civilization to be nihilistic (or realist or whatever)

No, my assumption is an observation of how life as an ecosystem actually works in the one place we know it to exist. Either you extrapolate from that or you're making up something else entirely. Which is what
>mine only needs a single civilization to be nihilistic (or realist or whatever)
And then I counter with, "Your single civilization needs to exist in a vast cosmos where no other civilizations gang up on it." The probability of that isn't zero, but it's not very high, either.

I'd say it would work better for an open-world game, akin to Assassin's Creed or Yakuza. Some kind of plot about Discworld's first undercover cop infiltrating a street gang and uncovering some huge conspiracy while parodying various game genres. And instead of Database in AC series, you get Footnotes putting some humorous context to various events, locations and personalities.

This man walks up, slaps your alien girlfriend's ass and says that every sentient alien will be human-like, communist and sexy due to parallel evolution. What do you do?

I agree with him and slap her ass myself.
We've encountered no alien life, so clearly they all starved to death as communists typically do.

China seems to be eating well enough.
