Most likely it's a straightforward remake beyond the additional narrative focus and the artstyle change. Nintendo doesn't usually "do" remakes unless it's training new staff to make specific styles of video game. The biggest exceptions I can think of were the Mario & Luigi remakes, made to modernize their combat to Dream Team's standard and because AlphaDream was trying to hail-mary themselves out of bankruptcy anyways.
