Luckily it's not a straight ubishit open world. It's classic dark souls dungeons and locations WITH ubishit open world parts glued to it. So you have the great intertwined labyrinthine levels and then on the side big spaces with nuggets of reused content à la ubishit.

Opposite for me. I was coping for the first few days after release before I realized how shit the game was

The worst game to NG+. When you've done grinding your weapons and levels you realize just how much of the game's content is just meaningless fluff and how little there is when it comes to legacy content, i.e proper boss fights and dungeons. But it was fun for the first time I went through it. Not a game I'll ever replay though.

2026 and From Soft still hasn't figured out how to make their weapon skills actually viable. There are like a handful out of hundreds in Elden Ring that are viable and good, but most are pretty awful with commitments that will only make you die 100% of the time. Meanwhile in Nioh-land you can build into any skill and they are all viable.
>>
>>744862002

>>744862002
It's the first FROM ARPG that isn't downright atrocious to play, unfortunately it still carries a lot of Souls DNA but it's showing that they're finally starting to move on.
It's basically the Last Raven of Souls, the culmination of a classic formula stretched to its limits, with all its peaks and lows.

That's just the trend they are going for. Even giant monsters can't be slow and lumbering anymore. Every single enemy no matter how big or small has to have the speed and agility of Spiderman so they can easily side step away from your attacks. Doesn't matter if it's a giant mammoth, their movement scheme is tied to Quake.

it's okay, was very fun in seamless co-op and has a better sense of progression and discovery than a bunch of open world games, plus even a bad fromsoft soulsborne game is still generally more interesting to play than the average AAA action game imo

what i don't like it is how it's basically sekiro's opposite. sekiro is super sharp, tightly designed and punishing, elden ring is clearly making concessions for accessibility's sake and the open world nature of the game means that more than any other soulsborne game you have to deliberately kneecap yourself if you want a good level of challenge. It's also strange to me that they didn't take lessons from sekiro's combat like having more attacks that scream "jump over this" or a form of blocking that's more engaging so people don't feel compelled to refuse to do it
>>
>>744862002
Overdefended, but also overhated; a mixed bag.
One criticism i can give which can not be objectively refuted, is that open world is shit.
I've also started to value good exploration ( with proper level design ) more so than super epic hype boss fights.

nta - large stretches of the game are simply not very interesting even if visually there's some really pretty views. The few large "legacy dungeons" stand out as the shit I loved about previous games, they felt like properly designed challenges with even more options than past games a lot of the time which was great but then you got vast amounts of open areas with not a whole lot going on, sometimes 20+ hours of exploring to find some nook of the map with something interesting only for it to be over before in minutes. Too many copy paste crypts with only a handful having any unique features. The game is massive and has a ton of content but a lot of that content isn't very interesting. Despite the DLC feeling super empty at times and not liking the scaling system I did enjoy the more complex navigation required to explore the whole thing and less filler enemies. I spent a holiday with mattpat before the dlc dropped and when he asked me my thoughts on elden ring I told him I liked it but felt so drained after 200 hours of unguided play to the point where I don't see myself doing ng+ anytime soon while many of the previous titles and the newly released ac6 made me want to jump right into another playthrough almost right away.
>>
>>744867623
gadgets like that are sekiro's version of all of the different stuff in soulsborne games that let you get around the mechanical action game part of the difficulty and you choose how much you take advantage of them, i figure that's why they're on their own resource that doesn't just come back when you die

but abusing firecrackers or umbrellas or w/e is pretty much it as cheese goes in sekiro. if you don't do that the game has an exceptionally tight difficulty curve, whereas in elden ring if you're just doing a lot of open world content you have to consciously go "okay i'm not gonna use these tens of levels i'm getting from exploration" if you don't want the area boss to evaporate
>>
>>744867759
I'd argue they shat the bed with roughly a half of legacy dungeons too.
Stormveil and leyndell are great, albeit too easy. Elaphel and farum are decent.
But Raya Lucaria is insanely disappointing, just a narrow line barely even taking place inside an actual academy, it's mostly a lame graveyard, open plaza, and rooftops. Redmane is a literal dogshit, feels like a small fort elevated to legacy dungeon. Volcano Manor literally feels unfinished, with a teleporter in a corner of a random ass room two steps away from a site of grace taking you to a boss. Underground cities are all half-assed and exceedingly linear, with nothing interesting to find.

