And I'm absolutely certain that he tried his best to convince Nintendo to give him something to work with so his own personal investment in these characters could shine through. Realistically, he was probably paid enough to comfortably retire, and Nintendo wanted to recast him before he croaked so that they wouldn't be burdened with the weight of recasting him post-mortem. His "Ambassador to Mario" position is likely just an easy paycheck so he stays happy. It's a "keep him happy, but replace him while he's alive" move to avoid controversy or fan backlash. You could probably imagine how much protesting from fans there would be if he died as Mario's active VA or got fired outright.
