Unlike the OP shit, their goal was to try their hardest to keep to the original meaning and culture, not just intent while still making everything add up correctly. They shifted the English lessons/foreign interactions to French, plugged in they were talking about kanji when talking about letters and when dealing with jokes that dealt with world play they got the closest they could even if it made the scene seem off to the viewer, because they understood the people watching it would want what was as close to the original they could get without knowing the language. Why do localizers act like region specific idioms are lovecraftian grimoires that only the enlightened scribes of yore can partake in? English has a vehicle for untranslatable nonsense, it's called defining things. if wasbuabubwbasuba is untranslatable and I realize it's just the sound of sadness OP makes when cock exits their body, then you don't need to find an equivalent of wasbuabubwbasuba in the english dictionary, you just type it out. Let's just all be honest here, Japanese is a boring, dry, no-fun alllowed language. Americanisms and quips enhance dialogue tenfold
>>744881735謎を解く鍵が手の届くところに
>>744881430Because a clash of worldviews. For example, the Japanese language has no dedicated future tense; expressing a future action requires context. Similarly, Chinese does not use traditional past tenses. A direct translation of a Chinese sentence like 'I bought something' would literally translate to 'I buy done.'This is why direct translation between such vastly different languages is so challenging. A good translation requires understanding these deep conceptual differences while still respecting and conveying the original intent of the text, and as you can guess, almost nobody is interested in doing that when they can just post memes

>>744882015It really is the other way around. Your only experience with "Japanese writing" is an amateur's interpretation of it presented in a rigid, simplified language with little room for artistic expression.English was much more expressive centuries ago, but over the years it's been oversimplified due to poor education and ESLs--and I'm not saying that to be rude, it's simply a matter of fact that English learners overseas would only have the bare minimum vocabulary for the language and wouldn't be able to grasp ye olde English poetry, and those ESLs make up the majority of English speakers now. So loads of expressive, poetic English vernacular has fallen out of use and become lost to time.Japanese by contrast has held on to much of its ye olde (Chinese lmao) language, resulting in a fucking enormous vocabulary. They also understand a modicum of English and use it a lot for names or gags, but this is completely lost in localization because there's no 2nd language localizers could use that would universally apply to all English speakers. And I haven't even started on yakuwarigo, written accents, etc.

The original female protagonist was pretty based>Doesn't like short men>Make fun of crossdresser The translator decided that the girl was "toxic" and "transphobic" and declared his intention to ruin the girl personality on purpose turning her into a psychopath. The anime however actually has a lot of female fans and his supposed female allies all condemned him for his narcissism. They argued that the point is that the girl is flawed as a person because she is a moody teenager. (Which is Demon, Target and Door in japanese). While it dosent affect gameplay here of course it is a small thing that might get lost in translation (and even for kids this game is easy for english speakers. As someone fluent in four languages, I think all localizers should be killed. All of them. The concept of localization is anti-art and anti-human.
I learned to accept that some degree of localization is unavoidable when I stopped seething at translators for adding unnecessary subtitles to movie titles (from english to my language) and started thinking about why they did it. The obvious first reason is trying to make it more attractive to the general public, but there's some stuff that simply doesn't transfer the same idea the original word does.Translating something like Airplane! literally would just leave everyone confused in my country because it has not enough information to sell the movie to us. This dissonance happens a lot with single-word or two-word-long english titles (Groundhog Day comes to mind). The problem begins when localizators try too hard to make things quirky and end up deviating too much from the original. I absolutely despise shit like GBF Relink's translation, which might as well be an officially approved fanfic. I just listen to the JP voices and leave it at that.

>>744878328"I'm gonna punch your lights out" is one of the most standard modern english things you can fucking say to a motherfucker. How in the fuck does that become "I hope you're thirsty, 'cause I brought some punch"?
>>744905794it's a lesser of two evils sort of thing. with "watashi" "boku" or "ore" there's already an accepted english translation (I) that omits detail but generally you can make up for that with the character's tone. with honorifics and terms like senpai/kouhai there's no proper replacement at all. so for pronouns your getting a small loss of information, but with honorifics your getting a total loss of information, and a total loss is more of a problem than a small loss even if a small loss isn't ideal either.

It is funny that localizers are often left-wing types given that localization is an inherently capitalistic process meant to warp an artistic work into something more marketable for another culture.
Localization is a concept that only exists in japanese to english translations. Why does japanese alone need to localized? Why is it ok to do a normal translation from spanish or german or whatever to english?