Hell i'd argue not a single DLC legacy dungeon is well-made, all of them continue this downward trend in terms of level design.

There was supposed to be a zone between Sen's Fortress and Anor Londo. Just look at the Golem's boss room. There's a obvious gateway behind it.

Miyazaki did this again in Elden Ring. They clearly focused on Limgrave as the first impression and rushed out the rest of the game

It's most visible in areas where they clearly cut corners and rushed it. ESPECIALLY with those shitty butthole teleports all over the fucking map.
>Divine Bridge to Godrick's rune - the bridge collapsed and someone decided to put a teleporter there to the other side? And it just pops you out of thin air without a teleporter back right there
>Redmane Castle - teleporter from outside the walls to the inside? Why does it exist? And also a teleporter from a beach to Radahn's arena
>Four Belfries have four teleports taking you to completely arbitrary nonsensical places with dead ends.
>Said Limgrave bridge has a lazily placed teleport ON A SLOPE so it's halfway into the ground, like a badly implemented mod, because the bridge is supposed to be whole.
>There is no natural way of getting to the Haligtree. If it was at least some Grand Lift level of unique asset, it would be forgivable, but this is YET AGAIN the shitty butthole teleport.
>Radahn castle and arena having those butthole teleports again.
>Shortcut to Maliketh in Caelid is a shitty teleport hidden in some bushes.

Limgrave map in Nightreign is clear communication that they think it's the best zone

I have been playing it for the last 1-2 months or so and I think it's fantastic, best game is the souls series so far.
Yes the bosses aren't as creative as they were in Demon's, and Sekiro's core combat and stealth gameplay are still unmatched, but overall nothing can touch this game.

I think the best thing about it is how all the offensive classes received various goodies this time around.
Strength is great with powerstancing and colossal weapons, dex is validated by the katanas alone.
Int received tons of great spells like Comet Azur and Night Comet, faith actually became a proper offensive class with the arrival of flame incantations and stuff like Stone of Gurranq and Pest Threads.
It feels like they even turned bows into a proper option this time around, due to weapons arts and also powerhouses like the Lion Greatbow.

I'm also really loving the world design, it's fun to go into a cave below Raya Lucaria and at the end you can take an elevator all the way up and you suddenly end up at the roof of the tallest tower in the middle of the academy.
Or you go into the woods and you find a big sleepy bear but after it's gone you find that it was sleeping on top of a hidden stairwell. It's small things like that that give it that sense of adventure.

The issue with modern bosses is that while they are getting progressively more complex features and movesets including god damned mid combo guard points, the player character is still stuck in a 2011 game mechanically. They either need to commit to the change and turn their games into action or roll the fuck back.

>Bosses aren't as creative
>A festival of war where the NPCs you've met throughout the adventure so far will can be summoned all to take on the champion who rides across the desert shooting gravity arrows at you and flies in on a meteor when he gets serious
>legendary witch now gone mentally ill hides behind a game of hide and seek with her children while dropping bits of the environment on you, then a spell is cast to return her to her prime and she fires off all the ultimate sorcery and summons giant monsters as you fight on the reflection of the moon
>Weakling Nobel who has stitched together all the strongest warriors to his body and halfway through the fight rips off a dragon's head and sticks it on to his body as an arm

