For whatever reason, people on the far-right and the far-left require depictions of ethnic features amongst nonwhites to be at least average (as in, 5/10) looking in order to be "authentic".My theory is that the right has a racial hierarchy in mind and they feel uncomfortable when depictions don't align with their preferred view on whatever group we're talking about. Add the fact that the far-right derives pleasure from negative depictions and it gets even worse. The left views beauty standards as products of the white supremacist patriarchy and besides which, more variety in features equals more diversity and body positivity.This leads to problems down the road though, when you want to make a character that is conventionally good-looking for the most part, but with subtle ethnic features. It's also a problem when you introduce characters into specific styles (especially anime and anime-adjacent styles) because they might not be a suitable place for even representing ethnic characteristics in the first place.Let's say you're making a character that is intended to be good looking but also a black woman in an anime style. The artist will pick a reference, and recognize that the reference still has ethnic traits like fuller lips and a broader nose compared to the other characters, so they'll keep that in mind and proceed like they would any other character. The reaction from politically polarized people will complain the character isn't a 5/10 while bringing up *averages* in appearance despite not being relevant when your design spec is already set in stone. Really odd.
