>JJJ was always the embodiment of extremely biased/dishonest corporate media that often distorts the truth or straight up lies to push a narrative (in his case, "Spiderman/masked vigilantes bad")>fuck, can't have such problematic and dangerous concepts in the Current Year™>wait I know, let's just make him a full schizo on the internet, a deranged Alex Jones parody with a dumb conspiracy theory podcast and allThis will never stop being funny
And yet he didn't sell out Peter while being threatened by the Green Gobbler. Curious.
>>744701497Because he's a masked villain. Sure writing and motivations both change over time but JJJ isn't generally against superheroes (he often simps for the Avengers), he just believes secret identities are the issue. He sees Spiderman (like every other masked vigilante) as a potential villain, a legitimate threat. Doesn't mean he has to compromise his integrity for the first villain that shows up, he's still man of principles in his view.
>>744701497>>744701339According to Ditko the yellow press is an outright villainous concept there to turn the world against the good because they’re cowards at heart. When Ditko left they softened JJJ a lot by giving him a black best friend with a heart of gold and pretty much made him the perfect news man who just had a blind eye with his hatred towards spider-man. The first game leans into this by having him predict a decent amount of things that were going to be done to the city because of the silver sable team
>>744703624>the yellow press is an outright villainous concept there to turn the world against the good because they’re cowards at heartI mean was he wrong
>>744701497JJJ contrary to the beliefs of redditors isnt racist or cowardly. He fought for civil rights during a time when doing that wasnt popular. He loves heroes and people who serve. He doesnt hate mutants. What he hates is vigilantes and the lack of accountability they have. E.g. he would be 100% fine with Thor but hates Spiderman and especially Punisher.
>>744701339Alex Jones parody radio guy is just a kino way to do exposition. Human Revolution did it, Crysis 2 did it, Prey had Art Bell himself dishing dirt on the events of the game. It's just generally a good idea and a fun time.
>>744701339>>extremely biased/dishonest corporate media that often distorts the truth or straight up lies to push a narrativeYou seriously think fox news and alex jones didnt do this?
>>744704326The issue with repurposing JJJ that way is that it inevitably strips him of corporate legitimation.Spiderman is just a single guy with almost 0 respect and no money at all, fighting the good fight alone, while JJJ was the total opposite, a famous and well respected, well funded mainstream figure. Instead he's reduced to a rambling madman on the internet, while Spiderman is more popular than ever (at least in the first game), which simply breaks the dynamic.
>>744703624Phil Sheldon is based.
>>744704326Don't forget about Days Gone!
>>744701339Yeah, I thought it didn't fit his character at all. JJJ is not a conspiracy theorist. He doesn't like Spiderman and thinks that he brings danger to the city. He basically views it as a chicken and the egg thing, but this is Spiderman and Villains. He does not think Villains came first, and now Spiderman is here to stop them. He thinks Spiderman stopped some low level crooks so now they're all getting octopus arms and pumpkin bombs.Obviously JJJ is an asshole and we identify with Spiderman, but at no point did JJJ come across as some crazy retard who talks about outright conspiracy theories. His main purpose was to give Peter a "Me against the World, but I still do the right thing" mentality. Like even the MEDIA is against him! But JJJ doesn't come across as a member of the media, he comes across as a lunatic ranting to 5 viewers on youtube.
>>744701339>character is meant to be fake news propaganda machine >lets make him fake news propaganda machine waow
>"It is not. I resent that. Slander is spoken. In print, it's libel."https://youtu.be/XscaGDxuQqEWhy can't they make movies like this anymore?
>>744704852I bet they 100% thought about making the Daily Bugle a Fox News parody. But they quickly realized that making a Fox News parody 100% implies needing a CNN/MSNBC parody as well to balance things out; otherwise, the only mainstream news source you're depicting is biased and full of crap, which sounds like you're dissing MSM in general, which is a dangerously Trump-adjacent position with his whole "you're all fake news" rhetoric (and they sure as hell didn't want to appear as pandering to the Trump crowd). So they needed to make up new "good side of the MSM" OCs and expand the lore just to include a fairly marginal character; not worth it, simply making him Alex Jones was the quickest route, despite clearly clashing with his character
>>744701339>>744704926Podcasts are mainstream corporate media now
>>744702960>Spidermanpicrelthat aside i thought jj was pretty honest except for masked vigilantes which is where he sells most of his sensationalism
>>744704008Has there been a story where Peter has clobbered the wrong guy and had JJJ be proved right? The realistic reason as to why Vigilante justice is looked down on, is that it is too easy to manipulate the guy who is doing it. To be sure you have the right guy. Instead of the guy who was walking while black a street away.