I would say the bosses in ER are the most creative
>>

>but abusing firecrackers or umbrellas or w/e is pretty much it as cheese goes in sekiro
With all due respect, I don't think you have very indepth knowledge about Sekiro.
Even putting aside the completely broken prosthetics there's multiple sword techs like Reverse Nightjar or Ichimonji that also break enemy AI or are blatantly overtuned, Sekiro has animation reading so aggressive they had to patch the game multiple times because most enemies including SSI could be locked into an infinite autowin loop by alternating between parrying and a single R1 and while most of it has been patched by now it's still so aggressive to this day there's still abuses like sip loops, even some Ninjutsu completely breaks enemies because they have no answer to a lot of the shit you can do.
The worst part is that your tools are either completely broken or completely useless with no inbetween, mostly because outside of having bad balance in terms of numbers they forgot to design SOMETHING around some of them like in the Spear's case which has TWO enemies in the entire game with an actual interaction, or the axe which has literally just one enemy, the mooks with a wooden shield in the past section, with an actual interaction, the game is a complete mess of undercooked ideas.

Cringe.
>>each island has a dungeon that takes 4-5 hours to explore
Already experienced "4-5 hours to explore" dungeons in previous Souls games, so no thanks.
>>find companions along the way, can bring one along into dungeons
GIGA CRINGE. Normalfag shitter dumbed down casualization nonsense.

FromSoftware, if they ever make another Souls-ish game, should set it in a massive metroidvania labyrinthine giga structure that confuses the shit out of you normalfags and open-world slop subhumans.
>>
>>744862002
i saw golden age mod yesterday and despite it being a chinese theft mod i'm still looking at it like when are fromsoft going to make peak with their own assets, plus RWBYs scythe apparently holy fuck was that cool

elden ring itself is mid now and needs night reign mechanics to catch up to itself, at the least. and night reign still needs SOTE stuff, mods don't count when talking about official games. alternatively hire modders.

no vanilla seemless is bullshit also, consoles just suck and GPUs just tripled in price, guess ill go fuck myself

the map is really fun to explore, once, too. the whole formula is lacking something but its over my head what that could be, I used to think randomizing group formations and removing the origin anchors would help fill out the places we sprint on torrent between, like, ds2 used to punish enemy skippers. now you can just calmly boss rush the whole game pretty much.
>>
>>744869713
>if it weren't for the spirit emblem system, fuck that shit. It basically introduced a progressively heftier fee for even using prosthetics
That is S-Tier game design. Prosthetic tools are situational tools, not your main gameplay system, it should be limited, keep crying you low IQ subhumans, FromSoftware knows better.
>>
It was okay first time through. I always play blind and strength so it was a hell of a struggle since even on a strength build I'm not a great weapon user. Then I figured out guard counters and it became pretty cool.
On subsequent runs and reading how the game is actually played I couldn't believe it. Weapon arts builds are insane depth and replayability. Extremely fun.
My only gripe is that you don't get your third talisman slot until fairly late in the game. And that's if your build can live with only 3. It means if I get a new build in mind I got to dedicate like 20 hours of my life before I can even play it.
>>
>>744869713
Yeah, no idea why they had to scrape off Bloodborne for that either, but I guess using meter or cooldowns for prosthetics felt awkward to someone in the design team.
You can really see how Sekiro was supposed to be a Tenchu game that got completely redesigned mid development because they didn't have confidence in the Tenchu brand so they pivoted to the Souls community by making this weird inbred Tenchu Souls abomination that does neither sides well.
>>
to be honest, ds2 is still better than elden ring.
dark souls (except the worst one, 3) were all always open world basically.
ds3 is actually the worst one, because you're just warping to shitty dungeons that are actually just your whole run back.
>tl;dr
ds3 sucks and you're retarded if you like it.
>>
One of the best games of the last 10 years
>>
>>744869341
True but most of those are unique contextually, not necessarily gameplay-wise.
Maybe I'll grant Radahn because of his fuck-huge arena (and your own ability to ride Torrent there) but generally it's all pretty straight-up dual-type fights.
Whereas in Demon's you had shit like the Phalanx, a much slower boss which was more about thinking how to get past all those little things so you could hit the big blob.
Or those manta rays flying through the sky, or the final boss of the valley of defilement which was like something out of fucking Shakespeare.

