They also went for heroes/operators instead of allowing for customization, which would fit the setting and lore of player characters a lot more. And lastly, there isn't much content. The final bit of it is fighting the Compiler, but the path there is really long and grindy. You need to get lucky to find all the keys, especially the 6ths one, and then pray that you don't get killed while using it. At least if you do claim it, it's permanent, even between seasons.

But really, IMO, the problem was the content. After so long in development, they only had 4 maps to show for it, and they were kind of small. To complicate matters, one of those maps would only be available a couple days a week. Two seasons in the only new map we've received is a modifier of a previous one. I had had hope for the game when it was new and it looked like there was a narrative that could be developed using the Seasonal wipe structure, injecting new content and story into the game with each season, but the results of this have been pretty limited so-far. At one point during development of Cryo Archive, Bungie talked up the idea that they would be able to commit to as much as 16 or 17 maps within the Marathon ship in orbit,. but at current pace of the release schedule it'll take, what, 30-40 years for those to make it into the game?

The game is trying to be a cross between an extraction shooter and a squad-based tactical PVP shooter, but the design points of both genres are antithetical to each other. An extraction shooter needs to give players the option to rat around and scavenge for relatively good risk/reward, and let the tension of running into a bad encounter create most of the thrill. The way Marathon is set up, the only way to get loot above green tier is to do activities/events/locked rooms at specific points on the map, and basically everything the player does is purposely designed to funnel players into PVP. The maps are small and PoIs are even smaller; all opened boxes and rooms, even the pinwheel conveyance request, broadcast "dinner bells" across the map; many activities like wardens or anomalous matter show map icons or give text notifications the whole lobby; waves of noisemaker bots spawn for most activities; extraction points shoot a beacon into the sky for 40 seconds; and Recon gives rechargeable omnidirectional wall hacks so even hiding isn't an option. The PVP by itself is actually fun if you're against a team of similar skill, but it's by far the most efficient way to get loot and it's also heavily skewed towards coordinated full-stacks. This gets compounded when the sweats and the fullstacks are die rarely and are swimming in loot, so they can afford to bring in purple and gold gear, while the average shitter doesn't want to bring in more than a green gun because he knows he'll probably lose it anyway next to his free-kit teammates. That means the game is mostly stomp or get stomped. There isn't a more reliable viable way to get loot past the first few hours, so you get the cycle of the bottom 5% dropping out every week until you're left with only sweats, which then keeps out potential new players.

There is something kind of respectable taking great pains to make a game that was meant to filter people by design, in its art design, intense deathmatch engagements, and punishing players who don't use take the time to better use their environment to win thier fights. But that level of aggression is absolutely exhausting even if you play at a high level. It was never sustainable for the large audience Bungie needs to keep the lights on. And the campaign against Bungie and Destiny being set out to pasture played an huge role in the general disinterest to go through that punishment long term.

Playing solos solves a lot of these issues, but the problem there is that Bungie refuses to balance around solos, so bot waves usually take too long to kill before attracting other players, and the most rewarding activities (pinwheel, cryo) are out of reach to begin with. Ironically, there's too much Halo/Destiny DNA in Marathon for it to succeed. Despite being punishing if you lose, Marathon seems to be designed for casual Apex-style squad PVP full of ability and equipment gimmicks. Locking abilities (cores) and the best equipment (bubbles/grenades) behind loot only makes the experience for noobs and shitters less fun and more one-sided. I'd blame Peter Ziegler or whoever pushed for Marathon to focus on hero shooter PVP, because clearly he didn't realize that constantly pushing players into PVP would inevitably turn lobbies into winner-takes-all shitshows where one team wipes the rest and doesn't even loot anything because they already have purple and gold gear.

Maybe this makes me a retarded scrub in the eyes of le ebin pro gamers and maybe what I am complaining about is just the standard for this genre - of which Marathon was the first game I tried - but my biggest problem with the game is that the TTK is just way too low. Going into the game I thought that it was going to be some tense survival experience in which you'd traverse the map exchanging fire with enemies and desperately scavenging for supplies after a close call leaves you injured. I figured it would be a slow and methodical cat-and-mouse deal, and I think it wants to be to an extent but at the same time you just die so quickly that any enemy encounter at all is a guaranteed death and getting a good weapon barely feels impactful when even the starting weapons can turn you into paste in under a second. To an extent I guess it does make the game "scary" in the sense that running into a guy is like a jumpscare but I wouldn't say it makes the game fun or engaging, it just makes it kind of annoying and it makes running into another player at all feel a coinflip on who clips the other guy first.Again I might be retarded or a noob or just wrong and at least one of those things is definitely true but I would personally have put much more time into Marathon if I felt like I got more meaningful long form player engagements but I never really felt like I was improving at the game because for all my combat abilities and fancy guns, if the other guy shoots first you just die unless you can pop a smoke bomb or something. There's no time for a "story" to develop within a match, no time for frequent skirmishes with a guy who becomes your temporary nemesis, no time to signal that you're chill and make an alliance, etc. Even something like Fortnite feels better equipped for the fantasy this game seems to want to present because at least you don't explode into gibs immediately.