>>744704326Lazarus from Human Revolution was obviously Rush Limbaugh, complete with his imaginary friend Snerdly.
>>744705423Now? Maybe, but it clearly weren't in 2014-2015, which is roughly when they started making the game. Don't forget the game is also set almost a decade ago.
>>744701339the bugle was a pretty obvious parody of the New York Post which is the scummiest, sleaziest, most openly biased and most blatantly jewish newspaper in the entire world.maybe they changed it for cultural sensitivity reasons.
>>744704008Probrem is then he has so much bigger fish to fry then. Instead of Spiderman he should be focusing on Punisher and Ghost Rider. Not to mention that Fisk and Capt'n America should have gotten him killed ages ago for his ethics.
I prefer his characterization in the Raimi movies where he's actually a respectable journalist aside from his hateboner for Spiderman and his poor temper. But if we go by his characterization as a dishonest tabloid hack, making him an Alex Jones style shock jock is the logical place to depict him in a modern setting.
>>744705882Punisher is not a masked vigilante, his identity is well known. Also everyone already considers him a maniac. Spider-man is more famous, stronger, not really unpopular, and has a secret identity. He's the bigger fish according to Jameson's logic. Also it probably sells more to shit on Spidey
>>744705539>Instead of the guy who was walking while black a street away.
THEY'RE TURNING THE FRICKEN SPIDERS GAY
>>744706108>dishonest tabloid hackthat's still what he is in the raimi movies. the writers had the sense to not make him a complete joke and maintain some integrity as an oldschool industry guy, but an actually respectable journalist wouldn't bruteforce a vendetta to sell papers.
>>744701339>writters nowadays are retarded and are incapable of nuance wow op, no way
>>744704326Prey having what are basically exclusive mini-episodes of Coast to Coast throughout the game is probably my favorite feature of any game ever. More games need to shell out the money to get real people to do their usual work in the context of a game's setting.
>>744701339I could definitely see a version Jonah getting into that to be fair. Some versions of him were grifters and some JUST had a problem with Spiderman and others were inbetween.
>>744701339Why are Spiderman threads getting spammed everyday? I thought people gave up after that Miles morales shitty game
>>744708034Movie marketing, duh
>>744705882Other NYC heros are either already notorious or basically a myth, while Spidey is a friendly public mask that everyone lovesTheres no point to trying to turn the populace against someone like Daredevil who is basically a drug dealer's bogeyman, or Frank who's already on the most wanted list
>>744705882Fisk should have died eons ago. Hes a relic of a time when people thought fat mobsters were the pinnacle of evil
>>744709291You can't really call him a relic, now that America is run by a fat mobster.
>>744705379But they did have a competing podcast, which could have just been a competing news source based on your logic
>>744709487Not in the first game they didn't
>>744701339The reason he's a podcaster is because newspapers are dead.
>>744704008>What he hates is vigilantes and the lack of accountability they have. E.g. he would be 100% fine with Thor but hates Spiderman and especially Punisher. All that shit got retconned long ago. He hates Spider-man because he wears a mask.
>>744701497Almost like the Raimi movie and other adaptations are different things.
In the original comics, it's very clear. The Amazing Spider-Man #10 even has JJJ admit it to himself, and this was in 1963.
>>744705379The truth is far more simple and boring than that. Insomniac just copied current events in the comics where JJJ was no longer running the Bugle but was still hounding Peter via his blog, Threats and Menaces.
>>744710578>Insomniac just copied current events in the comics Then the comics guys are the ones that went through that same thought process
>>744711129Bro, the Bugle is pretty much the only newspaper Marvel has. Shit, I doubt anyone could name a competitor company until Eddie Brock showed up.