The far majority of ER bosses are
>1 big strong guy
>huge arena
>go duke it out together
I mean, the way Rennala starts out was actually interesting, and then they went and made it another 1 on 1 duel again.
If for instance, rather than such a fight she would constantly teleport around the library (kinda like that witch in the grand archives from DS3), that would already have made for a more original fight.
One where you're not just trying to dodge hits and land your own but rather you're dodging long-range spells and trying to find the damn bitch wherever she's hiding out.
>>
>>744869675
There's literally no difference between guard counters in ER and simply attacking after guard in previous games. This entire mechanic didn't add or change jack shit, it's just a set of mildly flashier animations.
Rolling and iframes shit on both crouching and jumping, that shit is insanely situational and requires extensive amount of trial and error, unlocked forward dodging still breaks the ai of most bosses just like it did 15 years ago.

>Whereas in Demon's you had shit like the Phalanx
ER quite literally has Phalanx as a common enemy.
NOBODY likes Storm King either, which Rykard still references but manages to be the first good Storm King fight ever, and pretending that Astraea is the boss and not Garl Vinland in fucking 2026 is getting really old.
And no, most bosses in ER are not like your greentext either, largely because most bosses are either human sized or in tiny rooms, hard to say phase 2 of Rennala is a 1 on 1 either when her gimmick is that she can use her own spirit ashes like the wolves or the troll while pelting you from afar.
>One where you're not just trying to dodge hits and land your own but rather you're dodging long-range spells and trying to find the damn bitch wherever she's hiding out.

And yet that model is vastly superior to BB's bullets and talismans. You get enough ammo between checkpoints and get them back for free.

I mean, sure, but the game structure is so different it's pointless to compare them,
BB/Sekiro are open world action games while AC is a mission based game, there's no way you can fit bullets/talismans in AC's gameplay because it just doesn't make sense to have tradeable ammo in a game that is all about finite ammo you have to fit in an instanced mission, it's something they didn't even remotely consider implementing in AC6.

It takes two to tango, they are not the only party to blame, the primary blame lies with the masses of consumerist cultist cattle subhumans that purchase their "souls-like" slop instead of just sticking with the true and real Souls games made by FromSoftware. These subhumans could have bought Dark Souls, but didn't because it is "le old xD" and instead had their first souls experience with garbage like Lies of Piss and Wu Chang: Fallen Feathers.

Are you talking about that organization which told Nintendo to make Mario for mobiles and charge money for extra lifes or something like that? While those people are retarded, when I read the Kadokawa financial report, this time, that organization was criticizing the fact that FromSoftware is not self-publishing their games globally and losing profit, SO IN THIS CASE, those people are 100% correct. FromSoftware has expressed for many years that they want to self-publish their games globally, so the sooner they finally start doing it, the better, so that cancerous parasite publishers like Bandai Fagco won't be able to benefit from them anymore. I hate giving money to Bandai Fagco, I want as much as my money to go to FromSoftware.

The base game is 10/10 first playthrough and 8/10 subsequent playthroughs. But that’s not serious criticism. SOTE is an 11/10 first playthrough up until the final boss which impressively drops the quality of the entire dlc to 9/10. Subsequent playthroughs of dlc are 8/10 if you ignore the final boss and 7/10 if you bother with the final boss. Final boss is not that hard either I struggled more against the pig cavalry boss than consort radahn. He just sucks. He’s not fun to fight, he’s bad for the story, he’s gay, the boss arena sucks, there’s really nothing good about it except that it’s out of the way enough and doesn’t have any amazing items locked behind it, so you can ignore it

