What's the /v/erdict on Magic the Gathering? The Japan-only Magic: the Gathering game is pretty kino
just play Shandalar, bro
>>744712059What was that mtg game that had a school setting and was kind of like a yuhgioh game?
>>744712059i have multiple friends who swear every other month they're QUITTING MAGIC because of one thing or another, and constantly fighting each other over cheap or OP decks (tiers?), but none of them ever actually quit and have even tried getting me into itit's like the worst kind of battered wives and drug addicts put together from what i can tell
died after ravnica (2005)
>>744712059>What's the /v/erdict on Magic the Gathering?A fine card game but it just doesn't have 'the sauce' like YGO, an objectively worse game
Peaked during and died after Amonkhet
>>744712059The game changed so drastically after Odyssey block. Card art went from clean and simple hand painted pieces to CGI heavy flash and pizazz. The colour backgrounds lightened and took on a metallic looking element. The card stock was thinned out and almost rubberized. The foils started to curl and split from the card stock. The soul of the game USED to be 'you get your army out, I get my army out, we hold our trump and crush cards, have a big battle, let everything resolve and see what happens'. It was very thematic: elves, goblins, Knights, angels, zombies, barbarians, Merfolk, dragons, slivers, etc. There was a motif. There was a 'point'. The game itself was usually just a vehicle for buddies to do something while hanging out and chilling and shooting the shit and mostly just keeping out of trouble or out of the house.I don't think it's a coincidence that the corners getting cut at a logistical level : quality of cardstock, thin curly foils, over designed artwork that looks mass produced and rushed, the constant hamfisting of convoluted keywords and mechanics, the absolute skyrocketing of nom-Booster pack products, the watering down of lore and storytelling, the invention of mythic rares and planes walkers, the turn zero combos, the meta being one of three decks, each with the sideboard designed to fuck over those other two decks, and all designed to go boom before turn four, anything after turn 5-6 being treated as "late game" was happening around the same time/within a few short years of each other. The game used to be about high fantasy and imagination and creative innovation, taking time to set up armies or fun combinations, spending time with your bros, having something to look forward at recess, lunch, breaks, after school, FNM, local tournaments and drafts. Now its just "spend $3000 for a 'budget' tournament level deck, but you'll need one of each of the meta decks that change every 60-90 days before considerations like ban lists."
>>744716967Things like rule changes about the "stack" changing order of spell resolution happened because of Mirari in Odyssey. The rule change about mana burn and negative life happened after 7th/around Mirrodin block because of Platinum Angel. (Stack rule change also affected this).I have a hate list of reasons that go back decades before even the dumbest shit these days like commander and UB.It isn't the same game anymore. It's ADHD/OCD compulsive gambler play styles wrapped in anti-consumer whale and scalper consumer spending wrapped in an MTG skinsuit.
I don't enjoy mtg anymore because feature creep made it too tedious to keep track of everything.I liked simple kitchen table mtg with my friends.Even in a casual group, it's very difficult to recreate this feeling with modern cards because everything is bloated with effects.I always thought it's a me issue but it was pretty amusing to see a clip of some finalists in a sanctioned tournament taking a while to make sense of the board state.I thought commander would be a fun way to enjoy the game again on a casual level but that format is even more cancerous in that regard.
>>744712059>Japan-onlyWhy are the Japanese allowed to have fun, but we are not?
>>744712059What are some trading card games like MTG that are strictly single player, no microtransactions, and you just play against the AI to get new cards?
>>744719124All the GBA/NDS Yu-gi-oh games.
>>744721609Are they enjoyable on such a low resolution? Can you properly read cards?
magic peaked during the hobbit
>>744721672Get the tag team games for the PSP / PS2, you will have a blast
>>744712059I was never too deep into it and completely lost interest when it became Fortnite.
>>744712059I miss going to locals to play modern. I’d even take standard back at this pointEvery store near me just does commander on Fridays and I fucking hate it.
>>744712059I played the Duel Masters PS2 game expecting something cool and got the most budget shit imaginable. The card game itself wasn't bad, just needed more cards for variety's sake.
>>744712059I started playing it pretty late (when arena was getting out of beta so at the end of 2017) all things considered it went from something I thought about everyday to something I pick up once or twice a week when I feel like it
>>744712059I play forge on my phone during down time at work.
>>744712059not vidya
>>744712059All I know is that's the game with LGBT / black elves and shit. I don't mess with westoid fantasy shit because it's all like that.
>>744712059Back then only the greasiest 'hey, age is just a number, she is a thousand-year old loli' fatso nerds would play MTG, now it is solely populated by fags, fags in denial and fags that take hormones and become trannies. It is the epithome of faggotry and WOTC is a huge cancer. It is tainted forever.