>>744711267>Bro, the Bugle is pretty much the only newspaper Marvel hasIndeed. You got a single fictional newspaper, your only depiction of legacy mainstream media in that field, and you portray it as a dishonest, unreliable, sensationalist rag that notoriously spreads fake news (at least, the readers know it does, while the fictional general public largely trusts it)? It's dangerously MAGA-adjacent as a concept, it accidentally reinforces their worldview.Half the current comics environment was recruited a decade ago on Tumblr and they absolutely despise the idea of writing something that vaguely agrees with the american right.Which means the Bugle (and JJJ) needed to shift from an old-school critique/parody of crooked mainstream media, to something currently approved by their side and hated by their perceived adversaries. American right wingers seemingly distrust legacy media while preferring alternative sources (blogs, podcasts, internet-based stuff), so JJJ had to be repurposed within that framing.
>>744712529It's funny because you could do it just fine now, that almost all American media has been consolidated under Trump.
/co/ is love
>>744712529Anon, the Bugle practically being the only news rag in Marvel predates your /pol/ induced schizophrenia. Also, Threats and Menaces isn't a separation from the Bugle to be whatever retard rambling you're on about. Jameson stepped away from the Bugle to become the mayor of NYC, handing it over to Robertson. Following the end of his mayoral career he couldn't just go "haha j/k I didn't really wanna give up the bugle" but still wanted to rant about Spider-man, hence the blog.
>>744712645Yeah, maybe they'll go back to that at some point.
>>744712709>Anon, the Bugle practically being the only news rag in Marvel predates your /pol/Read my post again.
>>744701339You got issues dude.
>>744712645Trump is such a winner. Libshits are so pathetic lol
>>744712753I don't have to. Everything about Jameson leaving the bugle to play at Mayor started in 2009, which predates Trump's first term, and him making his blog was during Biden's. It does not in any way intersect with maga shit at all.
>>744712529I think you're reading too much into it. it'd be very easy to portray the bugle as a politically neutral crank tabloid that's contrived to be more popular because spiderman is relevant to it. people don't think ny times and cnn when they see the bugle, they see nypost.
>>744709291Ok then, so "Fisk" should be a cadre of men with funny hats and big noses who like to rub their hands to adapt his image to a more modern time.
>>744701497FPBP. When push comes to shove, JJJ is an alright guy
>>744709291He should have died eons ago because he operates on a city that's riddled with bigger fish than him and that's not counting the absurd amount of superheroes crawling out of the woodwork.
>>744704326>>744707361Yeah, I didn’t like OG Prey as whole that much, but man, those Coast to Coast bits were damn great for the atmosphere and an absolute genius idea from who ever though about asking Bell to do them.
>>744701339>>JJJ was always the embodiment of extremely biased/dishonest corporate media that often distorts the truth or straight up lies to push a narrative (in his case, "Spiderman/masked vigilantes bad")I mean, he has a point. I get Spidey is trying to do the right thing, but a vigilante being allowed to operate above the law with nobody knowing his identity or anyone holding him accountable is a recipe for disaster. Just look at the clusterfuck that ICE is for proof.
>>744701339I think it makes sense in the current media landscape where podcasts are basically the new format for news/culture consumption. I like the idea of an independent JJJ podcast show.
>>744712856That's not true. He goes back to being a journalist in 2014, except he's in TV now. So another mainstream media outlet. By the time Trump started spreading his anti-MSM rhetoric (which mainly targeted TV networks), writers started wrapping up that phase of the character and setting up the next one. JJJ went from TV pundit to internet personality in 7 months after Trump's inauguration, which roughly matches the time between the conceptualization of a small comicbook arc to shipping the comic in stores. The timeframe lines up.
Funny thing is, Eddie Brock never worked for the Daily Bugle in the comics. He worked for the Daily Globe, a rival newspaper. Ironically, that's one thing the venom movies actually got right. But whenever they adapt him elsewhere, they always make him work at the Daily Bugle, which just feels like a cheap way to give Eddie Brock a connection to Peter. In the comics, they didn't even know each other before Eddie became Venom. Changing it so they both work at the Daily Bugle just makes the Marvel Universe feel smaller.