Every double boss got toned down so you weren't being ragdolled by godskin duo or the crucible knights. They used hit attack animations immediately after the other one and they glued together so you were constantly arrhythmically 2v1d. Radahns hit boxes and speed were teduced.
>>
>>744878726
If you looked into the production of the game you know that the scope of DS2 was much larger than the final product and that for example they wanted to make the transitions between the zones (and missing zones) more seamless like ER.
But after developing a few zones part of the talent was moved to other projects. If FS committed more devs to DS2 like they did with ER it could've been the well polished and cohered game it was meant to be.

from my memories of 1.2:
Duo bosses dogpiled you, now they take turns.
Radahn's meteorites used to oneshot you even at 50VIG and were pretty fast as well.
Frost Stomp had insane damage, frost buildup and basically no recovery time.
Bloody Slash had fucking absurd damage scaling, it dealt so much damage you could chunk bosses effortlessly and it was pretty much a oneshot in PvP regardless of your HP.
SON&F had enormous scaling as well, especially the comet part.
Dragon Spells were completely busted, especially both rot breaths which dealt super high damage and had enormous rot buildup
Moonveil had separate hitboxes for both the sword swing and the blade beam which lead to enormous damage and posture damage on R2s at point black.
Jumping R1s had very high posture damage.
Twin spears had super high damage and status buildup all around.
Bestial Sling was all around much stronger, much higher base damage and posture damage.
You could chain spells almost universally, a common exploit was using a fast spell and chain it with black blade for instant part 2 cast like in webm related, this lead to some hilarious exploits and glitches in general

Oh yeah some another major nerfs in terms of mechanics:
Most ashes of war that were categorized as bullets like the ash version Carian Phalanx had the bullet part inherit whatever buffs you put on the weapon, they would inherit extra element and scaling and even status effects so you could have shit like Carian Phalanx supercharged with Bloodflame Blade so each projectile would add status buildup on hit, see webm related.
Most of the projectile parts of ashes of wars got nerfed in terms of posture buildup.
Flame of the redmanes used to have completely absurd posture damage, like 35 posture damage, you could stunlock anything effortlessly with it, Malenia could barely fucking move at all.
Carian Retaliation used to have insane scaling and would oneshot people in PvP even at 60VIG, now it's basically useless.
Bloodhound step used to cover a lot more distance, now its range is much shorter.

Throwing knifes scaling on infusions got nerfed to the ground especially for FTH/INT scalings.
Bloody Chicken Leg status buildup and posture got nerfed because it was fucking bonkers.
Discus' damage was nerfed and the recovery time for the throw got lengthened

Nightreign has its own meta based around its characters. For the most part it's very similar to Elden Ring pre-nerfs, but every character seeks a different weapon depending on relic loadout and current Nightlord expedition. Excepting the Grafted Blade Greatsword and Marais Executioner Sword, which are both broken overpowered, good for anyone in any situation.
>>
>>744882825
>Nightreign

Did they nerf any bosses?
>>
>>744882347
The placement of graces/bonfires is indeed dogshite, and have been since DS3. And don't forget ER also has those statue checkpoints before every boss just so the almighty player doesn't need to do a boss run. It's such dogshit design to cater to player "needs" like this. Have some fucking faith in your playerbase.
>>

They made bell bearer king dickhead
>>
>>744882193
The release of Nightreign did not come along with any nerfs, buffs, or any changes to Elden Ring.
>>
>>744882896
Grafted Monarch is significantly less impressive than Godric the Grafted because he has no dragon to weld to his arm, his second phase was replaced by him using some crucible incantations which are slow and predictable. Not much else comes to mind; most of the hardest bosses aren't in Nightreign at all, their purpose as endgame challenges are replaced by the Nightlords.

Nightreign goes a little harder with that as its theme is corruption. All the Nightlords are twisted mutants in various ways, and it only gets worse with the Forsaken Hollows; Straghess is a twisted mass of bone and flesh, and Salvation's Standard-Bearers are as gruesome as From Software has ever gotten.
>>
>>744862002
I replayed it last year and there’s a lot of shitty samey dungeons with shit rewards. The first time around it’s fine because maybe you’ll find something cool, the second time you already know where to find useful things so they end up being pointless. There’s a lot of “startup” as well. It’s still fun but you can tell they phoned in a lot of it due to it being open world slop.

