I'll agree that game design hasn't changed much since the 7th generation. The Souls genre started back then for example, and it is still largely the same today; just "bigger." A lot of other genres are the same. The core philosophy for their game design either reached its mechanical peak during the 7th gen, or outright started in that era.
I'll say that games as a whole beyond their actual game design have changed for the worse, though. Modern games are garbage and gaming has never ever been worse.

I played this game for an entire month straight before the player base fizzled out. The 16 player Battle Royal mode was so unbelievably chaotic, shit was fun.
Charging in with Garuda, grabbing two players and scoring a double kill fucking flooded my brain with dopamine

A game like Anarchy Reign would get released as a remaster and nobody would tell it's an old game.
It's basically like those modern games kids play, freefire, overwatxch etx but with good controls and gameplay