>>744713394hey look, a perfect example of yellow journalism and the media lying. good point anon. they lie about ICE constantly.
>>744713464In one way, I hate the change because I see JJJ as newspaper man and have hard time seeing him as anyone else, but yeah, if you want to depict a blazing media personality using emotional arguments to agitate people against something in a very unsubtle way, podcaster is the perfect modern world format for that. So, podcast JJJ makes all the sense if you want to portray a modern-day PR opponent to Spidey, I just personally don’t know whether I want for Spider-Man to ”stay modern”.
>>744701339JJJ definitely had his schizo moments (his first appearance he accuses Spider-Man of faking saving his astronaut son from the space shuttle) but he was nowhere near being an Alex Jones/right wing parody. Definitely leaned more to being a tabloid journalist
>>744713607Except that in 2014 Otto was SpOck and Jameson was pro-spidey, which doesn't line up with the narrative at all.
>>744713661Normalfags would just get confused and think the Daily Bugle and Daily Globe are the same thing anyway.
>>744701339nobody tell this nigga about the new movies
>>744705813>which is the scummiest, sleaziest, most openly biased and most blatantly jewish newspaper in the entire world. That's the enquirer
>>744713883>I'm too retarded to tell two different companies apart so everyone else must be just as stupid as meRetard
>>744713837Except Peter got his body back in mid-2014, and JJJ starts attacking him again with a full smear campaign as soon as he realizes what happened (which is pretty soon). By the time Trump announces his presidential run and starts attacking mainstream TV as biased and "fake", the main depiction of cable news networks in Marvel comics is a very biased JJJ working for "Fact Channel", which ironically promoted fake news (in the Silk comic).I'm sure you can see why having your main in-universe media guy echoing the media-related accusations of a prominent IRL populist politician could be considered problematic for the writers.
>>744713394Well, they aren't vigilantes, aren't they? They are very blatantly the personal henchmen of the Republican Party, i.e. the US government.
>>744714337Capeshit writers regardless of side have always been extremely out-of-touch and creatively bankrupt. Remember at one point 99% of DC/Marvel were fighting Adolf Hitler. Batman, Captain Marvel, Superman, Namor, Captain America all fighting some Germans.
>>744714469That's because comics were employed to spread propaganda. I remember reading the US government used DC comics to promote war bonds and savings stamps during WW2. Pretty sure Cap was specifically created for that purpose
Alls I know is he needs photosPhotos of spider-man or something
>>744714337>By the time Trump announces his presidential run and starts attacking mainstream TV as biased and "fake", the main depiction of cable news networks in Marvel comics is a very biased JJJ working for "Fact Channel", which ironically promoted fake news (in the Silk comic).Anon, there is nothing before or after that establishes the fact channel as "promoting fake news" beyond JJJs bias against spider-man, and even then JJJ's hate is portrayed less as news and more as pretty clear ranting. Other reporting instances they show of the channel were pretty matter of fact neutral, like introducing Parker Industries before getting interrupted by Black Cat or the dockside shit that Electro did. In the Silk comics, which came out a year later, he does a mix of both ranting about Spider-man and sucking Cindy's cock, but both of these are presented to the reader as ramblings he does as a personal conversation with Cindy away from the camera.
>>744701339>That comic where he explains to Spider-Man that it's the mask he hates, that his wife was attacked by a masked man and it helped hide his identity so the police couldn't catch him.Like others have said, he just hates that it makes Peter Parker unable to be accountable for what Spider-Man does.
>>744710378>they deal with the consequences of their actions! like real heroes!>you wear it so you don't have to answer to anyone!comic book readers not being able to read lol
>>744716229Anon read the post above yours. Moreover he literally has zero problems with Captain America even though he too does vigilante shit when he's not avenging anything, because his name is a matter of public record. Same shit with Thor, same shit with Punisher. It's his whole secret identity shtick that's supported by the mask that Jonah hates about him.
>>744712529people have been shitting on fox news and tabloid "journalism" long before you were even a sperm cell.
