WoW is the FF7 of mmos, where a large chunk of its playerbase came from Blizzard blowing millions on marketing to get the most unaware normies into the game.

Warcraft 3 was good though. So the game started out with a built in audience.

I’ve still never experienced anything in an MMO remotely like how the vanilla game felt, but a lot of that was because of the times. Even classic to an extent was great, but these games as a rule need a shit ton in development to even be worth playing let alone become a competitor in the field.
