The party seeks to defeat the enemy human enemies, not kill them, and if they die due to defeating then so be it, but there's a dfiference in intent. To seek to kill them just like that would be kinda psycho and the party who's all about the lifestream and stuff wouldnt do that. Like, can you even imagine Tifa like going to a defeated Reno, hold him down and ask Cloud to stab him so Reno can die? no way.In those scenes where Cloud kills people and acts psycho is not about Cloud killing people, it is about the bloodlust. He kills someone who's begging for life, who already surrendered and is already defeated, that's why Tifa tries to stop him, that's not something normal people do.

That’s just how JRPGs roll. Quirky miniboss squads are treated like frenemies even if they do horrible stuff, characters that show the slightest bit of redemption or are just cool enough get off scott free, and a very heavy aura of ”if you kill them, you’re just as bad” hovers over the entire genre.In fact, it’s only safe to kill the villains if they first turn into some inhuman monstrosity, that’s a sign that it’s OK to deal with them. And I like the genre, but that’s just how it usually goes, protagonists are utter pussies with revenge.