Gladius: dogs don't normally have three heads, obviously.
Adel: It has no face!
Gnoster and Faurtis: These are pretty nominal, apart from colossal bugs. Faurtis's chitin appears to be made of rock, though. Animus is a wispy floating disembodied nervous system.
Maris: it's goo. Not that corrupt.
Libra: EYES EVERYWHERE
Fulghor: the Night takes over his missing arm into a twisted mass of darkness.
Caligo: just a normal four winged dragon, but Everdark Caligo loses all her skin to the Night.
Harmonia: they're all horribly twisted if you look at their bodies. Salvation's Standard-Bearers upgrades them into hideous masses of bloody flesh.
Heolstor: three arms and a hollow body.
Straghess: piles of bones and rotting meat in the shape of a giant.

Dark Souls 1 is one of the best games ever made. Bloodborne is one of the best games ever made. Elden Ring is a flawed game that only has the popularity it has due to riding on the coat tails of it's betters that people have convinced themselves that they need to say is the best game ever because everyone else does. Is it a bad game? No it's a good game but it is nowhere close to Fromsoft's best. Not in any aspect be it boss design? DS3, Sekiro and Bloodborne all have it beat. Level design and exlporation? Heck even DS3 has it beat never mind every other aspect. World building? Nothing close to the interesting setting of DS1 or BB. Elden Ring has absolutely nothing it excels at that would make it possible to say it's the best Fromsoft game.

Nothing in DeS, DS1, BB, Sekiro, DS3, etc come close to the level design and exploration in Elden Ring.

West Limgrave, East Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula, Stormveil Castle, Liurnia of the Lakes, Raya Lucaria Academy, Caria Manor, Ainsel River, Siofra River, Atlus Plateau, Caelid, the list goes on. Every area has better level design than the best level designs of the previous entries.

You are projecting hard, you are the one who tries to seek an identity through gaming. That is why you are so attached to Elden DOGSHIT Ring, because it was accessible and dumbed down enough to not filter you. For the True Souls fans, Elden DOGSHIT Ring is boring and meaningless. A good system punishes bad players and rewards good players, boss run backs are a great way to do that.

Elden Ring definitely suffers from being planned out way too big for its own good.
It worked overall, the whole, "shoot for the stars so if you miss you still land on the moon" thing paid off here. Because what is there is satisfying enough.
But the game was definitely cut back and stitched together with teleporters and weird kludges to obscure how many holes there were left once crunch time hit and they had to get the game out.

Ironically, they brought make many DeS mechanics in DS3, and were even considering world tendency

They took Dark Souls 3 (the weakest Souls game), stretched it thin over a massive empty map, and filled the gaps with copy pasted enemies. The only new features are a horse that makes skipping combat trivial and a crafting system that only lets you make low-value items. Every enemy, weapon, boss, spell, location and concept is lifted from an earlier game, but despite that the balance is worse than it's ever been. The story is identical to DaS1 and the quest structure hasn't been adapted to the open world at all, you will brick most quest chains if you aren't using a guide because you didn't know to revisit that pointless empty field where some dickhead hangs out for no reason before you kill a boss 100 miles away that causes him to permanently despawn for no reason.

>upgrade gems that work like Demon's Souls upgrade paths
Huh? DaS3 copies the upgrade system verbatim from DaS2. It's nothing like DeS where you have to get to a certain threshold before you can branch out to other infusions or add a boss soul.

Thought it was the greatest game ever on the first playthrough, second playthrough 2 years later bored me to tears. Way too much filler

I can't get through the DLC
Its difficult, sure, but more than that I just get bored
How much roll timing and other such bullshit can I do?
How much do I want to do?
Not this much, I know that.