>>744716328because the mask allows him to dodge accountability. it is the physical object that shields him from the consequences of his actions
>>744715868>there is nothing before or after that establishes the fact channel as "promoting fake news" beyond JJJs bias against spider-manexcept the whole clone conspiracy fiasco you mean. they literally spread fake informations to the masses (although JJ was conned as well and actually believed in them)
>>744716395Actually the mask protects the people close to him. Peter wouldnt give a fuck if everyone knew he was Peter Parker and he had no one to love or protect. Hes strong enough that most superhumans and regular humans know how dangerous he is. Some fat politician could employ Seal Team 6 to kill Spidey and it would mean nothing to him. He just doesnt want MJ or May or someone else caught in the crossfire. DC doesnt have this issue. Batman in all honesty could be exposed as Bruce Wayne and he would still have a multitude of resources to fall back on.
>>744716523>Actually the mask protects the people close to him.correct, by shielding them from the consequences of being associated with spiderman.
>>744716395How can you hold Thor legally accountable? The man is literally a god from another dimension.
>>744701339Podcast grifters have more influence than any newspaper. This is exactly what JJ would pivot to if he was real.
>>744716613only way to do it is have like, super police and super prison. call in government sanctioned heroes to arrest him and hope it works basically.
>>744703624Ditko was unironically right about the media though. It's filled with pretty vile people who will casually spread lies to influence popular opinion on subjects and other times just to have a juicy story to spread. Truth was never in the equation with these fuckers. However much you hate journos, you don't hate them enough.
>>744716717Just have gods older than asgardians go kill him. like how he's currently dead in the comics.
>>744701339Jonah should be a character with some nuance. Yes he has a huge complex about masked capes but outside of that he's an honest newsman.
>>744701497He likes Peter, he is hardworking, tries his best and always delivers and he knows he's Spiderman, he just hates spider man to keep him accountable and boost his ratings
>>744716613Thor does something bad>Gets ostracized and shunned>Can no longer freely mingle on Earth without people antagonizing him>Relations with Asgard get strained>Overall makes Thor's life worseSpiderman does something bad>Takes the mask of while heat dies down>Gets a nice sandwich at his favorite deli
>>744716556Actually its being associated with Peter Parker who happens to be Spiderman. If you believe “death by association” is a verdict then nearly all of NYC should be drawn and quartered for their crimes.
>>744703624>According to Ditko the yellow press is an outright villainous concept there to turn the world against the good because they’re cowards at heart. When Ditko left they softened JJJ a lot by giving him a black best friend with a heart of gold and pretty much made him the perfect news man who just had a blind eye with his hatred towards spider-man. Fun fact about JJ, he was said to be based on Stan Lee himself. Peter literally sells his own body and work to JJ so that he can profit off it, only getting a small piece of the pie himself. Sound familiar? There's a reason Stan Lee was the only happy "creator" at Marvel let's just say
Marvel already gave a solution for how Peter can deal with Jonah's mask autism.
>>744701339>in his case, "Spiderman/masked vigilantes bad"In all fairness anonymous masked vigilantism is 100% a crime in New York, and Jameson is just being a law abiding citizen.
>>744701339>but I like my extremely biased/dishonest NON-corporate media that often distorts the truth or straight up lies to push a narrative
/co/ won
>>744701339All they did was adapt him for the modern era, dumbass.
/co/ fucked /v/
>>744717353>If someone makes up shit about my country they're liars!>But I'll make up shit about your country and it's the truth!Americans are a joke.
/co/ got /v/ pregnant
>>744716613You dont. Tony tried to arrest him in Civil War and almost died.
>>744717079>you heard black face, now get ready for spider face
>>744713789even in Ultimate(the one with spider dad) JJJ and Ben Parker teamed up to start a digital journalism business.
>>744718138There's a few extenuating factors that lead to that choice though.1) they never wanted to stop being journalists, they just didn't want to compromise their integrity. At the same time, they didn't want everyone else at the Bugle to suffer because of them rebuking Fisk, so they just quit instead. 2) they couldn't do podcasts because they could only transmit in short bursts.
