Gamergate was the final nail in the coffin when we went full gossip board. It was a slow transformation from video game discussion to discussion about what people are saying about video games. You don't have to play video games to participate in the later, you just have to read and repost the spicy gossip which everyone can do. With less of a hobby focus and more of a gossip newsfeed focus, it's no wonder the board lost it's sincerity and whimsy. After all, half the userbase is here now to gawk at freaks.
