RedpiII me on CRTs for gaming.
>>744686312Expensive and weird flex, but okay. How they work (aside from the CRT technology) is they only support low as fuck resolutions, so 640x480 and shit like that, which allows your GPU to fucking powerlift the engine requirements, so you can achieve absolutely bonkers framerates with the "natural grain" of the CRT projection which make the games look beautiful. The CRT tech is analog. There's theoretically no framerate cap assuming the tube inside your monitor is high enough quality. However there is a resolution cap, again depending on the tube (read the manual), but it is counterbalanced by the soft natural bloom of the electrons hitting the screen.Playing old games on CRTs is what made them look good even though they were made of fugly polygons. Playing modern games on CRTs makes them look eerily beautiful.

Gentle reminder that playing on an old-ass TV doesn't make the game itself any better. Same for playing on original hardware.>input lag!A meme.>muh scanlines...CRT-Royale.>p-p-preservation!ROMs are widely available. How you play <<< What you play.
>>744687424>t.
The issue with playing modern games on a CRT comes down to a lot of text and UI elements being practically illegible due to not being scaled to account for the low resolution, along with likely getting cut off by the overscan. It is interesting to see how many newer games can be modded to support 4:3 though.

>>744686312I'll give you the rundown as someone who's owned nearly 30 of these over the course of the past several years, flipping between hating and loving them several times. You can just ignore the worthless disingenuous posts in this thread, particularly this one. >>744687695You should only bother with consumer CRT TVs if you have the hardware that natively works with it. Old consoles, MiSTer, etc. Don't bother hooking it up to your PC because it's going to look like shit and will be a giant headache getting it working at all. If your goal is to emulate off of your PC, save yourself the headache and just get a VGA CRT monitor. The lowest resolution a modern GPU can produce is 480p (progressive scan) and the highest a consumer SDTV can recieve is 480i (interlaced). You need to go jump through a million chutes and ladders to get a 480p signal down to something a consumer TV can understand. Don't bother hooking these things up PCs, just grab a Wii and emulate on that and plug into the TV, be done with it.With that out of the way, it depends on how picky you are about picture quality. These things warp and wobble all over the place, and expensive PVMs are not exempt from this. In my personal opinion, if you're planning on playing 2D games, forget about CRTs at all. Side-scrolling content will contract and shrink horizontally and it's really jarring. The CRTs that have the circuitry to compensate for this are well outside of your price range and too rare for you to find anyways. Stick with OLED or if you want the motion clarity you get from CRTs, get a Plasma TV. They are still very affordable used. 3D content is where these things really shine, racing and action games in particular. If you can get over the interlacing flicker, a CRT TV is the best way to experience the PS2 library. Play Gran Turismo 4 on a CRT then in an emulator and you will understand. I can go forever on this. Anything else you are wondering about?
>>744686312I can't even find a consensus on using a crt TV as a monitor. Obviously you could just buy a crt monitor, but it's not going to look right for anything that was designed for a tv at the time.

>>744686312at the most basic level old hardware works best with the hardware they were intended to be used with.it isn't a wild concept, just pair things like that and you will have a good results, sure there are some crossover hardware like the xbox 360 and ps3 but generally that stuff is better off with the hdmi output as it doesn't need an analog to digital conversion.
>>744688162>You need to go jump through a million chutes and ladders to get a 480p signal down to something a consumer TV can understand. Don't bother hooking these things up PCs, just grab a Wii and emulate on that and plug into the TV, be done with it.Every PC supports HDMI these days, and a cheap HDMI to AV converter with some composite cables will get the job done.

>>744686312Beautiful picture for any game or video, not just retro stuff.ZERO added A/V lag (not applicable to HD CRT TVs.)Better motion clarity than what any modern display tech offers.Produces "true" blacks like an OLED when set up correctly.BUTLow resolution, HD CRT TVs don't go above 1080i and you'll find it hard to find a monitor at a fair price that reaches 2048x1536 (although CRTs produce a more pleasant picture than LCDs and even OLEDs at equal resolutions.)Low refresh rates compared to modern LCD panels, and refresh rates under ~70hz will strain your eyes over time.Image may be too dim in a bright room, especially if brightness and contrast is set for proper blacks.Sony had a patent on the best looking display type (aperture grille/Trinitron) so the competition had to use an inferior type (shadow mask) until the patent ran out, right around when LCDs took over. There's also the weight and size issue, but that's pretty obvious.

>>744689112Any console that works on a CRT is going to be what? 480p tops? And the average CRT is for retro console gaming.
CRTs are mandatory for real hardware. If you're emulating you could in theory route the image to a CRT but frankly that sounds like a hassle and the gain would be primarily motion clarity.

>>744691512>480hz OLEDVery expensive, but I'm glad to hear we've finally gotten to that point.
>>744691782When I say proper I mean rolling BFI solutions. For 60 fps you would display 1/8th of a frame at a time which would drastically improve brightness not only on a perceived scale, but OLEDs have a much easier time displaying brighter objects when only a portion of the screen is used.

>>744692038Depends entirely on your viewing distance.
>>744691916It has been a while since I've looked. How widely available is that. I feel like even then, the brightness would be way lower than some random OEM CRT monitor from 2008. Unless using the BlurBusters CRT shader meme that just allows highlights to persist for extra frames to increase their perceived brightness, but then the>ghosting of white on black at high speedsjust becomes a selectively smeared mess instead.

>>744692193Yes we need more like that but with a little bit bigger size and effort. Also something like the Checkmate but cheaper.
There's not any mystery to it.Games that were developed for SD resolutions look best on SD screens, especially CRTs, which is the way the developers designed these games around.HD games are mesnt to bendisplayed on HD screens, which are usually LCD/plasma/oled etc modern screens (though HD CRTs also exist, not sure about those)There's not much else to it unless you want to debate latency.
>>744692167>How widely available is thathttps://github.com/blurbusters/crt-beam-simulator and if you are in the business of consoles or older PCs.https://retrorgb.com/retrotink-4k-pro-crt-beam-emulation.htmlRetrotink 4K is limited by its FPGA to 1080p/240Hz but this is just a case of tech lagging behind monitors. Retrotink also compensates with its HDR injection, forcing the monitors to run brighter than the usual SDR mode.
>>744692412>the BlurBusters CRT shader meme that just allows highlights to persist for extra frames to increase their perceived brightnessThat's not "1/8 of a frame at a time".
>>744692380>Games that were developed for SD resolutions look best on SD screensThis is literally not true. See PS2 emulation with higher res....or launch something like Half-Life and compare 480p (the target res in 1998 with Win95) with anything current resolution.

>>744697246finding a decent set with component in and progressive scan has been almost impossible for me in australia and i spent years doing it. even then, you have to fight with worn out tubes with next to no brightness, ones where the image collapses on you (i had one basically shrink until the image became a single dot), then ones you think might have some cool features like progressive scan and 1080i but you only get standard def (similar to pictured, but no HD or PS, also really stupid grey pillarboxes that burn in with 4:3 content)
>>74469810916:9 and enhanced definition CRTs are a meme. Not only do they have more geometry issues than 4:3 the support for 16:9 was poor at best until the 7th gen which already offer 1080p games you cannot fully enjoy on a CRT. As for enchanced definition CRTs these are not only rare but the few that support it usually show interlaced content like shit. Ideally you'd have two separate CRTs for 15 kHz and 31 KHz content, but frankly fuck that shit. Anything 480p and beyond is going on my OLED.