Pretty fantastic but I feel Fromsoft would have benefitted from taking a step away from their non stop misery story telling inherent to Dark Souls and give us something with more of an epic upswing at the end. The Roundtable Hold really should have been a bustling hub where everyone you've met shows up to give you quest hints and dialogue and interact with each other. Eventually those character, being aligned with certain regions, then swear fealty to you as it becomes clear you're going to be Elden Lord.

I feel like this was hinted at and then abandoned because many questlines are clearly about helping characters usurp the roles and regions of demigods, but then they just die afterwards and the Roundtable becomes a ghost town. Personally, since I failed to save Rhea the first time around, this pushed me to the Frenzied Flame ending because you might as well make the ending truly final.

I was also immensely disappointed with the DLC in regards to Miquella's finale. The story pivoting to focus on Radahn instead of literally anything to do with Miquella and a lot of the really interesting Alchemy/Gnosticism/Messianic themes was incredibly frustrating. The Hornsent and Crusade stuff was good though.

I don't get this complaint. More so than the base game the DLC generally seems to reward blocking, parries, and actual positioning far more than roll spam. You can get by roll spamming but it's not actually optimal for killing things.

That is what happens when they have made good games since Demon's Souls and established a dedicated fanbase on /v/, then make Elden DOGSHIT Ring and betray their original fans, of course we True Fans will speak against Elden DOGSHIT Ring, you secondaries are funny and retarded.

I'd agree there are way too many sites of grace and that the demands of reaching a new one should be much higher on the players resources than they were. But isn't this area initially blocked by a one way door or a boss?
>>
I think Elden Ring fails becuase of a chasing 2 rabbits and catching neither. It tries to pander to both hyper autist difficulty swear lords and casuals who want an easy mode so the game has probably the worst balance of any soulslike ever made and it massively effects the quality of the game for everything combat related.
>>
>>744902691
How so?
>>
>>744903787
Becuase everything in the game feels like it was designed with you using cheese strats in mind with how much cheap shit they throw at you that your only options are either trivialize the entire game by using said cheese strats and playing a soulslike so easy it reaches Demon's Souls levels or just annoying to deal with since the game expects you to use cheeses. The obvious example being the ashes. It just ended up in a game that feels all style and no substance and was honestly less fun to play than most of the other games. Elden Ring is proof that soulslikes should never have crutches for shitters and should just be designed with a baseline. Honestly I feel like a literal difficulty setting would have been less egregious than what Elden Ring did with it's crutch options since at least with a difficulty setting they wouldn't need to balance the game around it.
>>
>>744904271
But the game doesn't expect you to use cheese. You can beat everything with core tools and strategies. You don't even need to roll.
>>
>>744904583
Not needing to use something and having the experience of not using that something be fun are separate matters entirely. Some autist can no hit the entire game with their fists naked at level 1 but that doesn't really mean anything in the conversation of balance or the average player experience. I'd also clarify that Elden Ring isn't "too hard". It's just too unfun when you don't use cheese strats. I struggled infinitely more with Sekiro than I did with Elden Ring and think that's a much harder game and yet I never once felt an ounce of frustration when playing Sekiro cause whenever I died it felt like it was my fault cause Sekiro is really well balanced and never takes away player agency when fighitng. When I die against shit in Elden RIng it all too often feels like it was because the game was just taking the piss.
>>
>>744904971
I disagree. I generally found proactive application of the basic moveset quite enjoyable.

Can you give an example of something taking away your "agency"? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

>Redmane Castle - teleporter from outside the walls to the inside?
only functions during the festival

>Four Belfries have four teleports taking you to completely arbitrary nonsensical places with dead ends.
scholars were investigating distant lands(same reason why you find so many teleports in liurnia)

>There is no natural way of getting to the Haligtree
deliberate, Ordina was designed to keep people away

>Shortcut to Maliketh in Caelid is a shitty teleport hidden in some bushes.
deliberate, gurranq is in exile

