I remembered they said they didn't want to release SteamOS for Desktops because of the lack of Nvidia support (I think I inferred it as the drivers were bad and weren't FOSS enough for them to fix things on Linux). I know nvidia has an MIT licensed driver for their cards, but conflicting information on that seems to be they're begrudgingly FOSSing it or it's not truly FOSS in the same way AMD's drivers are. Idk to me it's not like a Valve engineer could bring the FOSS drivers to Maxwell and Pascal like what they did with those "Radeon GCN GPUs" before, because it's not really an actual driver for the GPU?

I think there's a translation layer that converts GL and Vulkan to Metal? From what I understand though it has some overhead and it can't actually implement everything because Metal is shit.
Native macOS games do exist in a limited capacity but since Apple likes to break ABI on every new major version for no reason they have the tendency to just stop working eventually and never get fixed.
Anyways, macOS doesn't have proton or the steam play compat when you install Steam on macOS. There *is* a third-party solution that runs games in a WINE prefix and proxies steam_api to the native client but it requires even more manually assembly to get working than average Linux problems.
If you have a mac that supports Asahi you'll probably have a much better experience using that with FEX or box86/64.

Their entire real business model (not counting the fake AI slop business model which is purely a stock market scam) depends on a separation of their enterprise and consumer cards, even though they are often the same product. Enabling greater Linux support means that people start breaking down this separation, which ends up cannibalizing both markets.
If a consumer card can offer features like vGPU, then enterprise may choose to use that if the pricing and support for enterprise GPUs isn't favorable, and vice versa the consumers may start using refurbished enterprise GPUs if they just werk.