Very obvious example is Malenia. waterfowl dance is unquestionably, no matter how you look at it not a fair move. There's no way you can get caught up in that and think "damn that was on me". No it was the game blatantly cheating. That move was designed like that because the game expects you to be playing with ashes. But then on the flip side if you use anything even slightly strong she folds like tissue paper and is super easy. I think that's the most glaring example of the devs not knowing how to balance combat between cheese strats and normal play. Outside of that the balance in general is just all over the place with the game really lacking in a nice consistent difficulty curve since there's so many different things they need to take into account that no matter how you play the game the game is never going to feel just right in the same way Sekiro does which is balanced for a single playstyle with a single moveset. Past games have somewhat had the issue but the balance in Elden Ring is genuinely worse than any game I've played in years and I could never get a feel of consistency and trying to get a nice balance of difficulty felt basically impossible and made me swap up what shit I was using constantly as everything kept flip flopping between triviality and bullshit like the goldilocks zone was just too tiny for how big Elden Ring is. I shouldn't need to swap my playstyle cause it's too effective or too useless every couple hours.

DS2 was meant to be interconnected (even if not to the same degree) like DS1 but instead of a vertical map they wanted a more horizontal one, that's why for example from Majula you can see places you'll visit later that are very far away. The problem are the distances, sometimes they don't make sense, places look further than they actually are.
Elden Ring takes inspiration from DS2 and fixes these problems (because they had more resources), the distances between places makes more sense and the different maps and the transitions between are more coherent.
I don't remember if they wanted DS2 to be open world in the say way ER is, but curated corridors can still be interconnected and give a sense of scale/distance.

>>744862002
I didn't like it very much, by the time i was in the snowy areas i just wanted it to end, didn't even get the DLC.
That said, i enjoyed the first area
>>
>>744908364
NTA, while I like the expansiveness of Elden Ring I also think that something more similar to corridors would benefit the structure of the game. Not as "linear" as Dark Souls but with the open world areas being more like a series of labyrinths as opposed to the open plains we got. Liurnia of the Lakes for example I think would benefit from the main path dominating the province for a bit before it falls into ruin and you're forced to navigate through a dense tangle swamp, as opposed to the game where it's sort of just open water and stuff. The cliffs of limgrave could have been more extreme and guided the players movements a bit more strictly and bodies of water could have actual deep parts you can't cross or that have secret shores you can safely move over.

>>744908786
I'd say that the game really should have ended either in Leyndell itself or in the depths beneath the city. Because for the whole game the Erdtree is literally the giant beacon your whole adventure revolves around and then the game goes "lol jk" and sends you on a mountain detour that frankly is a pretty weakly designed area

The Haligtree and Mohgwyn palace should have been a DLC.

>>744862002
Good game but it's open world dark souls in the worst possible way.
For the base game, the mini-dungeons are literally pointless (terrible loot/rewards and barely any runes) and the open world itself is barren.
"Legacy dungeons" vary from mediocre (Raya Lucaria, etc.) to incredible (Stormveil on first playthrough, Leyndell, etc.)
DLC map is significantly better and more interesting than base game.
The open world is a negative on replay

Also they never made INT/FTH a viable build in the DLC, they half-baked some spells/incants but no weapons or weapon infusions
>>
>>744862002
Probably the worst story telling in all of From Software games, aside from that it's pretty good
>>
>>744862002
If I were to describe the game, it's like one of those retarded abstract paintings you see on an exhibition.
>>
>>744862002
It was a magical experience rarely felt with a game. But it was exhausting. It's too long and after exploring it once all there is a game with a lot of space between the "legacy dungeons". It took me around 250 hours total, 2 months for the main game and another month for the dlc to complete, and I have zero desire to play it again.
>>
Eh, it's kind of one of those things where after you've beat it it's like... great, I've done the thing. I've went on all the slides in the park, I tried every lollipop in the candy store. Cool. There's nothing else. There's nothing to do again.

Fun for a playthrough, but it's as far as Fronsoft should go with this combat system. It stopped being fun in the DLC. They need to add some complexity before jacking the difficulty up any higher.
